Dr Kaiser Bengali proposes Charter of Economy for Sindh

Bengali

KARACHI: The renowned economist Dr Kaiser Bengali proposed a Charter of Economy for Sindh during a lecture session at the Rangoonwala Conference Hall of the Applied Economics Research Centre of the University of Karachi.

The KU AERC has invited Dr Kaiser Bengali to highlight the real problems of social and economic problems of the provinces and how people can come out of the current situation.

He observed that governments should secure the household and macro-economies, and proper flood management in Sindh. He advised priorities should be given to regional and urban development and work on finding new resources.

According to him, the Roti, Kapra aur Makaan, sums up the basic aspiration of the people, so that ensuring food security is the foremost duty of the state and gives the idea that most essential food items like wheat, pulses, onions, cooking oil, vegetables, and spices, all must be grown in the province and shared that these items are capable of being grown in Sindh.

He said that there should be no dependence on essential food imports and mentioned that imports are subject to the rising cost of foreign exchange, contribute to food inflation, and also adversely impact the lower-income groups disproportionately.

Dr Kaiser Bengali advised that acreage must be fixed district-wise to produce the required quantities and said that a necessary incentive structure should be instituted to provide growers with reasonable returns.

He observed that sugarcane is a coastal crop and said that its cultivation should be permitted in coastal districts only like Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, and Hyderabad and mentioned that acreage released from sugarcane cultivation in all other districts which estimated at 200,000 hectares will become available for other essential crops.

He said that governments should ensure that people have a house, water supply, wastewater disposal, electricity and gas, and a clean, orderly neighborhood, besides providing employment opportunities as the overarching need for survival is employment.

He said that employment can easily be generated by commodity sectors of the economy, primarily agriculture, and industry.

KU seminar discusses violation of human rights in Pakistan

KU
  • Human rights violations matter of concerns for all .
  • The burning of church in Jaranwala is a stark reality.
  • First sectarian violence took place in 1963 in Pakistan.

KARACHI: The human rights violations in Pakistan, particularly in relation to the recent burning of a church in Jaranwala, are a matter that concerns us all. Regardless of our geographical location or background, it is our duty as global citizens to advocate for justice and equality.

The burning of a church in Jaranwala last week is a stark reality of the urgent need to address human rights violations around the world. We must not remain silent in the face of such atrocities. We should stand together for justice, equality, and freedom of religious rights of citizens and monitories in Pakistan.

These views were expressed by the speakers at the one-day seminar entitled “Sectarian Violence: Violation of Human Rights held at University of Karachi.

Justice (Retired) Nazar Akbar said that minorities have equal rights in the constitution and law and complete protection of minorities can be ensured if we follow the constitution and law.

He informed the participants about the laws related to the rights of minorities in the Pakistani constitution and urged them to study the law and constitution so that they could know more about their rights.

Former MPA Sharmila Faruqui said that the first sectarian violence took place in 1963 in the country and we are talking about the same issue in 2023. She observed that as a nation we have not learned anything from the past.

She mentioned that after the establishment of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had said that everyone has religious freedom in Pakistan, but, unfortunately, it is not implemented to date.

Another speaker, Senator Shahadat Awan said that our country is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and we should follow the Qur’an and Sunnah. In 1963, the first sectarian violence happened in Khairpur, on which the Supreme Court gave a decision.

He mentioned that it is necessary to raise a voice against violence and human rights and we need to take practical steps to eradicate sectarian violence and violation of human rights from the country.

On this occasion, the former law minister Barrister Shahida Jameel said that in the last sermon of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), there was a message for Muslims that all are one race. What are we doing in the name of Islam? Are we not violating the last sermon of our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH)?

Renowned journalist Mazhar Abbas said that sectarian violence is also a violation of human rights. “Every citizen in Pakistan, regardless of whether he/she belongs to any school of thought, is in the minority or in the majority, has full freedom to live according to their religion.”

KU Intl conference urges to address root causes of food insecurity

KU Intl
  • The event is being funded by the HEC Sindh.
  • Global climate changes are a nuisance to agricultural.
  • Pakistan are a testament to the destructive impacts of climate.

KARACHI: Dr Mohammad Ajmal Khan Institute of Sustainable Halophyte Utilization of the University of Karachi in collaboration with Salim Habib University and the Nuclear Institute of Agriculture, Tandojam organized a three-day international conference on saline resource management in the context of global climate changes at the local hotel.

The event is being funded by the Sindh Higher Education Commission, and aimed of the conference is to gather people working in plant sciences, environmentalists, crop breeders, microbiologists, biochemists, and biotechnologists to discuss the issues and their possible outcomes.

During the inaugural session, the KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, and the Vice Chancellor, Salim Habib University Prof Dr Shakeel Ahmad Khan, spoke about the importance of saline resource management with particular reference to global climate change.

The experts mentioned that global climate changes are a nuisance to agricultural productivity, threatening food security and damaging life and property. Destructive impacts of climate change include increasing drought in some areas, water logging, and salinity. Multiple stress factors are continuously depleting our natural resources which require building capacity for crop production and livestock, overcoming pests and diseases, and fighting against natural calamities that are a challenge to food security.

They observed that developing countries like Pakistan are a testament to the destructive impacts of climate on low-income populations that have further aggravated the situation. The conventional methods to deal with such problems have proven to be short-lived and expensive, there was a long-felt need to find sustainable alternatives and out-of-the-box solutions. Therefore, this international conference was organized to find sustainable solutions.

Professor John Chessman, from Illinois, USA during his keynote address, outlined the element of food security and stressed that food is the sovereign right of people.

“Due to climate change food security is compromised. For growing high-yielding varieties, we have to look for wild crops, land races, and alternative plant species to provide food which could be edible, for example, the use of halophytes.”

Dr Hasan-Uz-Zaman from Dhaka University, Bangladesh, talked about the role of different kinds of biostimulants in enhancing salt tolerance in plants with a considerable promise to increase the yield of crops.

Diabetes is spreading in Pakistan at alarming rate: Experts

Diabetes is
  • Pakistan is the third country in terms of the number.
  • Pakistan ranks ninth in the world in terms of obesity.
  • The number of diabetic patients in Pakistan is 33 million.

KARACHI: Pakistan is the third country around the globe in terms of the number of people having diabetes, while it ranks first in the prevalence of diabetes.

In Pakistan, the number of people suffering from type 1 diabetes is very less, but unfortunately, there are a large number of type 2 diabetes patients in the country and it is being spread rapidly which is a matter of concern.

One of the main causes of diabetes in our society is obesity. Pakistan ranks ninth in the world in terms of obesity. Currently, the number of diabetic patients in Pakistan is 33 million, while health experts fear that the actual number of diabetic patients has increased during the last couple of years. There is no doubt that diabetes is spreading in the country at an alarming rate and people are still not taking it seriously.

These views were expressed by the renowned diabetes expert Dr Zahid Mian. He was addressing a seminar “Discovering Diabetes” organized by the University of Karachi at the Arts Auditorium.

The KU and Discovering Diabetesarranged a walk from Pharmacy Chowk to Admin Block. A large number of students, teachers, and employees participated in the awareness walk.

Dr Zhaid Mian informed the audience that every six seconds at least two people are suffering from diabetes in the world. He mentioned that health problems are increasing due to unhealthy lifestyles in Pakistan in general and in Karachi particularly. The rate of exercise among young people in the city of Karachi is the lowest in the world. He noted that Karachi does not have safe places for walking and exercise and people are also fond of eating junk foods and heavy meal intake.

Meanwhile, KU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that as a nation we need to move away from myths and adopt realism. “If the rate of diabetes continues to increase rapidly and we do not take serious measures to prevent this disease and failed to change our lifestyle, Pakistan will be at the top of the list of countries with diabetes.”

Syed Jamshed Ahmed said a large number of young people are diagnosed with diabetes which is a very alarming situation.
