PM says govt continuing its efforts to safeguard human rights

PM

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that the Government of Pakistan would continue its efforts to promote and safeguard human rights, both domestically and internationally.

He reiterated Pakistan’s unflinching resolve to further advance respect for and protection of the rights and freedoms of all our citizens as enshrined in the Constitution as well as in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to this cause, evident through various initiatives and policies aimed at protecting the dignity and rights of its citizens,” the caretaker prime minister said in a message on the occasion of International Human Rights Day being observed on December 10.

The prime minister said that this year’s theme “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All” was very apt and relevant. Pakistan joined the international community in commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

The historic declaration enshrined the inalienable rights to which all individuals were entitled – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The prime minister said that some key initiatives taken by the government of Pakistan included ratification of core human rights conventions, incorporation of fundamental rights in the constitution of Pakistan, enactment of human rights laws and establishment of institutions for prevention and protection of rights.

Special laws have been enacted for the protection of the rights of vulnerable population including women, children, minorities, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and transgenders, he added.

KU seminar discusses violation of human rights in Pakistan

KU
  • Human rights violations matter of concerns for all .
  • The burning of church in Jaranwala is a stark reality.
  • First sectarian violence took place in 1963 in Pakistan.

KARACHI: The human rights violations in Pakistan, particularly in relation to the recent burning of a church in Jaranwala, are a matter that concerns us all. Regardless of our geographical location or background, it is our duty as global citizens to advocate for justice and equality.

The burning of a church in Jaranwala last week is a stark reality of the urgent need to address human rights violations around the world. We must not remain silent in the face of such atrocities. We should stand together for justice, equality, and freedom of religious rights of citizens and monitories in Pakistan.

These views were expressed by the speakers at the one-day seminar entitled “Sectarian Violence: Violation of Human Rights held at University of Karachi.

Justice (Retired) Nazar Akbar said that minorities have equal rights in the constitution and law and complete protection of minorities can be ensured if we follow the constitution and law.

He informed the participants about the laws related to the rights of minorities in the Pakistani constitution and urged them to study the law and constitution so that they could know more about their rights.

Former MPA Sharmila Faruqui said that the first sectarian violence took place in 1963 in the country and we are talking about the same issue in 2023. She observed that as a nation we have not learned anything from the past.

She mentioned that after the establishment of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had said that everyone has religious freedom in Pakistan, but, unfortunately, it is not implemented to date.

Another speaker, Senator Shahadat Awan said that our country is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and we should follow the Qur’an and Sunnah. In 1963, the first sectarian violence happened in Khairpur, on which the Supreme Court gave a decision.

He mentioned that it is necessary to raise a voice against violence and human rights and we need to take practical steps to eradicate sectarian violence and violation of human rights from the country.

On this occasion, the former law minister Barrister Shahida Jameel said that in the last sermon of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), there was a message for Muslims that all are one race. What are we doing in the name of Islam? Are we not violating the last sermon of our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH)?

Renowned journalist Mazhar Abbas said that sectarian violence is also a violation of human rights. “Every citizen in Pakistan, regardless of whether he/she belongs to any school of thought, is in the minority or in the majority, has full freedom to live according to their religion.”

Top rights prize awarded to jailed Indian-occupied Kashmiri activist

Kashmiri
  • Martin Ennals Award is one of the world’s most prestigious human rights prizes.
  • Parvez is the founder of the widely respected Indian-occupied Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society.
  • The 45-year-old was inspired to become a nonviolent activist at the age of 13.

Jailed Kashmiri rights activist Khurram Parvez has won the Martin Ennals Award, one of the world’s most prestigious human rights prizes, along with two other campaigners from Chad and Venezuela, with the jury hailing their “courage”.

Delphine Djiraibe, one of Chad’s first female lawyers, and Feliciano Reyna, a rights activist, and advocate for LGBTQ people in Venezuela, are the other two award winners.

“The common denominator among the 2023 laureates… is their courage, passion, and determination to bring the voice of the voiceless to the international arena, despite ongoing, sometimes life-threatening, challenges,” prize jury chairman Hans Thoolen said in a statement on Thursday.

“We are particularly proud to honor these three exceptional laureates who have each dedicated over 30 years of their lives to building movements that brought about justice for victims or delivered medicines to the marginalized,” he said. “In their communities, they have made human rights a reality for thousands of people.”

However, Parvez, the founder of the widely respected Indian-occupied Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, will most likely be unable to attend the ceremony. Since November 2021, he has been detained by India under a strict “terrorism” law that effectively allows people to be held indefinitely without trial.

According to the prize organizers, the 45-year-old was inspired to become a nonviolent activist at the age of 13 after witnessing his grandfather being shot during a protest in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

Parvez was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in May.

Israel strike on Syria wounds two civilians: ministry

Israel strike
  • An Israeli air strike has hit poultry farms on Syria’s west coast, the defence ministry says.
  • Strikes also injured two civilians, including a woman, the ministry adds.
  • The Israeli army say they “do not comment on reports in the foreign media” Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against its northern neighbour.

The Syrian government’s heartland on the war-torn country’s west coast was hit by an air strike from Israel on Saturday, according to the defence ministry.

“The Israeli enemy carried out an air strike” after daybreak near the town of Al-Hamidiyah, the ministry said, identifying the locations hit as poultry farms, without elaborating.

The strike was carried out from the Mediterranean Sea, west of Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli, and “injured two civilians, including a woman,” according to a statement.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said the facility that was struck had formerly been used to keep farm animals but was now used by Lebanon’s Shiite militant movement Hezbollah, a Syrian government ally.

The Israeli army told AFP on Saturday that they “do not comment on reports in the foreign media”.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian of Iran, also a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, condemned the Israeli strike.

“With its attacks, the Zionist entity is trying to portray Damascus as an unsafe city to obstruct the return of displaced Syrians,” he said on Saturday during a visit to the Syrian capital.

Video footage by Syrian’s official news agency SANA showed rubble at what it said was the site of the targeted facility.

Iran executions more than double in first half of 2022: NGO

Iran
  • From January 1 to June 30, 251 people were hanged in Iran, compared to 117 in the first half of last year.
  • Iran has seen nationwide protests over economic grievances such as the rise in cost of basic staples including bread.
  • Eight prisoners were executed on rape and murder charges on Wednesday alone at the Rajai Shahr prison outside Tehran.

An NGO said Friday that executions in Iran have more than doubled in the first half of 2022, warning that the increase is intended to spread fear during a period of protests.

From January 1 to June 30, 251 people were hanged in Iran, compared to 117 in the first half of last year, according to a report by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had expressed concern last month over the rise in executions, with Iran again executing drug offenders in high numbers and many people from ethnic minorities.

Iran has over the last months seen nationwide protests over economic grievances such as the rise in cost of basic staples including bread.

“There is no doubt that spreading fear to counteract the growing popular anti-regime protests is the main goal of these executions,” IHR founder Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam told AFP.

“Only stronger international reactions and domestic campaigns against the executions can raise the political cost of these executions for the authorities and stop the increasing trend,” he said.

He noted that 137 executions had occurred since the new wave of protests began on May 7. Six women were also executed, according to IHR.

According to IHR, eight prisoners were executed on rape and murder charges on Wednesday alone at the Rajai Shahr prison outside Tehran.
