KU seminar shed light on Israeli-Palestinian war conflict

KU

KARACHI:  Department of International Relations of the University of Karachi organized and hosted its 6th seminar under the Sheikh Mutahir Ahmed Lecture Series.

The event, titled, The Middle East Crisis, and held at the KU’s Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium. The IR scholars and experts enlightened the audience with insightful knowledge and first-hand information from the speakers.

The theme of the seminar encompassed the war zone “Gaza” and also the neighboring areas of the occupied land of Palestine.

The speakers spoke about the historic Israeli-Palestinian conflict, its present shape, and the current Iranian strikes on Israel and the repercussions it may have in the region and elsewhere.

The former Ambassador Dr. Jamil Ahmed shed light upon the Israeli ideology of genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.

He engaged the audience to reflect on Israel’s involvement in the Palestinian lands. He emphasized that majorly, diplomacy works as a weapon to end wars.

He said that the world wars ended with treaties which itself is proof of the role that diplomacy plays.

Jamil Ahmed referred to the historic meeting of 1897 in Switzerland, where the idea of a Zionist Movement and Greater Israel first emerged. He also explained how the Israeli agendas and political participation in international politics influence decisions and actions worldwide.

Another speaker, Air Commodore (Retd) Jamal Hussain, who is a defense analyst, spoke about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict concerning Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. He pointed out that the military and political objectives of Israel have compelled her to initiate and stay in the war for about a year now.

Jamal Hussain added some technicalities depicting his expertise in the area of war studies that Israel’s air war capabilities do not very well pay off. This, he mentioned, is because Palestinians (Hammas and Hezbollah) possess greater capabilities and practices of conventional warfare (ground operations) than Israel fails to possess.

A renowned journalist Tariq Abul Hassan, known for his news coverage and first-hand information from the conflict zones, also enlightened the participants of the conference with his experiences while covering the Israeli-Palestinian war.

He expressed that unfortunately, today’s teachers do not have enough time to build the character of their students and also not guiding them about their future. He observed that a society respects you when you contribute to the welfare of a society. There is also a lack of home-based training in respect of teachers in the present age.

On this occasion, Unikarians International President Professor Ejaz Ahmed Faruqi said that it is our responsibility to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our teachers, both parents and teachers are happy to see their child’s growth and progress more than their own. “We have seen a lot of changes in our daily lives but no one has been able to change the position of the teacher to date.”

Experts call for creating awareness about protecting ozone layer

Experts

KARACHI:  Every person in society should know the importance of a clean and healthy environment and its effect on human life and all living things, and they must play their role in improving the environment in our surroundings.

We need to create awareness among the masses about the need to protect the ozone layer and the environment for the future of our generations.

Unfortunately, schools, colleges, and even universities are not educating students about social values and norms whereas in the west students regardless of what they are studying get proper information and teach about the importance of social aspects and the role of individuals for the betterment of society.

We have to give topmost priorities to the social interests and civic issues of a society over the political benefits else we will never be able to progress in the right direction. These views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.

He was addressing the seminar organized by the KU Landscape and Gardening Council in collaboration with the KU’s Institute of Environmental Studies on the World Ozone Day under the theme of ‘Ozone for Life, Plant More Trees, Reduce Air Conditioners’ at the IES.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated every year on September 16, and it was designed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Dr Iraqi mentioned that clean drinking water is essential for a healthy life because it cures many diseases but ironically a large number of people in the country do not have access to clean drinking water.

On this occasion, an environmentalist Syed Mosuf Ali gave a detailed presentation on the importance of ozone and its impact on environmental pollution, saying that the loss of sunlight to the earth is due to the emission of chlorofluorocarbons from greenhouse gases.

Meanwhile, Karachi University Pharmacy Science Club arranged its first science fair at the new building of the faculty of pharmacy.

KU symposium on Mpox focuses on creating mass awareness

KU symposium

KARACHI:  With the population burst and climate change, the world is facing serious challenges of viral epidemics. Only knowledge-based progress can lead us out of these challenges.

These views were expressed by Dow University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Saeed Quraishy on Wednesday.

He was addressing the symposium on Mpox: evolution and clinical manifestation, jointly organized by the Department of Microbiology of the University of Karachi and the Association of Microbial Sciences at the KU’s Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.

The DUHS VC Prof Dr Saeed Quraishy stressed to students to create mass awareness and to take maximum benefit of this symposium. He mentioned that mass awareness can help us resolve such large challenges faced by the health sector.

He informed the audience that the very first case of Mpox was reported some 50 years ago, however, the recent surge in the cases indicates a threat to the emergence of new viral diseases.

Another speaker, the Principal of the Dow College of Biotechnology Prof Dr Mushtaq Hussain explained the evolution of viruses in general and Mpox virus in particular. He said that the high mutation rate coupled with the high mortality rate of Mpox virus highlighted the possible serious threats.

He reminded the recent cases of the lumpy pox virus were also due to the mutation in the pox virus which is a relevant virus to the Mpox virus.

He mentioned that the updated viral genome database presents the evolution of clade I virus which is more virulent and prone to mutations.

A speaker consultant on infectious diseases at the DUHS Dr Muniba Ahsan provided details about Mpox viral transmission and pathogenesis.

She mentioned the presence of clade II virus in the cases of Mpox reported from Pakistan which is a sigh of relief as this virus of this type has less mutation ability, virulence, and death rate.

“There shouldn’t be any havoc or rumors in this regard. Since Mpox is only transmitted from humans, either through contact or fomites, therefore, the patients of skin diseases should be diagnosed based on their past exposure.”

KU seminar highlights importance of presence of mangroves

KU

KARACHI: Muhammad Ajmal Khan Institute of Sustainable Halophyte Utilization of the University of Karachi organized a one-day seminar on the importance of mangrove conservation in commemoration of World Mangroves Day in collaboration with the KU Institute of Environmental Studies and Sindh government’s Forest Department at the KU MAK-ISHU Conference Hall.

The Chief Conservator of the Sindh government’s Forest Department Riaz Ahmed Wagan informed the audience that the provincial government is working hard for the restoration of mangroves across the coastline as they are essential for coastal resilience and facing serious challenges due to the diversion of water and silt, over-exploitation and heavy grazing.

He shared that the Indus Delta is located in Thatta, Sujawal, Badin and Karachi districts. He mentioned that early records show the existence of eight species of mangroves, but, presently, only four are found i.e. Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Ceriops tagal.

The chief guest, Riaz Wagan expressed that mangroves also have economic importance as according to the World Bank 2022 report, the value of one hectare of well-stocked mangrove forest area is US$ 58,000, and the overall asset value of mangroves of the Indus Delta is approximately US$ 1, 22, 00 million by way of supporting fish and shrimp breeding, timber, tourism, habitat provision to wild life,  grazing ground for the livestock of locals, besides provisioning services, global climate regulation (carbon sequestration and retention), soil (and sediment) erosion control, coastal protection, solid waste remediation, soil erosion control, and recreation and education related services.

He shared that shortage of fresh water and silt depositions from the River Indus, enhanced deltic salinity levels, increased rate of coastal erosion, sea-intrusion in fertile areas, industrial and municipal pollution result in the death of young seedlings and associated marine life. Cutting of mangroves for fuel, fodder, and grazing are also some direct threats to the mangroves.

KU seminar urges gender equality in society

KU

KARACHI: The role of educated mothers is very essential for the development of societies, a knowledgeable mother can easily educate and train her children in a good way, and the home environment they created can guarantee a well-educated and well-behaved family.

They maintain houses in order and have a major influence on a child, their love and care can mold them into a caring person or spoil their personality. We can witness that there is a lack of counseling, guidance, and training in the parental system in our society and its effects in front of us.

These views were expressed by the Director General of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, Dr Nauman Ahsan.

He was addressing the inaugural session of the seminar organized by the Center of Excellence for Women’s Studies of the University of Karachi in collaboration with the KU Faculty of Law, KU Students’ Advisor Office, KU Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization, and Sindh Higher Education Commission in connection with the International Women’s Day 2024.

KU moot calls for raising awareness of rare diseases

KU moot

KARACHI: Mental health and behavioral health disorders impose a significant and under-recognized burden on the global healthcare system, affecting social needs basic human rights, and the economy.

Between a quarter and a half of the global population is affected by a mental disorder at some point in life. Today, nearly one billion people live with a mental disorder, and in low-income countries, more than 75 percent of people with the disorder do not receive treatment.

Every year, close to three million people die due to substance abuse. The human cost is immense as around 800,000 people commit suicide every year, and that is a leading cause of death among young people.

These views were expressed by the renowned psychiatrist and meritorious Prof Dr Iqbal Afridi during his address at the Rare Disease Day 2024 organized by the Dr A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering of the University of Karachi at its Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium on Thursday.

He informed the audience that about 50 percent of mental health disorders start by the age of 14. People suffering from untreated mental health disorders are unable to realize their desired potential and are all too often exposed to a wide range of human rights violations.

“Between 2011 and 2030, the cumulative economic output loss associated with mental disorders is projected to be US$16.3 trillion worldwide.”

Dr Iqbal Afridi shared that given the chronic nature of the disease, this translates into a significant economic impact worldwide. It is expected that in the next 10 years, depression will put more burden on nations than any other disease.

He quoted that according to the World Health Organization, the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted or, in some cases, halted critical mental health services in the 93 percent of countries worldwide, while the demand for mental health is increasing.

Meanwhile, the KU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that based on data worldwide, there is no doubt that rare diseases are increasing around the globe.

Dr Afsheen Ali from KU KIGBE shared that the primary goal of this campaign is to increase awareness among the public and decision-makers about the rare disease and its influence on the lives of families living with these conditions.

KU conference highlights problems in Pakistani political culture

KU

KARACHI: Everyone is aware of the problems of the Pakistani political system and culture, and there is a need for civil society to come forward and help the government in making a comprehensive policy on the country’s problems. The universities should also engage in this process to get better results.

Pakistan is a multicultural economy with a lot of diversity but unfortunately, we are not rectifying our old mistakes and this is one of the major causes of our problems. Our political system is weak because our social system has not been strengthened during the last seven decades and we also lack in maintaining social and moral values. We can overcome these problems by filling the deficiency with devotion and dedication.

These views were expressed by the Chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission Prof Dr S.M. Tariq Rafi (TI) during the inaugural session of the first day of the two-day-long international conference on the transformation of ideas in Pakistan’s political culture.

The event was jointly organized by the Department of Political Science of the University of Karachi and the Institute of Business Management at the KU Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.

He said that universities are hubs of enhancing the skills, learning process, and mindsets of youngsters and they, directly and indirectly, learn a lot from their faculty members, that’s why it is very important that our teachers should make themselves available to students to listen to their problems and try their best to solve it, besides teaching them in a best possible way.

Chairman Sindh HEC Prof Dr Tariq Rafi, who was the chief guest of the conference, expressed that our universities should also initiate intra-province exchange programs for the students so that they can learn from the experiences of students and faculty of other provinces as well.

He shared that it was good to see that a leading public-sector university and a prominent private-sector university have joined hands and shared information among the masses.

Fauzia Viqar mentioned that working women mostly face harassment during the initial stage of their professional career, or working in junior positions, or at the time of joining organizations.
