Oman experiences 4.1-magnitude earthquake at Duqm

earthquake
  • The 4.1-magnitude tremor struck Duqm.
  • There were no reports of injuries or damage to property.
  • The alert level in Muscat and the rest of the Sultanate is now zero.

Muscat: Several citizens in Oman reported experiencing minor earthquake tremors on Sunday. However, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or damage to property.

The 4.1-magnitude tremor struck Duqm at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).

While the alert level in Muscat and the rest of the Sultanate is now zero, the EMC warned that the direct impact of the earthquake will vary based on the kind, height, and nature of the buildings in the area.

Earthquakes are not unusual in Oman, according to experts, because the country is located in a seismically active zone. Oman’s government and other organizations have put in place mechanisms to monitor seismic activity and keep inhabitants informed of any potential dangers.

Dr. Issa Al Hussein, Director of the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC), told Oman’s General Radio last week that the EMC has 21 stations equipped with cutting-edge equipment to monitor earthquakes and estimate their position, strength, and magnitude.

Because the Sultanate of Oman is part of the Arabian Plate in a convergence zone between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, seismic activity appears to be dynamic every now and then.

“We are in the process of setting up a monitoring station for the strong network that will be disseminated across cities and urban areas in the coming months. It is in the process of preparation and processing”, he stated.

Bahrain’s crown prince calls Qatari emir in apparent step towards mending fences

Bahrain’s crown prince
  • Two Gulf states may be moving toward repairing relations two years after an Arab boycott of Qatar was lifted.
  • The discussion came after Qatar’s emir and Bahrain’s king attended a small Arab summit.
  • The rulers of Oman, Jordan, and Egypt were also present at the summit.

DUBAI: Bahrain’s crown prince spoke by phone with Qatar’s emir late Wednesday, according to the state news agency, indicating that the two Gulf states may be moving toward repairing relations two years after an Arab boycott of Qatar was lifted.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt lifted a three-and-a-half-year embargo on Qatar in January 2021, but there have been no bilateral talks between Doha and Manama to resolve differences since then.

According to sources, Bahrain‘s crown prince and prime minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, “emphasized the importance of joint efforts to resolve all outstanding differences” during a phone call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“It was also agreed that officials from both countries would continue to communicate in order to achieve common goals,” according to the sources.

The discussion came after Qatar’s emir and Bahrain’s king attended a small Arab summit in Abu Dhabi last week, along with the rulers of Oman, Jordan, and Egypt.

The dispute that led to the quartet severing all ties with Qatar in 2017 was over its support for Islamist movements deemed a threat by Arab neighbors, as well as its ties with Iran and Turkey.

The four countries also had disagreements with Qatar.

Except for Bahrain, all countries restored travel and trade links in 2021.

People without tickets must not head to Basra stadium: Minister

The director of media and public relations at the Ministry of Interior has said in a statement that fans should not go to Basra’s stadium unless they have tickets for the match.
“The numbers of fans are very large, and we do not want there to be cases of suffocation, and the pressure will be doubled on the security forces,” the Iraqi News Agency quoted Major General Saad Maan as saying.

Maan called on the fans to “commit to the regulations and instructions issued by the security forces” and said it was possible to watch the match in public spaces.

“Joy cannot be complete, and there can be no winning except with the safety of citizens,” he added.

Palm Trunk Stadium’s gates have been closed

All gates to Basra’s Palm Trunk Stadium have been closed due to overcrowding.

According to Iraqi media, interior ministry officials are meeting to discuss the next steps. Deferring the game is an option, but it will only be used as a last resort.
