Israel intensifies assault on Gaza city, killing 78 across the enclave

Israel has escalated its military campaign in Gaza City, killing at least 78 Palestinians across the besieged enclave since dawn, according to Palestinian officials.

Among the victims were 32 individuals reportedly searching for food, amid what rights groups are calling a worsening humanitarian crisis.

On Sunday, shelling near al-Quds Hospital ignited fires in tents sheltering displaced families. According to the Palestinian Civil Defence, at least five people were killed and three injured after a residential apartment was struck in the Remal neighbourhood.

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, accused the Israeli military of deploying “explosive robots” in densely populated areas.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), al-Thawabta said that more than 80 such devices have been detonated in civilian neighborhoods over the past three weeks. He described the tactics as part of a “scorched-earth policy” that has razed homes and endangered lives.

“Despite the destruction and starvation caused by the Israeli assault, more than one million Palestinians in Gaza City and the north refuse to submit to the policy of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing,” he stated.

Footage shared on social media and verified by Al Jazeera captured the aftermath of an Israeli aerial strike in the Sabra neighbourhood in southern Gaza City. The video, posted by Palestinian journalist Faiz Osama, shows a child with a leg injury screaming in pain, while a man lies motionless nearby with an apparent head wound. Smoke can be seen rising from the rubble in the background.

The Israeli military has yet to comment on the latest claims, but previous statements have emphasized the goal of dismantling Hamas infrastructure in Gaza. However, growing international concern over civilian casualties and mass displacement has intensified calls for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access.

The current offensive follows nearly a year of conflict in Gaza, where over 38,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to local health authorities. Aid agencies warn that food, water, and medical supplies are nearing total depletion as bombardments continue.

Pakistan calls for ending women’s suffering in IIOJK, Palestine

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Reaffirming its strong commitment to advancing the gender perspective in UN peace operations, Pakistan has called for ending the suffering of women and girls under foreign occupation such as in Kashmir and Palestine.

“The most egregious violations against women and girls occur in situations of foreign occupation, since one of objectives of the occupation is the subjugation of the occupied population, among whom women and girls are the most vulnerable,” Ambassador Munir Akram told the UN Security Council.

“This is the case in occupied Jammu and Kashmir where in 1990, over 100,000 Kashmiri men, women and children were killed,” the Pakistan envoy said in a debate on ‘Women, Peace, and Security’.

In this regard, he called on the Security Council to address “the dire and unacceptable” situation of women and girls under foreign occupation.

Over 60 speakers took part in the day long debate, calling for women’s involvement in Peace Processes and participation in decision-making on equal footing with men.

On his part, Ambassador Akram said Pakistan was the first country to endorse the UN Secretary General’s Declaration of shared commitments which identified Women, Peace and Security as a central priority to strengthen UN peacekeeping, pointing out that the country’s political commitment was matched with practical steps in the field.

As an example, he said, Pakistan dispatched in 2019 its first all-female community engagement team to Africa, which undertook several successful initiatives including vocational training for local students, teachers and women. An increasing number of Pakistani women peacekeepers in recent years have served as doctors, nurses and police officers in some of the most challenging environments, with Shahzadi Gulfam, becoming the first-ever recipient of the International Female Police Peacekeeper Award in 2011.

At the same time, Ambassador Akram said the world continues to remain a very dangerous place, for women and girls, who often find themselves caught in the vortex of violence and suffering, caused by unending wars and protracted disputes in which they are extremely vulnerable to sexual violence.

Pakistan urges action on war crimes in Palestine and Kashmir

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan called on the world community “not to turn a blind eye” to the “war crimes” being committed in Palestine and occupied Kashmir, and underscored the need to eliminate impunity and secure justice for the victims of grave injustices.

“Crimes against humanity are among the most egregious violations of human rights, unsettling the very conscience of the international community,” Ambassador Usman Iqbal Jadoon, deputy permanent member of Pakistan to the UN, told the General Assembly’s Sixth (legal) Committee.

Speaking in a debate on Crimes against Humanity, he said Pakistan was “deeply concerned” about the ongoing cycle of occupation, oppression, and violence in Palestine.

“As we mark the dreadful one-year anniversary of Israel genocidal war against the Palestinian people, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen,” the Pakistani envoy said, highlighting that this tragic situation was a direct result of over seven decades of illegal Israeli occupation and disregard for international law, including General Assembly and UN Security Council resolutions affirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

“These inhumane actions by Israeli occupation forces are not only unacceptable but also constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity and a ‘plausible’ genocide as ruled by the International Court of Justice (ICJ),” the Pakistani envoy said.

In line with the recent General Assembly resolution on implementing the ICJ Advisory Opinion, he said, “Israel must Immediately and unconditionally withdraw from all occupied Palestinian territories; end its unlawful policies and make reparations for the damages; and ensure the Palestinians can exercise their right to self-determination. ”

In this context, Ambassador Jadoon said also underscored the necessity for global cooperation to eradicate impunity for culprits and to ascertain justice for victims.

While the International Law Commission’s draft articles and commentaries serve as crucial instruments for enhancing accountability by providing practical and insightful guidance to States, he emphasized that it was premature to establish any solid conclusions regarding their essence and layout.

“It is vital to ensure that the definitions outlined in the draft articles on the prevention and punishment of crimes against humanity — specifically for crimes such as enslavement, torture, and enforced disappearance – align with those enshrined in the corresponding United Nations conventions,” the Pakistani envoy said.
