North Korea fires ballistic missile towards sea

North Korea
  • North Korea launched at least six short-range missiles.
  • About 28,000 American forces are stationed in South Korea.
  • The missiles fired in North Korea’s test on Thursday were launched into the Yellow Sea.

North Korea launched at least six short-range missiles on Thursday afternoon, analysts said, in what could be the first salvo in weeks of military displays on both sides of the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas.

Photos distributed by state-run media, published photos of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attending a fire drill for the Hwasong artillery unit on the western front on Friday.

“Kim Jong Un examined the actual war response posture of the 8th fire assault company under the unit charged with striking the enemy’s operation airport in the direction of the western front,” reported.

About 28,000 American forces are stationed in South Korea, where the US Air Force operates two major airfields: Osan, about 64 kilometres (40 miles) south of Seoul, and Kunsan, on the Yellow Sea coast in the country’s west.

The missiles fired in North Korea’s test on Thursday were launched into the Yellow Sea.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported shortly after the test that North Korea had fired a short-range ballistic missile from the Nampo area in the country’s west.

According to reports, Kim stated that artillery units should be ready for two missions: “first to deter war and second to take the initiative in war, by steadily intensifying various simulated drills for real war.”

The newspaper published several photos from the firing drill, including one of Kim Jong Un with his daughter and North Korean military officials. Kim’s daughter, believed to be named Ju Ae, has recently appeared alongside her father at major events in North Korea.

Pyongyang is conducting winter training, which is being monitored by US and South Korean intelligence agencies, according to a spokesman for South Korea’s Defense Ministry on Thursday.

“Training is usually held until March,” ministry spokesman Jeon Ha-kyu added.

On Monday, US, South Korean, and UN Command forces on the peninsula will begin the 11-day Freedom Shield exercises, which “will integrate elements of ‘live exercises’ with constructive simulations,” according to a statement issued by US Forces Korea last week.

Warrior Shield field training exercises will take place at the same time, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the United States and South Korea have been conducting regular air exercises. According to USFK, a US B-52 bomber was escorted by South Korean fighter jets this week as it flew into the South’s air defence identification zone.

The US-South Korean exercises are expected to be the largest in years, after the two allies scaled back such military displays in 2017 when then-US President Donald Trump attempted to offer an opening for North Korea to negotiate an end to its long-range missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

That window has long since closed, with North Korea conducting a record number of missile tests last year while promising to expand its nuclear programme to arm the missiles.

In 2023, North Korean missile testing has slowed, but tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high.

Analysts see little reason to believe that things will improve.

“This is likely only the beginning of a series of provocative tests by North Korea,” Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ehwa Womans University in Seoul, said of Thursday’s missile firings.

“Pyongyang is poised to respond aggressively to major US-South Korea defense exercises, as well as to President Yoon’s upcoming summits with (Japanese) Prime Minister (Fumio) Kishida and (US) President (Joe) Biden.”

“The Kim regime may order missile firings of longer ranges, attempt a spy satellite launch, demonstrate a solid-fuel engine, and perhaps even conduct a nuclear test,” Easley said.

Katy Perry bullied an American Idol contestant?

Katy Perry
  • Fans are wondering why Katy Perry was upset with the red-haired mother of three.
  • Katy Perry has been a judge on the famous singing competition for a long time.
  • It was difficult for the mother of three to face Katy Perry.

Fans are wondering why Katy Perry was upset with the red-haired mother of three, Sara Beth Liebe. Katy Perry has been a judge on the famous singing competition for a long time, and there has never been any mention of Katy’s rude behaviour with American Idol contestants, as she enjoys and is always cheerful to whoever appears on the show.

Katy Perry and Sara Beth Liebe

Sara Beth Liebe performed Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” during her audition for American Idol. But the 25-year-old was requested to perform another song by Katy Perry, who also offered her some advice.

While she was quoted as saying that being a singer isn’t her dream just yet because her voice isn’t convincing. While the other judges praised her performance, Katy appeared to be unconvinced by her vocals. She continued, “Show us what your voice can do. Take it to the limit. No looking back. Sing it like it’s your new dream.”

Following her performance of ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ “Sara Beth was on the verge of passing out. But what went wrong here was Katy Perry’s comparison of her comeback to, as she quoted, “a ‘comic strip character that just came to life’.

The judges awarded Sara Beth Liebe the golden ticket, but it was difficult for the mother of three to face Katy Perry. As she mentioned, if this isn’t your dream, don’t go too far with it. Many others enter the door with a wish and a dream to visit Hollywood and who truly deserve a golden ticket.

Suppressing China won’t make America great, says Qin Gang

US-China relations have deteriorated significantly

China
  • China’s foreign minister has stated that US-China relations have “seriously deviated”.
  • Mr Qin held his first press conference as foreign minister.
  • He also said the diplomatic crisis caused by the balloon incident could have been averted.

China’s foreign minister has stated that US-China relations have “seriously deviated,” while also threatening conflict.

“Containment and suppression will not make America great. It will not stop the rejuvenation of China,” said Qin Gang.

On Tuesday, Mr Qin, China‘s former ambassador to the United States, held his first press conference as foreign minister.

Despite recent efforts to improve relations, the spy balloon saga has heightened tensions between the superpowers.

“It [the US] regards China as its primary rival and the most consequential geopolitical challenge. This is like the first button in the shirt being put wrong,” Mr Qin said.

The foreign minister was responding to a question about whether a healthy US-China relationship was still possible as the two countries’ differences grew.

The US has called for “guardrails,” but what it really wants is for China not to respond with words or actions when provoked, according to Mr Qin.

He was referring to US President Joe Biden’s comments last month that the US would “compete fully with China but [is] not looking conflict”.

Mr Qin said: “If the US does not put on the brakes and continues to roar down the wrong road, no amount of guardrails can stop the derailment and overturning, and it is bound to fall into conflict and confrontation. Who will bear its disastrous consequences?”

He also said the diplomatic crisis caused by the balloon incident could have been averted but the US acted with “the presumption of guilt”.

The suspected spy balloon was previously described as a “clear violation of US sovereignty” by Washington. Beijing acknowledged ownership of the object, but claimed it was a civilian airship that had been blown off course.

Mr Qin claimed that the Ukraine crisis was being driven by a “invisible hand,” but he did not name any country or individual. He reiterated that China had not supplied weapons to either side of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and called for the resumption of peace talks.

“Why should the US demand that China refrain from supplying arms to Russia when it sells arms to Taiwan?” he asked.

The Ukraine crisis has reached a “critical juncture,” according to him.

“Either a ceasefire will stop the war, restore peace and embark on a political settlement, or fuel the fire, expand the crisis and drag it into the abyss of losing control.”

Mr Qin, 56, was appointed China’s foreign minister in December 2022, making him one of the country’s youngest foreign ministers. He took over for Wang Yi, who was promoted to the ruling Communist Party’s politburo in October of that year.

Mr Qin, a trusted aide to Chinese President Xi Jinping, is known as a tough-talking diplomat.

Rampage against Palestinians after gunman kills Israeli-American

Israeli
  • The victim was killed during an automobile attack.
  • That attack came after a Palestinian shot dead two settlers.
  • Assailants opened fire on Israeli vehicles three times before setting fire to their own vehicles.

As retaliatory violence escalates, an Israeli-American has been shot and murdered in the occupied West Bank.

The victim was killed during an automobile attack on a highway near Jericho.

The shooting occurred after Israeli settlers raided Palestinian towns in the West Bank on Sunday night, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of cars and residences.

That attack came after a Palestinian shot dead two settlers from an adjacent community on Sunday.

The Israeli-American man slain near Jericho was brought to a hospital in Jerusalem by paramedics, but he was subsequently pronounced dead.

US Ambassador Tom Nides tweeted: “Sadly, I can confirm that a US citizen was killed in one of the terror attacks in the West Bank tonight. I pray for his family.”

According to the Israeli Defense Forces, assailants opened fire on Israeli vehicles three times before setting fire to their own vehicles.

The attackers exchanged fire with police before fleeing, according to the IDF.

No Palestinian organizations immediately claimed responsibility.

The Islamic organization Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip but is less visible in the West Bank, claimed responsibility for the strike, saying it was a logical response to Israeli attacks.

“The crimes conducted by the occupation and the herds of settlers will not be met but with stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming,” a spokesman said in a statement.

During a summit in Jordan, Israeli and Palestinian officials promised to de-escalate tensions.

Videos posted hours after the summit finished on Sunday showed a large throng of Israeli settlers setting fires and throwing stones in the town of Hawara, about 4 miles (6 kilometers) south of Nablus.

Sameh Aqtash, 37, died after being shot in the stomach during a settlers’ attack in Zaatara on Sunday night, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

This area of the West Bank is completely under Israeli authority, and Palestinians have been critical of Israeli security personnel for failing to safeguard them.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he held the Israeli government totally responsible for what he called “the terrorist crimes carried out by Israeli settlers, under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces”.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, asked for calm and urged settlers to allow the Israeli military and security agencies to focus on finding the gunman who killed the two Israelis.

“I ask that when blood is boiling and the spirit is hot, don’t take the law into your hands,” he said in a video statement.

Settlers had called for a march to Hawara to “seek revenge” for the murderous attack on Hillel and Yagel Yaniv, who lived in Har Bracha, 1.2 miles south of Nablus.

A Palestinian guy struck the brothers’ car and then shot them both many times as they drove through Hawara.

So far, no Palestinian terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the shooting, but the gunman was reportedly wearing a shirt with the logo of the Nablus-based Lions’ Den.

Members of the group were targeted in an Israeli raid in Nablus last Wednesday, which murdered 11 Palestinians, including several civilians – the worst such operation in the West Bank since 2005.

Israeli soldiers have been conducting waves of search, arrest, and intelligence-gathering operations in Nablus and the adjoining city of Jenin, claiming that they are attempting to halt a string of deadly Palestinian attacks against Israelis.

More than 60 Palestinians, both terrorists, and civilians, have been slain by Israeli forces since the beginning of the year. On the Israeli side, 14 individuals have been murdered in attacks, all of whom were civilians with the exception of a paramilitary police officer.

More than 600,000 Jews live in 140 settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Most of the international community considers the settlements illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

Israel and the Palestinians reach an agreement to reduce bloodshed

Israel
  • Israeli and Palestinian officials said that they will work closely to prevent “future bloodshed.”
  • Israel had pledged to suspend discussing setting up any new settlement units.
  • The joint statement came at the end of a conference attended by American, Egyptian, and Jordanian officials.

Israel and Palestine: During meetings in Jordan, Israeli and Palestinian officials promised to put steps in place to de-escalate the escalating violence.

In a joint statement at the end of the conference in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba on Sunday, Israeli and Palestinian officials said that they will work closely to prevent “future bloodshed” and that they “reaffirmed the necessity of committing to de-escalation on the ground”.

Israel had pledged to suspend “discussing setting up any new settlement units for four months and stop approving any new settlements for six months”, a joint statement said.

The Palestinian and Israeli parties “reaffirmed the need to commit to de-escalation on the ground and to prevent further violence” following “thorough and candid discussions,” it said.

The joint statement came at the end of a conference attended by American, Egyptian, and Jordanian officials, who were concerned about an escalation of violence in the run-up to Ramadan, which begins in late March.

According to the statement, Israel and the Palestinian Authority emphasized their “joint readiness and commitment to work immediately to stop unilateral measures” for three to six months.

Jordan, Egypt, and the United States saw “these understandings as major progress towards re-establishing and deepening relations between the two sides,” according to the statement.

According to White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the meeting constituted a “starting point” for the US.

“There is much work to do over the coming weeks and months to build a stable and prosperous future for Israelis and Palestinians alike,” Sullivan said of the Aqaba meeting. “Implementation will be critical.”

The two parties have agreed to meet again next month in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh.

The Hamas movement, which governs the constrained Gaza Strip, has attacked the Palestinian Authority, which is based in the West Bank. According to a group official, the meeting was “worthless” and would not change anything.

The conference has previously been defended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s ruling Fatah movement.

“The decision to take part in the Aqaba meeting despite the pain and massacres being endured by the Palestinian people comes from a desire to bring an end to the bloodshed,” it said on Twitter.

Israel’s Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who is also in charge of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, swiftly stated that he would not comply with any deal to halt settlement expansion.

“I have no idea what they spoke about or not in Jordan,” Smotrich wrote on Twitter. “But one thing I do know: there will not be a freeze on the building and development in settlements, not even for one day (it is under my authority).”

‘Fremont’ cast & director discuss women of Afghanistan & refugees

  • Fremont, a Sundance film by director Babak Jalali.
  • Fremont is an intimate, endearing, and melancholy picture of loneliness.
  • It is a restless immigrant story that conveys a sense of longing for a home left behind.

Fremont, a Sundance film by director Babak Jalali, is a restless immigrant story that beautifully conveys the human desire for connection and a sense of longing for a home left behind. Fremont is an intimate, endearing, and melancholy picture of loneliness and people forgotten by the country they served. It was shot in stark black and white and frequently centres on the movie’s focus, Donya, who is played by Anaita Wali Zada in her screen debut.

Donya is a refugee who resides in a tiny Afghan neighbourhood in the Bay Area. She worked as an interpreter for US troops before fleeing to America with her family to escape the Taliban. Donya has little money, no insurance, no family, or friends despite working at a factory that neatly packages greetings into fortune cookies. Donya visits a psychiatrist to get prescription sleeping medications since her guilt keeps her awake at night (Gregg Turkington). They start a quest to unpack some of Donya’s enormous baggage when the doctor maintains he needs a few more sessions with her before prescribing. Jeremy Allen White from The Bear also appears in Fremont as Daniel, a mechanic with whom Donya develops a bond.

Jalali, Zada, and Turkington visited the Collider Studio in Park City after the Sundance premiere of Fremont. Zada describes how she went from working as a journalist in Afghanistan to having a major role in a Sundance film while speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. Jalali explains how the black-and-white technique was used, the way by which he and cinematographer Laura Valladao framed shots, and how the cast and crew made Fremont possible on an independent film budget and timeline. He also discusses the motivation for the story of Fremont. Turkington talks about his “erratic, weird” persona and praises his co-star Zada for their on-screen chemistry. You may view the interview in the video up top or scroll down to read the whole transcript.

Collider says: “The reason I get to be here today is to talk to the people behind Fremont, and I really want to give you congratulations and say how much I enjoyed your movie. Most people who are watching this interview right now will have not seen the film yet so how have you been describing it to friends and family?”

Babak Jalali says: “Thank you for having us here. To friends and family, to anyone, it’s a story about a young Afghan woman who used to work as a translator for the US military, and has recently moved to the Bay Area and lives in the city of Fremont, which is right outside San Francisco, and by day works in a Chinese fortune cookie factory. It’s about someone restarting their life, a stranger in a strange land.”

Anaita was asked, “Anaita, you have never made a film before, and I really want to know how you got involved in this, and what the experience was like being front and centre in a movie.”

Anaita says: “Thank you so much. Yes, that was my first time acting in a movie. First, I received an email from one of my friends, and I sent an email to Babak, and we had so many Zoom [calls]. After that we decided to work together. Actually, he decided to work with me [laughs].”

While laughing she says, “I was going to say, it was probably his decision.”

Zada says: “Yeah, exactly.

What was it like, the experience of making a movie compared to what you thought it would be?”

Zada continued: “I have to say, I worked as a journalist in Afghanistan for two years, so I had experience in front of [the] camera and microphone, so it was, for me, easy to be in front of cameras. But working with the cast and film crew and director was like the first time. I enjoyed it and I learned a lot from it, and also, from Daniel’s character.

You play an integral part in this film. Can you talk about who you play and what it was about this part that said, ‘I want to do this?'”

Gregg added: “Well, I play a doctor, a psychiatrist, who’s – I’ve heard somebody call him eccentric recently, which was maybe a kinder description than I’ve been using, what I’ve been telling people about it. But yeah, just an oddball psychiatrist. I guess one of these people that, probably, when he started in the profession was quite good, but has maybe gone to seed over the years.

Basically, when Babak reached out and I read the script, I was just excited to have been asked, you know, as opposed to like when I got the script to audition for the Elmer Fudd movie. No. But this, I mean it’s a beautiful, beautifully written script and it’s kind of a dream, really, to get something like that and be offered a role in it when the quality is glaring from the get-go.”

After a long talk Jalali added, “100%. One of the things that I appreciate is that, there are a lot of people who helped America in Afghanistan that have been brought over to America, and I don’t want to say that they’re forgotten about, but they’re forgotten about. Was that one of the reasons why you felt compelled to tell this story?”

‘Originally, when I heard about translators living in Fremont, that’s what drew my attention because of the way they were living. They had been forgotten about, neglected, and things like that. The original idea of doing a film about a translator stemmed from that, and I found it shocking, but the story sort of changed. The reality is that yes, there are people who risked their lives for America over there and once they came here, they were abandoned, which is something that’s often repeated in history.’

Zada in the end added: “Thank you so much. I just want to add a little thing. Don’t forget about Afghanistan, about the women of Afghanistan, stay with them, talk about them, remember them, and what’s going on there. They have lost their rights.”
