KU seminar urges gender equality in society

KARACHI: The role of educated mothers is very essential for the development of societies, a knowledgeable mother can easily educate and train her children in a good way, and the home environment they created can guarantee a well-educated and well-behaved family.

They maintain houses in order and have a major influence on a child, their love and care can mold them into a caring person or spoil their personality. We can witness that there is a lack of counseling, guidance, and training in the parental system in our society and its effects in front of us.

These views were expressed by the Director General of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, Dr Nauman Ahsan.

He was addressing the inaugural session of the seminar organized by the Center of Excellence for Women’s Studies of the University of Karachi in collaboration with the KU Faculty of Law, KU Students’ Advisor Office, KU Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization, and Sindh Higher Education Commission in connection with the International Women’s Day 2024.

The KU CEWS’s seminar titled “Dukhtaran-e-Pakistan: Accelerating Gender Equality, Economic Empowerment and Peace Building and Perception Management” was held at the Karachi University.

Dr Nauman Ahsan shared that as Pakistanis we all break each and every rule and regulation but as soon as we land on the soil of any other country we are willing to obey and follow their rules without any hesitation.

“We will not stand in queues, and do not mind if we drive the wrong way on the streets in our motherland, but we cannot do the same in any foreign country, as we know what kind of reaction and punishment we will get there.”

During his presidential address, the KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that countries cannot be developed without promoting gender equality and empowering women.

He mentioned that the money spent on the education system is not an expense but an investment for our future, and added that without quality education we cannot achieve our goals.

IP Rights big issue in academia and research: Tariq Rafi

KARACHI: Chairman of Sindh Higher Education Commission(SHEC) Prof Dr S. M. Tariq Rafi said provincial HEC is taking steps to bring academia and the business community closer so that our universities do not lose talent and their products can be safeguarded through IP Rights.

The Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization of the University of Karachi organized a two-day long workshop for the faculty capacity building on IP Rights at the KU Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.

The chief guest of the inaugural session of the first day of the workshop, the Chairman of Sindh Higher Education Commission, Professor Dr S. M. Tariq Rafi during his address mentioned that he believes this workshop would help create awareness among the faculty members and scholars that Intellectual Property (IP) Rights will give legal protection to research work of our teachers, scholars, and researchers. He asked them to learn more about IP Rights, its responsibilities, prospects, and challenges in detail.

Chairman Sindh HEC Prof Dr Tariq Rafi shared that unfortunately, Pakistan is one of the countries where copyrights are not followed according to international standards, and IP Rights are a big issue in academia and research.

“We are providing all possible support to teachers and researchers to carry out their research and register creative works under IP Rights. There is a need to further legislate on it.”

He informed the audience that the country is producing the best IT experts but still, we are lagging in the IT industry and export at the global level and one of the major reasons is that we have a huge gap between academia and industries.

Meanwhile, the KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that the KU is one of the universities which have taken field experts on boards at the department level and making necessary changes in their curriculum after getting inputs from the relevant industry.

Chairman SHEC inaugurates digital research lab at KU

KARACHI: The Chairman Sindh Higher Education Commission Prof Dr S. M. Tariq Rafi inaugurated Asma Basher Digital Research Lab at the department of public administration of the University of Karachi.

The digital research lab has been established with the collaboration of a Chase Up departmental store to provide dedicated facilities to the students enrolled in MPhil, MS, and PhD programs in the KU DPA.

The Chairman SHEC Prof Dr Tariq Rafi while addressing the lab’s inaugural ceremony informed the audience that the provincial HEC is providing full support so that the international ranking of our universities could be improved globally.

He shared that the provincial government had increased the allocated budget of the SHEC to Rs24 billion per annum to facilitate varsities of Sindh. He believed that governments should not interfere in the matters of the universities and should give more autonomous status and power to the higher education institutes of the province.

He said that number of problems have occurred due to intervention from the government which could be resolved if governments stop interfering in varsities matters.

Dr Tariq Rafi advised that universities should adopt the self-accountability approach and work hard to improve their international ranking. He further said that to improve the ranking of universities, we have to pay special attention to the teaching and research quality, and hoped that it would help in improving the global ranking of our universities.

He mentioned that SHEC has drafted a formula, after considering numerous elements and requirements and keeping various factors in mind, to distribute funds and grants to universities in Sindh.

Chairman SHEC ProDr Tariq Rafi observed that a positive change can be brought in society only through positive thinking and its promotion. He mentioned that today getting a job is become difficult, and added that skilled and talented people achieve their goals as they are more dedicated as compared to others.

He advised that youngsters should not be disappointed, but should have the courage to do something and achieve something. He called the cooperation of universities and industries as the need of the hour and valuable for society.
