Taiwan recalls ambassador from Honduras

Taiwan
  • Taiwan stated Thursday that it will withdraw its ambassador to Honduras.
  • In 2018, El Salvador, Burkina Faso, and the Dominican Republic severed ties with Taiwan.
  • Wu had confessed that the situation was not hopeful.

Taiwan stated Thursday that it will withdraw its ambassador to Honduras as relations between the two deteriorate, with the Central American country ready to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying it had recalled the ambassador to “express our strong dissatisfaction” with Honduras sending its foreign minister and a group to Beijing this week.

The move “ignores the traditional friendship” between Honduras and Taiwan, which stretches back more than 80 years, and “seriously hurts the feelings of the Taiwan government and people,” said the statement.

It added that Taiwan had “repeatedly reminded the Honduran government of the risk of trusting China’s commitment to establishing diplomatic relations.”

Honduran President Xiomara Castro declared on March 15 that the country will establish diplomatic relations with China, thereby ending the country’s present connection with Taiwan.

China’s governing Communist Party has made the One China Policy a condition for diplomatic relations, requiring countries to terminate official connections with Taiwan, which it claims as part of its territory despite never having held it.

Just 14 nations have formal ties with Taiwan, including Honduras, with other countries in Central America and the Pacific switching recognition to China in recent years.

In 2018, El Salvador, Burkina Faso, and the Dominican Republic severed ties with Taiwan. Kiribati and the Solomon Islands followed suit the following year.

Last week, Honduras’ foreign minister praised China’s economic strength as “second only to the United States,” and expressed optimism that diplomatic ties would lead to investment and trade prospects.

According to Parsifal D’Sola, founder and head of the ABF China-Latin America Research Center, these economic benefits are especially tempting to emerging Latin American countries and difficult for Taiwan or its allies to dispute.

“This is basically something that Taiwan and the US, frankly, cannot compete with,” D’Sola said. “When you talk about investment in infrastructure, investment in green development, these are the types of foreign direct investments that these countries are looking for in the international arena.”

He also stated that China is “gaining ground” in these countries due to a lack of alternatives, such as economic support from the United States or the European Union.

China Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Wang Wenbin praised Castro’s declaration, saying Honduras was making the “right choice” that was “in line with the trend of historical development and progress of the times.”

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu advised Honduras not to “fall into China’s trap,” adding that the country was still striving to maintain bilateral ties. It also met with Harold Burgos, Honduras’ ambassador to Taiwan, to express “grave concern.”

Yet, by early Thursday, Wu had confessed that the situation was not hopeful.

“They have asked for a high price from us,” Wu told reporters in parliament, referring to the Honduran government. “Because we don’t compete with China in dollar diplomacy, so it has entered a very difficult stage. But all the colleagues at our embassy in Honduras are working hard and will work hard until the last moment.”

Wu also stated that China has been working worldwide to restrict Taiwan and that Taiwan would continue to build its international footprint.

Honduras seeks diplomatic switch to China

Honduras
  • China has long sought to isolate Taiwan and has barred its partners from maintaining ties.
  • Taiwan swiftly urged Honduras against falling into China’s “trap.”
  • Taiwan has lost eight diplomatic friends since Tsai Ing-wen was elected president in 2016.

Taiwan risks losing one of its few formal allies, Honduras, as the Central American country seeks official relations with China.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro stated that the pivot intends to broaden the country’s foreign engagements.

Taiwan swiftly urged Honduras against falling into China’s “trap”.

China has long sought to isolate Taiwan and has barred its partners from maintaining ties with the island, which it claims to be part of its sovereignty.

If Honduras sides with China, Taiwan would be recognized by only 13 states.

It will also strengthen Beijing’s position in a region that has generally supported its adversary, the United States.

On Wednesday, China’s foreign ministry welcomed the Honduran leader’s statement and said it was willing to develop “friendly and cooperative relations” with the country.

China has sought to increase its global influence as its leader, Xi Jinping, consolidates control at home while recovering the economy after the devastating zero-Covid policy.

Taiwan has lost eight diplomatic friends since Tsai Ing-wen was elected president in 2016.

Ms. Castro, who takes office in 2021, said she had directed her foreign minister to develop official relations with Beijing, fulfilling a campaign promise.

The Honduran president did not specify whether or not relations with Taiwan will be severed. Yet, in January 2022, she stated that she planned to maintain those ties.

Several weeks before Ms. Castro’s declaration, her government announced that it was in talks with China to develop a hydroelectric dam. Honduras has received a $300 million (£246 million) loan from Beijing for a similar project in 2021.

“We ask Honduras to carefully consider and do not fall into China’s trap and make the wrong decision to damage the long-term friendship between Taiwan and Honduras,” the island’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Ms. Castro’s move also comes before of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s tour to Central American allies, which will include a stopover in the United States, next month, a move that is certain to exacerbate tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Ms. Tsai will meet with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during her visit. To Beijing’s chagrin, she met Mr. McCarthy’s predecessor, Nancy Pelosi, in Taipei last year.

China has continued to push itself on the other side of the world as it charms Latin America.

David Panuelo, the outgoing president of the Pacific island nation of Micronesia, accused China of eavesdropping and seeking to pay local politicians to bring his country on board with Beijing. Mr. Panuelo made his concerns in a letter to Congress last week.

Mexico: Over 340 migrants discovered in a truck trailer

Mexico
  • Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people including 103 unaccompanied minors.
  • Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador were among the countries represented by the migrants.
  • Everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people, including 103 unaccompanied minors, in an abandoned truck trailer in the state of Veracruz.

Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador were among the countries represented by the migrants. It is one of the most recent and significant discoveries of migrant children travelling through Mexico.

According to officials, everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

The location of the driver is unknown.

Many undocumented migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America end up paying large sums of money to people smugglers to cross the US border.

Last year, 53 migrants were discovered dead in an abandoned truck trailer in Texas, the United States.

According to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM), 343 people were discovered in the vehicle on Sunday night.

They were discovered on a common route used by migrants to reach the US border.

According to officials, the migrants wore color-coded bracelets to identify themselves as clients of smugglers.

Plastic bottles and trash were strewn across the trailer’s floor, according to an image.

Mexican social services will care for the migrants until their legal status is determined.

According to border patrol data obtained by a channel in October, at least 853 migrants died in the previous year while attempting to illegally cross the US-Mexico border.

This made the fiscal year 2022 the deadliest year for migrants in US history, far exceeding the previous record of 546 migrant deaths in 2021.

During the same time period, the US Border Patrol apprehended a record 2.2 million migrants at the southwest border.
