Speaker, deputy speaker for NA to be elected tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The outgoing Speaker National Assembly, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, announced the schedule for the elections of the speaker and deputy speaker’s slots.

The elections for the posts of speaker and deputy speaker are scheduled to take place on Friday (March 1, 2024).

According to Article 53 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the National Assembly is mandated to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker at its first meeting following a general election, with the process taking precedence over any other business.

The voting process will be conducted through a secret ballot, with the candidate receiving the majority of votes being elected as the new speaker of the House.

Subsequently, the new speaker will announce the schedule for the deputy speaker’s election, which will follow the same procedure as the secret ballot. Strict security measures were implemented to ensure the safety of the session, with heavy contingents of police and Rangers deployed outside the Parliament House, and entry for unauthorized individuals onto the premises was prohibited.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), President, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has nominated Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly on behalf of PML-N, and Bilawal Bhutto has nominated Ghulam Mustafa Shah as the candidate for Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly on behalf of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

MULTAN: Farmer prime minister and Senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party(PPP) Yusuf Raza Gilani has said impression of favorite party should be ended now and free and fair elections should be held across the country.

Talking to the media in Lodhran, Yusuf Raza Gilani said that Bilawal Bhutto is giving his statements according to the current political situation of the country. He claimed that former president Asif Zardari and Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto are both on the same page. He said after the Quetta rally, the impression of the difference between Asif Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto has ended now.

In response to a question, while talking to the media, he said “I do not think that the People’s Party will make seat adjustments with anyone, the party thinks that it will contest the election with its manifesto”.

Yusuf Raza Gilani said that taking the PPP to the back foot does not matter and hoped that the party would play on the front foot in elections.

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi ruled out any “crisis on meeting the financial needs of the ECP” in order to hold free, fair and transparent general elections in the country.

“The Cabinet had approved Rs 42 billion for the budgetary needs of the ECP. An amount of Rs 10 billion was already released,” the minister wrote on X formerly Twitter.

He said the Election Commission of Pakistan had approached to release Rs 17.4 billion, out of the budgeted amount.

“Whatever budgeted amount is needed by the ECP, will be released as per its needs accordingly,” Solangi added. He said the caretaker government firmly stood behind the ECP in holding free and fair elections as mandated by Article 218(3) of the Constitution.

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi said the caretaker government was committed to conduct free, fair and transparent elections and it would  provide all possible facilities to the Election Commission of Pakistan for conducting elections.

He said this during a meeting with the delegation of Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), which wad led by its President Major General (retd) Raza Muhammad.

The current political and economic situation of the country, elimination of fake news and disinformation, upcoming general elections, social media issues, and elections in other countries of South Asia were discussed in the meeting.

The delegation informed the minister  about the IPRI’s latest research on the political scenario of the country, and appreciated the caretaker government’s commitment for conducting free, fair and transparent elections.

“Equal opportunities are being provided to all political parties, there will be no discrimination against anyone,” Murtaza Solangi said.

He said for improvement of the political environment in the country, development of consensus among all political parties was indispensable.

The minister said the world was facing the problems of misinformation, disinformation and fake news, while the latter was the biggest challenge on social media.

All stakeholders would have to play their role in ending fake news, he maintained.

The role of media in the upcoming general elections was also discussed in the meeting.

Solangi said the media would be provided a conducive environment during the elections. Equal coverage was being given to all political parties on state media, he added.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP)has decided to introduce a digital information app for general elections.

According to the details, the Election Commission is preparing for the general elections and ECP has formulated a strategy to issue cards to international observers, while it has been decided to introduce a digital information app for the timely delivery of information.

According to sources, the printing of special features accreditation cards for international observers is in the final stages.

The international observers will be able to apply for and get visas through the online service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should provide the complete list of international observers to the Election Commission.

The sources of the Election Commission said that the security clearance of the international observers will be done by the Ministry of Interior and the letters have been sent to most of the forums including the European Union, and Commonwealth.

PPP demands for holding elections within 90 days

KARACHI:  Pakistan People’s Party has demanded holding of the general elections in the country within 90 days as required by the constitution, urging that pushing the country towards a constitutional and political crisis should be avoided through unjustified delay in the election.

Vice President PPP Sherry Rehman has said that her party will make its future strategy, in the light of the situation arising from the meeting of the party delegation with the top officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), in its next meeting of the Central Executive Committee due in Lahore.

Vice President PPP Sherry Rehman, Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Shazia Mari and Faisal Karim Kundi held a presser at Bilawal House to inform about the deliberations taken during the CEC meeting in Bilawal House.

Sherry Rehman told that the meeting of the CEC under the joint chair of Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari. She said that the focus of the meeting was on the country’s ongoing economic crisis, increasing poverty, increase in petrol and electricity tariff, and unchecked inflation as well as the solution to these problems. She said that the meeting also formulated a strategy for relief activities in view of the flood situation in Punjab.

Former federal minister said that the CEC meeting also reviewed the situation regarding the general elections in the country and the party has a clear stand in this regard that the constitution is clear regarding holding elections in 90 days, hence, there should be no ambiguity about it. “A delegation of the party will go to the Election Commission on August 29 and place the party’s position before the Election Commission.”

Ms Rehman said that the PPP has serious reservations about the digital census, adding that elections cannot be delayed on the basis of delimitation of constituencies as numbers of seats remain unchanged in provinces according to the census.

Meanwhile, Syed Nayyar Bukhari said that the constitution mentions holding general elections for 90 days, but delimitation of the constituencies are not mentioned.

ECP to consult with major political parties for upcoming polls

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) has decided to consult with the major political parties of the country.

The Election Commission will hold separate consultations with the political parties in which the parties will be taken into confidence regarding the elections.

After announcing that the general elections will be held in the new constituencies as per the approved census. The Election Commission will officially start the new constituencies while the final delimitation process will be completed by December 14.

Under the first phase, constituency committees will be formed from today and will be established in all provinces including the federal capital. These committees will get necessary data including district maps, and population from the provincial governments.

In the second phase, the committees will collect the census report and other information at the district level by August 31.

In the third phase, the 4-day training of the constituency committees will begin from September 1 and the committees will be informed by determining the population quota for the seats of the national and provincial assemblies.

The preliminary constituencies will be completed from September 8 to October 7, after which the details of the preliminary constituencies will be published on October 9.

Objections or suggestions can be filed from October 10 to November 8 and the Election Commission will hear these objections from October 10 to December 9.

According to the Election Commission, the constituencies will be finalized on December 14.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed federal and provincial caretakers governments to ensure free and fair elections in the country.

The Election Commission has once again sent a warning letter to the caretaker federal and provincial governments, asking them to desist from taking steps to jeopardize the elections.

In the letter written by the Election Commission, it was clarified that the caretaker governments should not be involved in such work which may threaten the conduct of elections and governments should not obstruct the conduct of transparent elections.

According to the text of the letter, caretaker governments should not influence the conduct of transparent elections in any way. The caretaker governments should be limited to the powers given under the Election Act, 2017.

Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) warned the caretaker government of Punjab against taking decisions related to major initiatives.
