Pakistan urges UN police’s engagement in improving peacekeeping operations

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Describing United Nations Police as a cornerstone of global peacekeeping, Pakistan has called for the inclusion of their perspectives in U.N.’s flagship activity that helps countries in conflict transition to peace.

“Their (UN Police) insights make a critical difference in improving peacekeeping operations,” Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, told UN Security Council which met to discuss UN support to conflict-affected countries.

“It is crucial that perspectives of the UN Police be included in decision-making on peacekeeping missions, including mission planning and resourcing.”

Ambassador Akram also underscored the need for realistic mandates to ensure the success of peacekeeping operations.

“In the situations, where a rapid deployment of Formed Police Units, instead of military, is necessary, the deployment should be based on clear and achievable mandates and supported by adequate resources,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy said that policing in peacekeeping operations needs to evolve in a way that is capable of addressing complex, non-traditional threats involving organized crime, human trafficking, terrorism and weaponization of technology.

In this regard, he emphasized the need for employing technology to enable the UN police to fulfill its mandate.

“The UN police must receive adequate training and capacity building and should integrate technology in its operations by using tools such as Generative Artificial Intelligence, virtual reality (VR) tools, drones, surveillance equipment, and data analytics.”

He said that there was also the imperative of prioritizing capacity building, institutional development and rebuilding local law enforcement structures of the host government, to ensure sustainable peace and stability, considering the crucial role of the UN Police in the post-conflict transitions.

As a longstanding contributor, he said Pakistan has deployed 50 Formed Police Units (FPUs) in UN peace operations across Haiti, Darfur, East Timor, and Ivory Coast.

Demonstrating unwavering dedication to public service and international peace, 11 Pakistani police personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, the Pakistani envoy said, adding that the current readiness of a Pakistani FPU on the Rapid Deployment Level (RDL) underscores the country’s preparedness for international peacekeeping efforts.

Pakistan urges extension of Gaza ceasefire to all occupied Palestinian lands

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called on the UN Security Council to take steps to end Israel’s aggression in the occupied West Bank, emphasizing that the 15-member body ensure that the ceasefire in Gaza extends beyond the war-shattered enclave to all occupied Palestinian territories.

“Peace cannot take root as long as Israel’s actions in the occupied West Bank continue with impunity,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, the alternative permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said after a briefing to the Council members by the top UN official for the Middle East Peace Process, Sigrid Kaag, on the situation in the restive region.

Over 50,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, with military raids, settler violence, and illegal land annexations intensifying daily, he said.

“These are not isolated incidents but part of a deliberate strategy to erase Palestinian identity from their own land– It is ethnic cleansing in real time,” the Pakistani envoy added.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s resolute support to the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that a sovereign, independent and contiguous State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, was not just a political necessity — it is a moral imperative.

“If we truly believe in the UN Charter principles, if we stand for justice, for the rule of law, for the fundamental right of all peoples to live in dignity – then we must act,” he said.

Earlier, Ms. Kaaq, the UN official in the region, urged Council members to ensure Gaza remains an integral part of a future Palestinian State, and that the enclave and the West Bank including East Jerusalem are unified politically, economically and administratively.

At the same time, she said there should be no long-term Israeli military presence in Gaza – although Israel’s security concerns must be addressed.

Pakistan calls for resolving Yemen conflict through dialogue

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for resolving the conflict in Yemen through diplomatic and political means, underscoring that diplomacy and dialogue remain the only viable paths for peace.

“Pakistan urges all parties to prioritize dialogue, engage in a Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political process, and resolve differences through peaceful means,” Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council.

“We fully support the UN and regional efforts, particularly by Saudi Arabia and Oman to reach a political settlement of the Yemeni conflict based on the agreed upon frameworks, ” he said during a debate on the situation in Yemen.

Ambassador Akram expressed Pakistan’s deep concern about the protracted conflict in Yemen, which has triggered a multi-dimensional crisis, including economic collapse, climate impacts and one of the worst humanitarian emergencies in modern history.

The crisis in Yemen, which worsened in 2014 after Houthi rebels (known officially as Ansar Allah) seized the capital, Sanaa, has been marked by complex political and military tensions. More than 17 million people – half the country’s population – remain dependent on humanitarian assistance and protection.

The Pakistani envoy also voiced deep concern over Houthi attacks on commercial and maritime vessels in the Red Sea, which he said threaten global trade, regional stability and the environment.

Also, during its proceedings, the 15-member Council adopted a resolution which reaffirmed its earlier call on the Houthis to cease all attacks on merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, and called for monitoring of the situation as these attacks continue with increasing sophistication.

Pakistan supported the resolution which was adopted by a vote of 12 in favour to none against — with 3 abstentions (Algeria, China, Russia).

Under its terms, the Council extended, until 15 July 2025, its request that the Secretary-General provide it with written monthly reports on Houthi attacks on merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

Syria has real opportunity to move from darkness to light: UN

Syria

UNITED NATIONS: Syrians have high expectations for their country, and a strong desire for people from across the social spectrum to come together and forge a new constitution.

At the same time, Najat Rochdi, the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, told UN News, a media website, that the process must begin with an inclusive “national dialogue.”

Ms. Rochdi is in Damascus meeting several members of the transitional authorities to ensure all Syrians are able to participate in the country future, which is struggling to cope with an acute humanitarian crisis and faltering economy, it was pointed out. It’s her second visit to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.

“The de facto authorities have shown, through their statements, a real willingness to take the country from where it was to something much better that meets the demands and aspirations of all Syrians,” she said.

“One expression that we hear in every meeting is that it is time to move from the darkness to the light. In that regard, we really welcome the decision to organize a national dialogue.

It’s very important that this dialogue factors in the voices of all Syrians, who have paid a very, very high price to get where they are today.”

Meanwhile, a team from the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria has concluded a first visit to the country, taking crucial steps to promote dialogue and engagement with the new caretaker government.

Commissioner Hanny Megally led the team, which met with officials, including in the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs.

Discussions covered justice for victims and families, the protection of mass graves and evidence, and continued engagement with the Commission, which was established by the UN Human Rights Council in August 2011.

Megally welcomed the willingness of the new authorities to continue engaging with the Commission on future visits.

This marks a significant shift as the former government had denied the Commission access since the start of its mandate.

UN predicts global economic growth to remain at 2.8% in 2025

UN

UNITED NATIONS: Global economic growth is projected at 2.8 per cent in 2025, unchanged from the past year, with prospects in South Asia remaining “robust”, according to a UN flagship report.

“South Asia’s economic outlook remains robust, with regional GDP anticipated to grow by 5.7 per cent in 2025, compared to 5.9 per cent in 2024, supported by strong performance in India and recovery in Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka,” the report produced by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) said.

However, it warned that risks to the outlook are tilted to the downside owing to deceleration in external demand, ongoing debt challenges, and social un-rests.

“Additionally, strong export growth in services and certain manufactured goods will bolster economic activity,” the World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2025 report said.

“Looming risks ahead East and South Asia face mounting downside risks that could dampen economic prospects. Key risks and challenges include escalating geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, and the impact of climate change, which could reignite inflationary pressures and pose severe risks to food security.”

Replying to a question, Hamid Rashid, the Chief of Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division at DESA, said that once the debt issues of Pakistan and Sri Lanka are resolved, their economies are set to grow further.

In this regard, the report calls for bold multilateral action to address interconnected global crises, including debt, inequality and climate change.

Globally, the report the shows that despite withstanding a series of mutually reinforcing shocks, world economic growth has stagnated and remains below the pre-pandemic annual average of 3.2 per cent.

It highlights the enduring impact of weak investment, sluggish productivity, and high debt levels on global economic performance.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his foreword, called for decisive action to address these challenges.

“Countries cannot ignore these perils. In our interconnected economy, shocks on one side of the world push up prices on the other. Every country is affected and must be part of the solution,” he stated.

Pakistan calls for representative governance in Syria to ensure unity

Pakistan

UITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for political inclusivity and representative governance in “fraternal” Syria following the overthrow of the Assad regime exactly a month ago, saying the process should be Syrian-led and Syrian-owned that is backed by the United Nations.

“Today, Syria is at an important juncture in its history,” Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council which debated the situation in that Arab country on Wednesday.

“The recent political developments offer the opportunity to restore normalcy, stability and peace in Syria,” he said, adding, “Yet this will depend on ensuring a peaceful transition to a new governance structure which is inclusive and stable and ensures Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.”

Earlier, Syria’s ambassador Koussay Aldahhak told the 15-member Council that the “dawn of freedom has broken”, and called on members of the UN to “respect the will of the Syrian people and its national choices.”

For this reason, he urged them to “immediately and fully lift unilateral coercive measures, to provide the necessary financing to meet humanitarian needs and recover basic services” and “to rehabilitate and reconstruct the damaged facilities and ensure demining.”

As the country is committed to improving conditions following 14 years of brutal conflict, the Syrian Ambassador called on the U.S. and other States to lift restrictive measures which targeted the previous regime.

Finally, he had a message for Israel in the Golan, “We stress the need to ensure that Israeli occupation entities do not take advantage of the current circumstances to violate Syria’s sovereignty in an attempt to impose a new reality through their military incursion to new parts of Syria,”

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan on Wednesday officially began its two-year term (2025-26) as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the world body’s power center.

“As a non-permanent member of the UNSC, Pakistan will play its active role in promoting the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, including the right to self-determination of peoples under foreign occupation,” Ambassador Munir Akram said in a post on X platform.

“We will work with other Council members to promote peace & security,” the top Pakistani envoy added.

A formal flag raising ceremony for the new members of the Council –Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia — will take place on January 2 (tomorrow) at the UN headquarters in New York.

The new members replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland whose terms ended on December 31, 2024.

Pakistan will also preside over the 15-member Council in July when it assumes its presidency according to alphabetical rotation of the member states’ official names. This will allow Islamabad to set the Security Council’s agenda.

In addition to this, Pakistan will get a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, which is responsible for designating individuals and groups as terrorists and imposing sanctions.

This is Pakistan’s eight term on the Council. The country’s previous terms on the UNSC were in 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993-94, 1983-84, 1976-77, 1968-69, and 1952-53.

Over the decades, Pakistan has played an active role in promoting the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and made significant contributions to international peace and security, including its role as one of the leading troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions across the world.

Pakistan, which was elected to the UN Security Council by the General Assembly in June 2024, has replaced Japan on the Asian seat.

UN urges Taliban to revoke ban on Afghan women working in NGOs

UN

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has told the Taliban to revoke a ban on Afghan women working in NGOs after the de facto government issued a circular warning international groups that they faced suspension and possible revocation of their license if they were found in violation of a decree first issued in 2022.

The measure, issued by the de facto Ministry of Economy on 26 December, enforces a two-year-old decree prohibiting women from working with both national and international NGOs.

In a statement, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rughts, emphasized the devastating impact on the delivery of critical humanitarian aid in Afghanistan the decree will have, where more than half the population lives in poverty.

NGOs, he noted, are essential to the survival of millions of Afghans, offering life-saving support to women, men and children alike.

“This is absolutely the wrong path,” Turk said, urging the de facto authorities to reconsider what he described as a “deeply discriminatory decree.”

Since coming to power, Afghanistan’s de facto authorities have restricted the rights of women and girls, barring them from education, work, healthcare, and movement.

These measures, including the latest crackdown on NGO employment, effectively erase women from public life, undermining Afghanistan’s prospects for progress.

The High Commissioner called on Afghanistan’s leaders to rethink their course, not just for the sake of women and girls but for the future of the nation as a whole.

He also highlighted the broader implications of these policies for the global community, noting that restricting women’s participation in public life exacerbates poverty and hampers efforts to build a stable and resilient society.
