Petrol, diesel prices likely to increase from Jan 16

Petrol

ISLAMABAD: The petrol and diesel prices are expected to increase from January 16, 2025 (Thursday) due to higher international prices.

The price of petrol has been estimated to increase by Rs 3.53 per liter and the price of diesel by Rs 3.66 per liter for the next fortnight from yesterday, Thursday (January 16, 2025).

The expected increase in POL prices is being attributed to the increase in oil prices in the international market due to United States (US) restrictions on oil exports to China and India.

Crude oil prices surged past $81 a barrel, the highest since August 2024, on fears that US shipping restrictions could affect Russian oil supplies in the wake of US sanctions.

Industry and government sources said an increase in kerosene oil by Rs 4.98 per liter and light diesel oil (LDO) by Rs 6.20 per liter has been worked out, but the final decision rests with decision makers in the finance ministry.

UN chief congratulates Donald Trump on election victory

UN chief

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory as president of the United States, saying he looked forward to working with him.

During his first term 2017-21, Trump had a tense relationship with the U.N. after he cut funding to UNRWA, the agency for Palestinian refugees, targeted the World Health Organization (WHO), as also UNESCO.

“I commend the people of the United States of America for their active participation in the democratic process,” the UN chief said in a statement.

Guterres also reaffirmed his “belief that the cooperation between the United States and the United Nations is an essential pillar of international relations.”

“The United Nations stands ready to work constructively with the incoming administration to address the dramatic challenges our world is facing,” it noted.

Trump defeated US Vice President Kamala Harris after winning 277 Electoral College votes in Tuesday’s election. He also led Harris by about 5 million votes in the popular count, getting around 71 million votes.

Trump and his running mate JD Vance will be sworn into office in Washington D.C. on Jan. 20.

How are votes counted in US Election?

US Election

WASHINGTON: On November 05, tens of millions of voters will step into ballot booths across the United States.

But the results of the election – including whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will be the next president – will not be official until votes are counted and verified, which could take days to fully complete.

In the battleground states expected to decide the election’s winner, the process will be highly scrutinized.

Trump is already questioning the trustworthiness of many of their voting processes and in 2020 he challenged the results of many of their votes in court.

The first polls will begin closing at 18:00 EST (23:00 BST) on Tuesday, but counting votes will extend far beyond then.

In most cases, it can take weeks to reach an official tally, partly because of state rules.

For example, in two battleground states – Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – election workers are not allowed to begin processing mailed-in ballots until election day. That is expected to slow the counting greatly.

It’s important to note that news organisations use unofficial results and projections when they announce winners on election night or the following days, instead of waiting for the final and official count.

Counting, too, varies from location to location and depends on equipment used.

Some counties “feed” ballots into optical scanners, while others may use touch-screen systems or ballot-marking devices to record votes.

The scanners are the most common. They tabulate results, which are then manually recounted and double-checked by hand.

Results are, in turn, shared with electoral officials, the parties and eventually with the public.

The counting can be slowed down by disruptions, legal challenges or complications around provisional ballots.

As of 1 November, there were 203 voting and election cases pending in 40 states, according to Marc Elias, a Democratic election lawyer who filed many of the responses to Trump’s 2020 lawsuits.

They are concentrated in the battleground states of Georgia, which has 25 legal challenges, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Arizona, according to his count.

Provisional ballots are given to voters when it is unclear whether they are eligible to cast ballots. This could happen, for example, if a person cannot be found in rolls of registered voters.

Ballots can also be challenged by election workers or – in some states – by poll watchers. Once challenged, ballots must be reviewed by election supervisors and made available to state canvass boards before being included, or stricken, from the official final tally.

Each state has its own procedure for recounts and what can trigger them.

FO says listing of commercial entities on allegations takes place without evidences

FO

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office Spokesperson commenting upon reports of United States’ decision to impose sanctions against commercial entities on allegations of links with Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme, said that such listings had taken place in the past without sharing any evidence whatsoever.

Responding to media queries, the spokesperson, in a press statement, said while they were not aware of the specifics of the latest measures by the US.

In the past, they had come across many instances where listings had been made on mere suspicion or even when the involved items were not on any control lists but were deemed sensitive under catch-all provisions, it was added. “We have pointed out many times that such items have legitimate civil commercial uses. It is, therefore, important to avoid arbitrary application of export controls,” the spokesperson said.

There was need for discussions between concerned parties for an objective mechanism to ensure access to technology in pursuit of socio-economic development, it was stressed.

The spokesperson said Pakistan had always been ready to discuss end-use and end-user verification mechanisms so that legitimate commercial users are not hurt by discriminatory application of export controls. “Pakistan rejects political use of export controls.

It is a reality that the same jurisdictions, which claim to exercise strict non-proliferation controls, have waived off licensing requirements for advanced military technologies for some countries,” it was added.
