IRS

ISLAMABAD: Institute of Regional Studies in collaboration with Asian Institute of Eco-Civilization Research and Development (AIERD) organized a seminar for President Ebrahim Raisi’s vision of regional cooperation.

In his welcome address, President IRS Ambassador Jauhar Saleem hailed the ‘Neighbourhood Policy’ of President Ebrahim Raisi (late). He recalled that Ambassador Jauhar pointed out that IRS was the first institution that had arranged a seminar on this policy and highlighted Raisi’s successful diplomacy for revival of ties with UAE and Egypt and rapprochement with Saudi Arabia in 2023.

He also underscored that Iran’s relations towards its east, especially with Pakistan have been always cordial and cooperative, which were further strengthened in the wake of late President Raisi’s visit to Pakistan.

Ambassador Reza Amiri thanked IRS for organizing the seminar and noted that regional cooperation was the key agenda during the tenure of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Dr. Amir Abdollahian. That was very much reflected by 28 foreign visits that President Raisi undertook.

Ambassador Amiri stressed that President Raisi’s visit to Pakistan was his most extensive visit in which he visited three cities and met with top leadership of the country including the President, Prime Minister, Speaker National Assembly, Chairman Senate and Army Chief.

The MoUs signed during the visit in the areas of free trade agreement, economic cooperation and promoting tourism were the attestation to the strong brotherly ties which both Pakistan and Iran share, Ambassador Amiri expressed.

He also praised President Raisi’s ambition of prioritizing regional cooperation through SCO, Caspian Sea Summit and BRICS. Ambassador Amiri assured that the new government in Iran would uphold the legacy of President Raisi and continue to promote cooperation vis-à-vis regional states and Pakistan.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Iran, Mohammad Mudassir Tipu highlighted President Raisi’s dedicated efforts to bolster the enduring cultural and economic bonds with Pakistan.

Iran’s President Raisi invited to visit Saudi Arabia, Tehran says

Saudi Arabia
  • The invitation is claimed to have arrived in the form of a letter from King Salman.
  • Mr. Raisi had welcomed it and “stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation”.
  • Hossein Amir-Abdollahian informed reporters that the two countries had agreed to conduct a meeting.

Iran claims Saudi Arabia has invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi for an official visit, barely over a week after the two countries agreed to re-establish diplomatic ties.

The invitation is claimed to have arrived in the form of a letter from King Salman, although it has yet to be confirmed by the Saudis.

The recent history of the Middle East has been dominated by antagonism between the two states.

China mediated the thaw, which has the potential to change the region’s geopolitics.

A senior Iranian official, Mohammad Jamshidi, tweeted about the offer to visit the Saudi capital, Riyadh, adding Mr. Raisi had welcomed it and “stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation”.

Steps towards stability

Separately, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian informed reporters that the two countries had agreed to conduct a meeting at the level of foreign ministers, with three possible locations mentioned.

He did not specify the places or the date of the encounter.

Sebastian Usher, the recent improvement in bilateral relations, which occurred abruptly after days of discussions mediated by China, appears to be gaining serious traction.

Both have stated that their embassies would reopen within two months and that commercial and security relation will be restored.

Several others, including the United States and the United Nations, greeted this trend with caution after earlier attempts at reconciliation had failed.

Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in January 2016 after protesters stormed its embassy in Tehran.

That came after Riyadh murdered prominent Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who had been convicted of terrorism-related crimes.

Since then, tensions have been high between the Sunni- and Shia-led neighbors, with each seeing the other as a menacing entity seeking regional control.

They have been on opposing sides in various regional crises, notably Syria and Yemen’s civil wars.

Mr. Amir-Abdollahian also expressed confidence that steps would be taken to repair relations with Bahrain, a strong Saudi ally that, like Riyadh, severed diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2016.

“We hope that some obstacles will be removed between Iran and Bahrain, and we will take basic steps to reopen the embassies,” he said.

Bahrain has not replied to the remarks but has previously supported the Iran-Saudi deal to restore diplomatic relations.

Iran has also stated a willingness to reestablish or enhance relations with other regional Arab adversaries, such as Jordan and the UAE.

China and Iran call for the lifting of Iran sanctions; Xi to visit

China
  • The leaders urged the execution of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.
  • Xi accepted Raisi’s invitation to visit Iran.
  • President Joe Biden stated in 2021 that the US would return to the accord if Iran returned to compliance.

China‘s President Xi Jinping and his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, both called for the removal of sanctions against Iran as part of a delayed international accord on its nuclear program on Thursday.

Xi also accepted Raisi‘s invitation to visit Iran, which he will do at his leisure, the two leaders said in a joint statement on the last day of Raisi’s three-day state visit to China.

The leaders urged the execution of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, under which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief from numerous nations, including the United States.

However, in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the agreement and ordered the reimposition of US sanctions on Iran.

President Joe Biden stated in 2021 that the US would return to the accord if Iran returned to compliance, but negotiations have stagnated.

“All relevant sanctions should be fully lifted in a verifiable manner to promote the full and effective implementation,” Xi and Raisi said.

China and Iran emphasized that easing sanctions and providing economic advantages to Iran were critical components of the accord.

On Tuesday, Xi informed Raisi that China would “participate constructively” in talks to resume implementation of the agreement, while also expressing his support for Iran’s rights and interests.

“China firmly opposes interference by external forces in Iran’s internal affairs and undermining Iran’s security and stability,” the leaders said in the statement.

The two leaders also devised a number of projects, including those to promote e-commerce and agriculture.

TEHRAN – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will travel to China in the coming days for a three-day visit aimed at expanding economic relations, according to official media.

According to Iran’s national news agency, Raisi will depart for Beijing on Monday evening in response to an official invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
