SHC approves protective bail of Arif Alvi in 3 cases

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has approved the protective bail of former President Arif Alvi in ​​3 cases.

In the petition filed in the Sindh High Court, the former president stated that despite the peaceful protest, cases have been registered under the Terrorism Act and other serious provisions.

According to the information so far, cases have been registered against him in Mianwali, Taxila and Rawalpindi.

The petition also requested that the Sindh Police be restrained from arresting Arif Alvi and including his name in unknown FIRs.

Later, the court granted Arif Alvi’s protective bail for 20 days on a bond of 50,000.

The court said that the matter is being sent to the constitutional bench for further hearing of the case and this bench will look into other matters including the details of the cases.

In another case,  contempt of court petition was filed against the Director General Sindh Building Control Authority for not de-sealing the dental clinic of former President Arif Alvi despite the orders of the Sindh High Court.

Dr. Arif Alvi’s wife filed a contempt of court petition against the DG SBCA and others for not de-selling the clinic despite the orders of the Sindh High Court.

SHC orders SBCA to de-seal Arif Alvi’s dental clinic

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued a written decision declaring the Sindh Building Control Authority’s decision to seal former President Arif Alvi’s clinic null and void.

The Sindh High Court in its judgment said that the SBCA did not give notice to the petitioner before sealing the clinic and did not give the petitioner an opportunity to clean up, which is a violation of fundamental rights.

The judgment of the court ordered that the SBCA immediately de-seal the dental clinic of Arif Alvi, the petitioner should approach the SBCA within 10 days for changing the status of the plot and the SBCA on the request decide in 45 days.

It should be noted that the Sindh Building Control Authority had sealed Arif Alvi’s dental clinic in October and the Sindh High Court had ordered the de-sealing of Arif Alvi’s clinic couple of days ago, the written decision of which has been issued today.

Earlier, Sindh High Court had reserved its decision on the petition to de-seal the dental clinic of former President Dr. Arif Alvi.

PTI founder approves Omar Ayub resignation

ISLAMABAD; Opposition leader National Assembly Omar Ayub’s resignation as Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf(PTI)  which was accepted by PTI founder Imran Khan.

Opposition leader of PTI Omar Ayub says that “I am grateful to the founder of PTI, he accepted my resignation, I had resigned on June 22 but it was not accepted”.

Omar Ayub said that as an opposition leader, taking cases, watching rallies was a workload. “I asked the opposition leader senate to convey my resignation in a meeting with the founder chairman”.

He further said that “I will continue to work with PTI as a worker and the founding chairman”.

On the other hand, the founding PTI lacks confidence in the central leadership of the party. Salman Akram Raja is likely to be made Secretary General in place of Omar Ayub.

According to party sources, the name was changed due to lack of consensus in the party under the leadership of Omar Ayub Khan. Shibli Faraz and Arif Alvi named Salman Akram Raja instead of Omar Ayub.

Omar Ayub will continue to play his role in the assembly as the opposition leader.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has made significant changes to the party structure.

The former prime minister has separated parliamentary affairs from party’s political matters.

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) and Awam Pakistan Party (APP) termed the federal government’s decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf(PTI) as childish and unwise.

ANP Central Spokesperson said the federal government’s decision to ban PTI is childish and unwise.

The spokesman said that the way of political parties cannot be blocked by restrictions and obstacles, political differences with PTI have their place but this move of the government will be foolish.

According to the Central Spokesman, those who are actually responsible for political instability and economic difficulties, one political party is being consciously used against another political party.

ANP said that restrictions on political parties and political process are not acceptable in any case.

It should be noted that the federal government has decided to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and has announced that Article 6 case should be conducted against former president Arif Alvi, founder of PTI and former deputy speaker Qasim Suri

After the approval of the Cabinet, this reference will be sent to the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that the government has no mandate to impose ban on a political party, ARY News reported on Monday.

Convener Awam Pakistan Party (APP), talking to media said that if the Article six invoked against anyone than those in government today could also face it.

President urges community action to combat thalassemia

LAHORE: President Dr. Arif Alvi emphasised the necessity of community efforts in preventing thalassemia among children, advocating for mandatory testing before marriage.

He was addressing a prize distribution ceremony of Sundas Foundation, as a chief guest, held here at Governor’s House.

In his address, President Alvi quoted the example of England regarding success in thalassemia control due to proper awareness, while Pakistan had to face shortage of blood donations for thalassemia children, adding that even with extensive campaigns, this shortage could not be overcome.

Alvi further said that Pakistan has 26.2 million children out of schools, while our neighbouring countries India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have accomplished almost 100 per cent enrollment rate.

He said that Pakistan built 50,000 schools in Punjab since its inception, while the state needed equal number of more schools to educate such a large number of children. He said that Pakistan has more than 2.5 lakh mosques, and proposed that those could be used as educational centres to address the issue.

He said: “Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) gave status of community centres to mosques and Islam gave us golden principles for society; we all should get inspiration from Quran and Sunnah”.

China made progress and achieved prosperity by focusing on education and health of its population. He said Pakistan has the fifth biggest population in the world, which has immense potential for growth. The president stressed the best utilisation of this workforce.

Thanking the people working for thalassemia elimination and serving humanity, he said that they are our heroes and they would stand honoured before Almighty Allah; they should be given respect, and recognition of their services.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi while condemning the terrorist attacks in Kerman city in Iran, expressed deep grief over the loss of lives.

The president, in his message on the International Anti-Corruption Day being observed on Saturday, said the whole nation must stand united and support efforts against corruption to purge the society of the social evil.

“I am hopeful that if we act together, we can make an economically strong and corruption-free Pakistan for our future generations,” he added. He said,” Pakistan commemorates the Day with the theme ‘Uniting the World Against Corruption’ to highlight the need for collective action to curb corrupt practices in the country. ‘The Day underscores the need to make united efforts by governments, civil society, media, and youth and play their role in eradicating the menace of corruption,” he added. Corruption, he said, “poses a serious threat to our country’s socio-economic development and good governance hindering efficient service delivery, discouraging investment, and obstructing economic progress.”

“It is, therefore, imperative to accelerate efforts to eliminate corruption from the society. Although Pakistan has taken several steps to improve transparency, ensure accountability, and curb corruption, much remains to be done in this regard.”

The president said the government alone could not overcome the challenge, rather it was the shared responsibility of all segments of society to support its efforts to uproot the scourge of corruption. “For this, we need to identify its root causes, detect corrupt practices, expose corrupt elements, create awareness, and deal with corrupt elements with iron hands,” he added.

President Alvi stressed the need to improve the country’s legal framework to expedite prosecution and bridge loopholes to eliminate corrupt practices, besides increasing parliamentary oversight at the federal and provincial levels to bring greater transparency in governance. “We also need to strengthen the capacity of our anti-corruption bodies and criminal justice institutions to investigate and effectively deal with corrupt elements,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has emphasized the need for formulation of a national mental health policy to address the mental health issues in Pakistan.

He said that 24% population of the country was facing various mental health issues and it required an institutional framework and public-private partnership to provide mental health services to the people.

The President expressed these views while chairing a follow-up meeting on mental health in Pakistan, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

A detailed presentation by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination on the National Mental Health App “Humraaz” highlighted that more than 240,000 calls had been received since its launch in April 2023. The President appreciated the launching of “Humraaz” that was providing mental health assistance and counselling services to the people in need.

The President called for improving the effectiveness of the Humraaz app, besides strengthening the mental health support system in the country. He highlighted that mental health was a major concern for Pakistan which required coordinated efforts by both the public and private sectors to utilize their expertise.

He further emphasized the need for an integrated approach on all mental health-related programs and initiatives to effectively address the mental health challenge being faced by the country. He urged the need for the capacity building of human resources, besides providing online trainings to overcome the shortage of mental health professionals.

The meeting underscored the need for raising awareness about mental health issues to educate the people about the importance of seeking mental health counselling. The role of the family in providing psychological support and helping manage health issues was also highlighted.

During the meeting, the need for collective measures and an integrated approach involving various stakeholders, including relevant ministries, Pakistani psychiatric associations based in the USA and the UK, and civil society was also stressed.

The Federal Minister for Health Services, Regulations and Coordination appreciated the role played by President Dr Arif Alvi and the First Lady in raising awareness about various health issues in Pakistan. He expressed the hope that the precedent set by the Presidency would be sustained and followed.

President Alvi phoned the family of Lt Col Muhammad Hassan Haider, who was martyred in an attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on November 6.

He interacted with the families of Naik Khushdil Khan, Lance Naik Abdul Qadeer Khan and Rafeeq Khan.

He also telephoned the family members of Naib Subedar Asif Imran and Sepoy Irfan Ali, who embraced martyrdom in Awaran district of Balochistan on October 29.

He also spoke to the family members of Sepoy Farman Ali, who sacrificed his live in an attack on October 18 in South Waziristan.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) has started the printing of nomination papers in connection with the preparations for the general elections.

Sources connected with the Election Commission said that the ECP is printing the nomination papers from the Printing Corporation and the papers will be delivered to the District Returning Officers(DROs) before the election schedule.

According to the sources, nomination papers will be given more on the demand of the returning officers, the commission will give nomination papers of the candidates in proportion to the total voters of the district while there will be white colored nomination papers for general, reserved seats for women and minorities.

It should be remembered that the ECP has fixed the date of February 8, 2024 to hold general elections in the country after meeting with President Arif Alvi on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission has started formal preparations in this regard. It has prepared lists of polling staff including polling stations.

A few days ago, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja met Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar and issued a statement.

According to the announcement, the Chief Election Commissioner informed the Caretaker Prime Minister about the preparations for the elections. He said that the lists of polling stations and staff have been prepared and the work of printing the election materials and the work of updating the election lists is also in the final stages.

The Chief Election Commissioner invited the Caretaker Prime Minister to visit the Election Commission to review the preparations for the general elections.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi said Pakistan offered the world a valuable window to Gandhara civilization with its unique blend of ancient history, and the Buddha’s message of peace and compassion.

“In today’s world where hatred is on the rise and increasing polarization is fueling conflicts, it’s time to rediscover the role of cultural diplomacy to promote dialogue among civilizations,” he said in his address here at the three-day Gandhara Symposium 2023.

The symposium titled ‘Cultural Diplomacy: Reviving Gandhara Civilization and Buddhist Heritage in Pakistan’ was organized by Prime Minister’s Task Force on Gandhara Tourism, Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), and the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The event gathered monks and inter-faith experts from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam with an objective to explore Pakistan’s rich Buddhist legacy and create an enabling environment for Gandhara tourism.

President Alvi said Buddha’s quest rekindles the spirit of inner reflection with a precept to abstain from taking lives of the living beings and caring for the environment.

He highlighted that the Gandhara civilization, which thrived in Pakistan centuries ago, could serve as an informative place for the visitors from across the globe to explore exquisite Buddhist sites.

He urged collaborative efforts to raise awareness about the inclusive and multicultural nature of Gandhara civilization and help the society to absorb diversity of cultures.

The president welcomed the Buddhist monks in the country, hoping that their presence would relay a message of peace and cross-cultural harmony.

Minister of State, Chairman of the PM Task Force on Gandhara Tourism Ramesh Kumar Vankwani said the Gandhara civilization continues to mesmerize from all over the world and emphasized the need to preserve and revive the historic Buddhist relics.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has urged the need to accelerate efforts for the job placement of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the public and private sectors to empower them financially.

He said that the suitability of PWDs for different jobs in the market should be determined as per international standards, and they should be facilitated in finding jobs for their financial empowerment.

The President expressed these views while chairing a meeting regarding the framework for the classification and severity of disability, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that prospective employers for the job placement of skilled Differently-Abled People (DAPs) should be identified and, in the first phase, large employers in the private sector should be approached to accommodate DAPs as per their skill set. He said that the representation of PWDs in the business and industrial sectors should be increased to make them productive citizens of the country.

The President emphasized the need for adopting the framework for the classification of disabilities, developed in line with international standards and best practices, at the national and provincial levels. He added that the framework would help determine the severity of disability as well as the suitability of PWDs for jobs in the market.

He also called for making the disability certificates accessible and readable to the general public by translating them into Urdu.

He urged the concerned stakeholders to improve their coordination with the provinces for the adoption of a uniform classification framework and disability certificate throughout the country that would greatly facilitate PWDs.

The President underscored the need for highlighting the success stories of DAPs in the media so as to encourage and motivate PWDs to make similar achievements.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) has decided to file a petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for postponing elections in Punjab.

Addressing a press conference, senior PTI leaders Fawad Chaudhry and Asad Umar said Barrister Ali Zafar will file a plea in the Supreme Court (SC) tomorrow. They said President Dr. Arif Alvi had already announced the elections scheduled in Punjab on April 30 and added that ECP could not postpone polls.

They said a contempt of court petition will also be filed against Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for not announcing the elections schedule in the province. They said 96 bars of Pakistan strongly condemned the postponement of elections in Punjab.

Fawad Chaudhry said the crackdown against PTI workers and supporters has continued across the country while 753 PTI workers have been arrested so far.  He said the arrest of PTI workers and supporters was contempt of high court orders.

He said the judiciary is under extreme pressure in Pakistan after criticisms from PML-N leadership. He hoped that supermen court judges will provide justice and millions of people attached expectations to the apex court.

He welcomed the formation of a commission to probe alleged murder attack allegations on behalf of Imran Khan by the Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and said PTI will present reservations to the commission.

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry said PTI will hold a power show on March 25 at Minar e Pakistan Lahore which will prove referendum.
