New Zealand believes it is time for its teens to say “thank you, next” to their ex-boyfriends and is paying millions to make it happen.

The Ministry of Social Development will give the Love Better campaign $4 million (NZ$ 6.4 million) over three years to assist youth recover from breakups and limit harm in their relationships, according to reports.

The campaign is being pushed by New Zealand’s young and one of the government’s top priorities, according to the government.

“Over 1,200 young kiwis told us they need support to deal with early experiences of love and hurt, and breakups were identified as a common challenge,” Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment Priyanca Radhakrishnan said in a statement.

“Breakups suck,” a promotional video for the campaign declares. The video features clips of teens talking about needing to block their exes and move on from their past relationships, with one saying: “This is getting ridiculous. This is getting so out of hand. Youthline, an organisation committed to assisting individuals aged 12 to 24, is running a dedicated phone, text, or email helpline for young people going through a breakup as part of the campaign, which employs the phrase “own the feelings.” Youthline will get a share of the $4 million to assist expand its existing hotline service.

“This is an authentic way to inspire others to build their own strength, self-worth, and resilience,” Radhakrishnan said in the statement, noting the Love Better campaign’s approach leveraging social media and creating a community to address the impact of breakups has not been tried before.

“We know there can be very negative impacts from breakups done badly – both at a personal and community level,” Youthline’s chief executive Shae Ronald said, adding that relationship issues were one of the top reasons young people generally contacted the helpline, reports.

A poll of 1,200 young New Zealanders conducted by the Ministry of Social Development indicated that 68% had experienced something awful “beyond the ‘normal’ hurt of breaking up.”

The campaign’s purpose, according to Radhakrishnan, is to help young people through “these formative experiences” in the hopes of favourably influencing how they approach future relationships.

The Love Better campaign is part of the government’s larger national policy to end family and sexual violence.

“New Zealand has shameful statistics of family and sexual violence and we need innovative approaches to break the cycle,” Radhakrishnan added.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the New Zealand Police investigate more than 100,000 cases of domestic violence each year.

According to the Ministry of Justice, police received 9,723 allegations of sexual assault in 2020, and over half of those who reported a sexual violence crime in New Zealand were under the age of 18 at the time of the occurrence.

Taiwan stated Thursday that it will withdraw its ambassador to Honduras as relations between the two deteriorate, with the Central American country ready to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying it had recalled the ambassador to “express our strong dissatisfaction” with Honduras sending its foreign minister and a group to Beijing this week.

The move “ignores the traditional friendship” between Honduras and Taiwan, which stretches back more than 80 years, and “seriously hurts the feelings of the Taiwan government and people,” said the statement.

It added that Taiwan had “repeatedly reminded the Honduran government of the risk of trusting China’s commitment to establishing diplomatic relations.”

Honduran President Xiomara Castro declared on March 15 that the country will establish diplomatic relations with China, thereby ending the country’s present connection with Taiwan.

China’s governing Communist Party has made the One China Policy a condition for diplomatic relations, requiring countries to terminate official connections with Taiwan, which it claims as part of its territory despite never having held it.

Just 14 nations have formal ties with Taiwan, including Honduras, with other countries in Central America and the Pacific switching recognition to China in recent years.

In 2018, El Salvador, Burkina Faso, and the Dominican Republic severed ties with Taiwan. Kiribati and the Solomon Islands followed suit the following year.

Last week, Honduras’ foreign minister praised China’s economic strength as “second only to the United States,” and expressed optimism that diplomatic ties would lead to investment and trade prospects.

According to Parsifal D’Sola, founder and head of the ABF China-Latin America Research Center, these economic benefits are especially tempting to emerging Latin American countries and difficult for Taiwan or its allies to dispute.

“This is basically something that Taiwan and the US, frankly, cannot compete with,” D’Sola said. “When you talk about investment in infrastructure, investment in green development, these are the types of foreign direct investments that these countries are looking for in the international arena.”

He also stated that China is “gaining ground” in these countries due to a lack of alternatives, such as economic support from the United States or the European Union.

China Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Wang Wenbin praised Castro’s declaration, saying Honduras was making the “right choice” that was “in line with the trend of historical development and progress of the times.”

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu advised Honduras not to “fall into China’s trap,” adding that the country was still striving to maintain bilateral ties. It also met with Harold Burgos, Honduras’ ambassador to Taiwan, to express “grave concern.”

Yet, by early Thursday, Wu had confessed that the situation was not hopeful.

“They have asked for a high price from us,” Wu told reporters in parliament, referring to the Honduran government. “Because we don’t compete with China in dollar diplomacy, so it has entered a very difficult stage. But all the colleagues at our embassy in Honduras are working hard and will work hard until the last moment.”

Wu also stated that China has been working worldwide to restrict Taiwan and that Taiwan would continue to build its international footprint.

Mr Gandhi was found guilty by a Gujarat court in 2019 for remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname during an election rally.

The Congress party MP was present in court for the sentence, which took place a year before the general election.

Mr Gandhi asked during an election rally in Karnataka state in April 2019, before of the previous general election: “Why do all of these thieves have the surname Modi? Narendra Modi, Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi.”

Nirav Modi is a wanted Indian diamond tycoon, whereas Lalit Modi is a former Indian Premier League commissioner who was banned for life by the country’s cricket body. Mr Gandhi claimed that he made the remark to highlight corruption and that it was not intended at any particular community.

Purnesh Modi, a politician from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, launched the action against him, claiming that Mr Gandhi’s words had defamed the whole Modi community.

Nonetheless, some people are perplexed by the sequence.

Legal scholar Gautam Bhatia tweeted that “references to a generic class of persons” – surnames in this case – are not “actionable unless an individual can show a direct reference to themselves”.

“If a man says ‘all lawyers are thieves’, then I, as a lawyer, cannot file a case against him for defamation unless I can show its imputation aimed at me,” Mr Bhatia said.

The criminal defamation law in India is British-era legislation, with a maximum jail penalty of two years, a fine, or both.

Free speech activists have frequently complained that the law violates free speech principles and is utilised by governments to muzzle their opponents.

In 2016, several prominent Indian politicians, including Mr Gandhi, filed court petitions calling for defamation to be decriminalised. Nonetheless, India’s Supreme Court affirmed the law’s legality, stating that the “right to free speech cannot mean that a citizen can defame the other.”

The Congress party tweeted that Mr Gandhi would appeal and said “we will fight and win”.

Mr Gandhi has not commented publicly yet but has tweeted a quote in Hindi from India’s independence leader Mahatma Gandhi: “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, and non-violence the means to get it.”

According to his counsel, Kirit Panwala, Mr Gandhi told the judge after the ruling that he delivered the statement “in favour of democracy.”

He also said that their defence of Mr Gandhi was based on four points: “Firstly, Mr Gandhi is not a resident of Gujarat and so, before the complaint, an inquiry should be conducted. Secondly, there is no community named Modi. Thirdly, there is no association of people with Modi as their surname and lastly, there was no ill intention behind Mr Gandhi’s speech.”

After the conviction, some have questioned Mr Gandhi’s standing as a member of parliament.

In India, defamation cannot be used to disqualify someone. An MP can be removed from office for offences ranging from inciting hatred to election-related fraud. They can, however, be disqualified if they are sentenced to two years or more in prison for an offence.

Mr Gandhi is a descendant of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, which has provided India three prime ministers. Jawaharlal Nehru, his great-grandfather, was India’s first and longest-serving prime minister. His grandmother, Indira Gandhi, was the country’s first female prime minister, and his father, Rajiv Gandhi, was the country’s youngest prime minister.

Their party, the Congress, controlled India virtually constantly – with the exception of a few years – from independence in 1947 until 2014, when Narendra Modi’s BJP won a resounding victory. Since then, the Congress has deteriorated into a ghost of its former self, and it was defeated once more by the BJP in the 2019 general election.

Authorities swoop across Brazil in search of ‘kidnap plot’

Senator Sergio Moro, a former judge who oversaw Brazil’s largest-ever corruption investigation, was also suspected of being targeted.

According to police sources, the gang was linked to Brazil’s greatest criminal organization.

On Wednesday, police conducted 24 raids in the capital, Brasilia, as well as in the states of Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondonia, and Parana.

According to federal authorities, the organization was planning “homicides and kidnapping for ransom” in at least five of Brazil’s 26 states, with the targets being “public personnel and officials.”

“A murder plot against several public officials was investigated and identified. Today the Federal Police is making arrests and searches against this gang,” Justice Minister Flavio Dino said on Twitter.

Mr. Dino did not name the people targeted in the gang’s operation, but Senator Moro stated on social media that he and his family had been targeted.

He accused Brazil’s most powerful criminal organization, First Capital Command (PCC), of plotting retaliation against him and other public officials.

According to sources, a government minister stated that the plan was organized by the gang and was not politically motivated.

Mr. Moro ordered the transfer of prominent gang members, including the PCC’s boss, to a maximum-security jail during his tenure as justice minister between 2019 and 2020.

The gang, a major cocaine exporter, has been linked to the assassination of a prominent Paraguayan prosecutor last year.

So I was like, ‘Okay, we need some other god then, I guess. Can we have [Helen Mirren’s] character actually survive? It’s gonna be so lame if she shows up.’ But that was sort of my Plan B.”

Fortunately, director Gal Gadot made it for Shazam 2, and fans got to witness Wonder Woman in the picture, which might be the final time they see her as the Amazonian Princess.

“She killed Mom,” Minh says of Rita Repulsa, the Power Rangers’ longtime antagonist played by Barbara Goodson.

The trailer also shows the moment Trini dies, with Rita telling the heroes, “After all these years, I’ve got a new body. It’s time for revenge.”

She employs a weapon to deliver a shock and blast that results in Trini’s death.

Later in the clip, the Blue Power Ranger (David Yost) finds Rita has built a time vortex through which they may travel back in time before they acquired their powers.

“I’ll kill you before Zordon makes you rangers,” she threatens.

Meanwhile, the rangers are on their own mission to eliminate Rita’s abilities as they battle it out in their retro attire.

Zords and Megazords make appearances in the teaser as well.

PARIS – France‘s highest administrative court ordered the government on Monday to stop fishing in regions of the Atlantic to safeguard dolphins that have washed up dead by the hundreds.

The State Council’s action comes only days after an oceanic institute announced that at least 910 dolphins have washed up on France’s Atlantic coast since the beginning of the winter.

More than 400 marine creatures were discovered stranded along the shore in a single week, an “unprecedented” number, according to the Pelagis oceanic observatory in the western city of La Rochelle.

Numerous environmental non-governmental organizations, including Sea Shepherd, had filed a court case against the government in connection with the dolphin and porpoise killings. They said that it was not doing enough to safeguard the species, which are on the verge of extinction in portions of the Bay of Biscay along the Atlantic coast.

Several dolphins died between February and March when they typically migrate closer to the coast in search of food and are more likely to come into touch with fishing operations.

Saudi Arabia frees US citizen imprisoned for tweeting

Saudi Arabia has released a US citizen who had been imprisoned for more than a year over tweets critical of the kingdom.

Saad Ibrahim Almadi, 72, a Saudi national, was detained in November 2021 while visiting his family in Riyadh.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison last year for tweets he wrote while in the United States.

Mr. Almadi’s release has received no comment from either the US or Saudi authorities.

His son, Ibrahim, acknowledged his father was in Riyadh at a family residence, but it was unclear when he would return to his home in Florida.

16-year travel ban

“All charges have been dropped but we have to fight the travel ban now,” Ibrahim told sources.

A Saudi court found Mr. Almadi guilty of attempting to destabilize the country as well as sponsoring and funding terrorists. He was also given a 16-year travel ban.

In a month, an appeals court doubled his sentence to 19 years.

This year, speaking publicly about the issue for the first time, Ibrahim told the sources that the sole evidence finally offered to the court against his father consisted of 14 tweets.

The tweets seen by the sources included criticism of the demolition of old portions of Mecca and Jeddah, concern about poverty in the country, and a reference to the slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to his son, Mr Almadi was also found guilty of failing to notify terrorism for tweets written on a second account by Ibrahim.

US President Joseph Biden said he mentioned Mr Almadi’s situation, as well as the cases of other US nationals still barred from entering Saudi Arabia, during discussions with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last July.

Mr Biden’s visit, some four years after Mr Khashoggi’s murder, saw him lobby for greater oil supplies and seek assistance in isolating Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

US urges Xi to press Putin on alleged “war crimes” in Ukraine

The US has urged China President Xi Jinping to persuade Vladimir Putin to “halt the war crimes” in Ukraine.

The two will meet again for official talks on Tuesday, during Mr. Xi’s first visit to Moscow since the invasion.

The National Security Council spokesman for the White House urged Mr. Xi to persuade his Russian counterpart to withdraw troops from Ukraine.

According to John Kirby, seeking a cease-fire will not suffice.

“We hope that President Xi will press President Putin to cease bombing Ukrainian cities, hospitals, and schools, to halt the war crimes and atrocities, and to withdraw his troops,” he said.

“But we are concerned that instead, China will reiterate calls for a ceasefire that leaves Russian forces inside Ukraine’s sovereign territory and any ceasefire that does not address the removal of Russian forces from Ukraine would effectively ratify Russia’s illegal conquests.”

Hours of informal talks

Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin spent more than four hours of “informal” talks on Monday, with more official meetings slated for Tuesday.

There are fears that China’s support for Russia, which is presently centered on technology and trade, will evolve into military support, potentially involving artillery shells.

Mr. Putin has said he will consider a 12-point plan provided by Mr. Xi to “settle the acute crisis in Ukraine”.

“We’re always open for a negotiation process,” Mr. Putin said, as the leaders called each other “dear friends”.

Last month, China announced its strategy to end the war, which includes “ceasing hostilities” and resuming peace talks.

China’s approach made no mention of Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine, which Ukraine has stressed is a prerequisite for any negotiations.

Unilateral sanctions

Instead, it talked of “respecting the sovereignty of all countries”, adding that “all parties must stay rational and exercise restraint” and “gradually de-escalate the situation”.

The plan also opposed the use of “unilateral sanctions,” which was interpreted as a veiled criticism of Ukraine’s Western backers.

A military band welcomed Mr. Xi to Moscow on the first day of his three-day tour on Monday. Mr. Putin lauded China for “observing the principles of fairness” and fighting for “undivided security for every country”.

He added that China had made” a tremendous leap forward in its development” in recent years, remarking: “We even feel a bit envious.”

In return, Mr. Xi told Mr. Putin: “Under your strong leadership, Russia has made great strides in its prosperous development. I am confident that the Russian people will continue to give you their firm support.”

Before Mr. Xi arrived, Mr. Putin stated in China’s People’s Daily that “aggressive” US behavior would not harm the two countries.

Ukrainian authorities have officially emphasized their shared values with China, such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, but secretly, they have lobbied for a meeting or phone call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mr. Xi.

Positive role

Mr. Kirby, the US security spokesperson, repeated this, urging Mr. Xi to “take a positive role” in the effort to end the dispute by communicating with Mr. Zelenskyy.

Russia provides energy to Beijing’s massive economy and is viewed as a partner in opposing the US.

In another event, Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has indicated that he will visit Kyiv on Tuesday to meet with President Zelensky. Following Russia’s invasion, he is expected to express sympathy and support for Ukraine.

Mr. Xi’s visit to Moscow comes just days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges. This means that Mr. Putin might be detained in 123 nations, however, neither China nor Russia is on that list.

Western officials have been striving to isolate Russia since last February, following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Yet, they have been unable to reach a worldwide agreement, with China, India, and numerous African countries refusing to denounce Mr. Putin.

Sri Lanka receives a $3 billion IMF bailout

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $3 billion (£2.4 billion) bailout for Sri Lanka, which is facing its worst economic crisis since independence.

The agreement, which has been in the works for about a year, is a lifeline for the country, which has billions of dollars in loans.

According to Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, the government plans to raise funds by restructuring state-owned enterprises and privatizing the national airline.

Analysts, however, warn that Sri Lanka faces a difficult road ahead.

The epidemic, rising oil prices, populist tax cuts, and more than 50% inflation have all had a significant impact on the country’s economy.

Widespread riots

A lack of medications, fuel, and other necessities also contributed to record-high living costs, sparking widespread riots that ousted the ruling administration in 2022.

As a result, for the first time in its history, the government defaulted on its debts to international lenders in May.

“We have lived beyond our means. Whether we like it or not, these difficult measures which may be very unpopular need to be taken,” Mr. Sabry said in an interview before the funding was announced.

“Luckily, most [people] other than politically-motivated unions have understood that. I know they are not happy, but they also understand we have no choice,” Mr. Sabry added.

The country imposed income taxes on professionals earlier this year, ranging from 12.5% to more than 36%.

It also increased other levies to fund necessary purchases such as fuel and food.

This is in stark contrast to the big tax cuts former Sri Lanka president Gotabaya Rajapaksa introduced in 2019, which lost the government income of more than $1.4bn (£1.14bn) a year.

Andrew Wood, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings, stated: “Sri Lanka still has a long way to go before it can consolidate its government financial sheet, achieve steady economic development, and achieve external stability.

“We expect the economy to contract again in 2023, albeit at a more modest pace, before returning to growth in 2024.”

The IMF announced earlier this month that Sri Lanka has received finance commitments from all of its key creditors, including China and India, paving the path for the bailout.

Mr. Sabry said it was “a little early” to speculate on whether China, Sri Lanka’s largest bilateral lender, might consider canceling part of the country’s loans.

“We have the will to pay, but we don’t have the capacity to pay. What we are now trying to do is get that capacity back,” he said.

“That’s going to be a very difficult and serious discussion.”

The Sri Lankan government had planned to reach an agreement with China and India on a new payment arrangement by the end of 2022.

Sri Lanka is owed approximately $7 billion (£5.71 billion) by China, whereas India is owing approximately $1 billion (£820 million).

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: “The world should not be fooled by any tactical move by Russia, supported by China or any other country, to freeze the war on its own terms.”

He added: “Calling for a ceasefire that does not include the removal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory would effectively be supporting the ratification of Russian conquest.”

Ukrainian politicians have publicly emphasized their shared values with China, such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

They have, however, discreetly lobbied for a meeting – or phone conversation – between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mr Xi.

The concern in Kyiv is that China’s support for Russia, which is presently based on technology and trade, may expand to include artillery munitions.

“If China does move to openly supply weapons to Russia, it will in effect be taking part in the conflict on the side of the aggressor,” said Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council.

According to Yu Jie, a research fellow on China at Chatham House, it was in Beijing’s best interests to normalize relations with Russia, with whom it shares a 4,300km (2,700 miles) border.

Russia provides energy to Beijing’s massive economy and is viewed as a partner in opposing the US.

Ms. Yu went on to say that Mr. Xi had just won a diplomatic success by facilitating the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Xi was treated to a seven-course supper on Monday evening, which included nelma fish from the Pechora River in northern Russia, a classic Russian seafood soup, and pancakes with quail – all accompanied by Russian wine.

Dmitry Peskov, the presidential spokesperson, said there will be a “detailed explanation” of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine over dinner. On Tuesday, the main day of the visit, Russian and Chinese representatives will meet.

Ukraine claims Russian missiles were destroyed in Crimea

According to Ukraine‘s defense ministry, an explosion in the north of seized Crimea destroyed Russian weapons being transported by rail.

The newly installed Russian mayor of Dzhankoi claimed that drones had targeted the area.

Ukraine confirmed the blasts but did not specifically state who was behind the attack, as is customary.

If confirmed, it would be an unusual venture into Crimea by Ukraine’s military, which has been annexed since 2014.

“The [explosions] continue Russia‘s demilitarisation process and prepare the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea for de-occupation,” the Ukrainian defense ministry said in a statement.

According to Kyiv, the missiles were meant for use by Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

The Russia-installed administrator, Ihor Ivin, claimed a 33-year-old male was rushed to the hospital with a shrapnel injury from a fallen drone. He said nothing about military targets being damaged.

According to local media, several structures caught fire and the power grid was affected.

In October 2022, Russia blamed Ukraine for a drone attack on the Black Sea Navy in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol.

It claimed nine drones were employed in a strike that damaged a battleship. Ukraine denied responsibility for the strike.
