Ministry of Interior excuses to deploy troops in LG polls in Sindh

Ministry of Interior
  • The ECP has received the reply from the Ministry of Interior.
  • GHQ excused to provide army and rangers for LG elections.
  • The deployment is not possible at highly sensitive polling stations.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has excused to deploy troops outside sensitive and most sensitive polling stations during the second phase of local government elections in Karachi and Hyderabad.

The Election Commission has received the reply to the letter written to the Ministry of Interior on the issue of the deployment of the army and rangers outside the polling stations during the second phase of municipal elections in Sindh.

Responding to the ECP’s letter, the Ministry of Interior has excused the deployment of the army and rangers at polling stations.

In response to the letter, the Ministry of Interior has stated that deployment of such a large number of army and rangers personnel is not possible.

The Ministry of Interior said that the issue of deployment of army and rangers was taken with the GHQ, however, deployment is the responsibility of the provincial government at the first level and it has already been informed that deployment is not possible at highly sensitive polling stations.

According to the Ministry of Interior, it is not possible to provide security cover to the election staff and materials, but the ECP should identify 500 highly sensitive polling stations because the deployment of rangers can be done outside five hundred highly sensitive polling stations, in which the rangers personnel will assist the police personnel.

It may be noted that the Election Commission had written a letter to the Ministry of Interior regarding the deployment of the Pakistan army and rangers personnel during the LG elections.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Interior has directed the deployment of Frontier Constabulary at sensitive and highly sensitive polling stations.

In this regard, the Ministry of Interior said that the Election Commission had requested for deployment of Frontier Constabulary at the most sensitive and sensitive polling stations. However, the date and area of deployment, in consultation with the Sindh Government, Election Commission, and Frontier Constabulary.
