Miss Universe Pakistan 2023 Declares Her Commitment To Cultural Values

Miss Universe Pakistan 2023
  • Miss Universe Pakistan 2023 vows to uphold her country’s honor.
  • Erica Robin, a 24-year-old model, is set to make history.
  • Robin invites global audiences to explore Pakistan’s cultural richness.

“For the first time, someone from Pakistan will be representing the Miss Universe pageant. There is a huge responsibility on me and of course the pressure, but I will not do anything that will bring any shame,” asserts the inaugural Miss Universe Pakistan 2023, in response to criticism from clerics and the caretaker government.

Erica Robin, a 24-year-old model, has been chosen to represent Pakistan in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, marking a unique moment that has garnered both praise and criticism.

Robin expresses her honor in participating in the competition set for November 18 in El Salvador, where women from 90 countries will join. In conversations with media outlets, she firmly states that she will abstain from wearing a bikini during the competition, vowing not to disappoint her nation with her actions. This stance aligns with the belief that pageant swimwear is intended to provide a fun platform for models to showcase their physique, confidence, and personality to judges.

Upon securing the title, Robin conveys profound gratitude for becoming “the first ever Miss Universe Pakistan” and extends an invitation to the audience to savor Pakistani cuisine and explore the country’s lush landscapes.

She underscores her honor and humility in representing Pakistan on the global stage and aims to spotlight the nation’s beauty. Robin emphasizes the often overlooked positive aspects of Pakistani culture and highlights the generosity, kindness, and hospitality of its people.

Additionally, she invites everyone to visit Pakistan, experience its exquisite cuisine, and explore its captivating natural wonders, including snow-capped mountains, lush greenery, and progressive landscapes, as conveyed in an Instagram statement.

The Miss Universe pageant is an annual event co-hosted by the United States and Thailand, boasting an estimated annual budget of $100 million. Established on June 28, 1952, the competition welcomes women from around the world, evaluating them based on beauty, intelligence, professional accomplishments, and social contributions, transcending boundaries of color, caste, language, religion, and culture.

El Salvador initiates transfers to a “mega prison” amid gang crackdown

El Salvador
  • Some 2,000 alleged gang members were transferred to the 40,000-person capacity prison.
  • More than 64,000 individuals have been apprehended in the anti-crime dragnet.
  • Human rights organizations claim that the strategy has harmed innocent people.

El Salvador‘s government transferred hundreds of suspected gang members to a newly opened “mega-prison” on Friday, the latest step in a contentious crackdown on crime that has caused the Central American country’s prison population to skyrocket.

“This will be their new home, where they won’t be able to do any more harm to the population,” President Nayib Bukele wrote on Twitter.

Some 2,000 alleged gang members were transferred to the 40,000-person capacity prison, which is considered the largest in the Americas, early Friday morning.

In a video shared by Bukele, convicts with white shorts and shaven heads are shown fleeing through the new prison into cells. There are numerous bear gang tattoos.

With a huge increase in homicides attributable to violent gangs, Bukele pushed his friends in El Salvador’s Congress to pass a state of exception last year, which has subsequently been renewed many times, suspending some constitutional rights.

More than 64,000 individuals have been apprehended in the anti-crime dragnet since then. Arrests can be done without a warrant, the government has access to private correspondence, and detainees no longer have the right to counsel.

Human rights organizations claim that the strategy has harmed innocent people, including at least dozens who have died in police detention.

Nonetheless, Bukele’s anti-gang campaign remains popular among Salvadorans, and the country’s security minister stated that it would continue until all criminals were apprehended.

Central African Republic dives into crypto with the Sango

Central African Republic
  • The Central African Republic (CAR) has announced plans to launch its own digital currency.
  • Sango Coin will be the first zero-taxation “crypto-hub” in Africa, President Faustin Archange Touadera declared.
  • The CAR is rated the world’s second poorest nation under the UN’s Human Development Index.

Undeterred by the crypto-crisis, the Central African Republic (CAR), one of the world’s poorest and most troubled countries, has announced plans to launch its own digital currency.

President Faustin Archange Touadera announced the Sango Coin and the first zero-taxation “crypto-hub” in Africa in a “online event” on Sunday.

The currency is named after Sango, which with French is one of the two official languages in the landlocked country, rated the world’s second poorest nation under the UN’s Human Development Index.

Through a platform called Crypto Island, the Sango will become “the catalyst for tokenising (CAR’s) vast natural resources,” Touadera declared, providing no timeline or other details.

He hailed Sango and Crypto Island as “a new digital system fed by blockchain,” the internet-based ledger that underpins crypto currencies.

“Sango Coin will give the whole world direct access to our resources,” attracting investors and “getting the engines of the economy going,” he enthused.

On April 27, Touadera’s office abruptly announced that the CAR had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the CFA franc, a currency the country shares with five other central African economies.

It became the first country in Africa to embrace Bitcoin as a national currency, and the second in the world after El Salvador last September.

The April announcement sparked bemusement among analysts, given the entrenched poverty and lack of infrastructure in the CAR, where only one person in seven has access to mains electricity.

They also voiced concern about the impact of crypto volatility on savings.

Virtual currencies have gone into a tailspin as investors look to safer havens at a time of inflation and uncertainty sparked by the Ukraine war.

Bitcoin has lost nearly 60 percent of its value over the past six months.

Touadera on Sunday said 57 percent of Africa’s population does not have access to a bank.

“The solution,” he said, was “the smartphone, the alternative to the traditional bank, cash and financial red tape”.

On Twitter, he said, “gold served as the engine of our civilisation for ages! In this new age, digital gold will serve the same for the future.”

The CAR’s rush to crypto has been seen by some critics in the context of its closer ties with Russia.

Touadera has been accused of using Russian paramilitaries to buttress his regime and offering CAR’s natural resources in exchange.

The country has a treasure chest of minerals, ranging from copper and gold to diamonds and uranium.

The CAR, a former French colony, plunged into a civil war along sectarian lines in 2013 after the then-president, Francois Bozize, was ousted.

Touadera was elected for the first time in 2016 after an interim period, and he was re-elected in disputed circumstances in 2020.

Although violence decreased in 2018, rebel forces remained active.
