Experts calls for reforms to fix Pakistan’s energy sector

Experts

KARACHI:  Experts have called for institutional reforms to address excess power demand, rising electricity prices, and the influx of redistributed solar energy.

They called for effective policies to ensure affordability, efficiency and sustainability in the power sector to address energy crisis and environmental challenges.

This was discussed during a webinar titled, “Future of Pakistan’s Energy Sector” organized by Mehfooz Pakistan, a safety organization, to discuss the challenges faced by the power sector, hosted by current affairs commentator Zarrar Khuhro.

Faseeh Mangi, Pakistan Bureau Chief at Bloomberg, said the price of electricity has increased drastically in past few years even more than monthly rents. He is energy sector is the backbone of the economy which needs to be fixed with key reforms.

Faseeh Mangi said consumers are moving away to solar power particularly in rural areas due to reliability and affordability which is bringing changes in agriculture.

Energy Economist, Dr Asher Awan, highlighted the history of the power sector in Pakistan which led to the current situation. He reminded how a rural electrification programme was initiated in 1974 which continued till 1980 until the government was unable to meet the exceeding demand.

He added in the early 90s, there were growing calls to allow private investments in the energy sector which were successfully due to lucrative offers.

By 1994, Pakistan required institutional reforms and reorganized WAPDA by 1998, separating power generation and distribution.

He said the mismanagement started soon after and the power sector didn’t perform from 1998 to 2005.

Dr Awan said the World Bank reforms agenda called for reducing government interference to achieve energy sector regulation, and allowing the market forces to determine prices.

However, he said this was not achieved due to political and socio-economic reasons which created the circular debt crisis that has reached a staggering Rs6 trillion.

Ms Haneea Isaad, Energy Finance Analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), said Pakistan has a rigid power purchase contract model that has not evolved since the past two decades.

Regarding the issues of Independent Power Plants (IPPs), she said the government signed lucrative deals but required due diligence as they were signed for 25-30 years.

Experts call for creating awareness about protecting ozone layer

Experts

KARACHI:  Every person in society should know the importance of a clean and healthy environment and its effect on human life and all living things, and they must play their role in improving the environment in our surroundings.

We need to create awareness among the masses about the need to protect the ozone layer and the environment for the future of our generations.

Unfortunately, schools, colleges, and even universities are not educating students about social values and norms whereas in the west students regardless of what they are studying get proper information and teach about the importance of social aspects and the role of individuals for the betterment of society.

We have to give topmost priorities to the social interests and civic issues of a society over the political benefits else we will never be able to progress in the right direction. These views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.

He was addressing the seminar organized by the KU Landscape and Gardening Council in collaboration with the KU’s Institute of Environmental Studies on the World Ozone Day under the theme of ‘Ozone for Life, Plant More Trees, Reduce Air Conditioners’ at the IES.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated every year on September 16, and it was designed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Dr Iraqi mentioned that clean drinking water is essential for a healthy life because it cures many diseases but ironically a large number of people in the country do not have access to clean drinking water.

On this occasion, an environmentalist Syed Mosuf Ali gave a detailed presentation on the importance of ozone and its impact on environmental pollution, saying that the loss of sunlight to the earth is due to the emission of chlorofluorocarbons from greenhouse gases.

Meanwhile, Karachi University Pharmacy Science Club arranged its first science fair at the new building of the faculty of pharmacy.

According to a royal expert, ‘things are not well’ with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

According to a royal analyst, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent public appearances appear to indicate that all is not well in the Sussex camp.

The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden recently commented on Harry and Meghan’s regular appearances at polo tournaments, implying that the pair may be in difficulty with their multi-million-dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify.

Eden commented: “I do sense there’s a bit of trouble there really. It’s very curious all these photos of Meghan getting involved with all these polo events.”

He continued: “I remember writing about the polo back in Britain years ago that Meghan wasn’t very keen for Harry to play in polo matches unless it could be guaranteed that it would raise £1million for charity each time.”

“She felt that it was kind of beneath him to be playing in matches that would just make a few thousand pounds when he should be going for the big-ticket matches. But here he is, playing polo every week, and we’ve got Meghan turning up at all these events, handing over trophies, the same way she turned up at the Invictus Games,” he explained.

“To me, that’s an indication that all’s not well.”

Eden also said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seem to be ‘scrambling’ to maintain their star status, adding: “They have had to cope with changing plans, they put a lot of effort into developing Pearl. They invested a lot of hope in that. A lot seems in flux, like Harry’s memoir as well.”

Experts feel Johnny Depp has already won

Johnny depp

According to analysts, Johnny Depp is gaining more support and coming out on top in the court of public opinion, which might be more crucial than whether he wins his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

“I think [Johnny Depp] has won based on his notion of victory when he went off the stand,” Texas civil attorney Katherine Lizardo said.

“Because he had already won the court of public opinion… once he shared his narrative.”

During the second week of the trial in Fairfax, Virginia, the Pirates of the Caribbean testified for four days — and then again for more than three hours on Wednesday. The 58-year-old has publicly stated his case, and legal and public relations experts told The Washington Post that a jury verdict in his favour isn’t as important.

“I think winning the legal side of the defamation action doesn’t matter to Johnny Depp,” Lizardo told The Post. “Winning would be frosting on the cake for him because the major reason he filed the defamation action was to clean his name and appeal to the court of public opinion.”

“Right now, I believe it is unarguable that the court of public opinion favours him, has heard him, and is now backing him.” “Whether he wins or loses, I don’t think it matters to him or the court of public opinion,” Lizardo added.

According to Mitra Ahouraian, a California entertainment lawyer, the action isn’t really about winning a defamation claim, but about cleaning Depp’s name in the public domain, as he has said.

“This litigation is about leveraging the courts to present his side of the story, clarifying the record, and shaping the court of public opinion,” Ahouraian explained.

“It’s more significant than the litigation itself,” Ahouraian stated. “Winning the case would certainly assist because it would demonstrate that anything false was stated about him, which is a major matter.”

Depp’s legal team made certain to address Heard’s charges against him square on, providing his take on what occurred.

“He went into this expecting that everything would come out,” Ahouraian added. “‘Fine, I take drugs, and I’ve struggled with addiction since I was a kid, but I’m not a wife beater.’ And that is all he is attempting to express.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton are through a “monumental shift” and “coming of age”

Prince William

Experts warn that Prince William and Kate Middleton are going through a “coming of age” period.

The Sun’s former royal editor, Duncan Larcombe made this claim fairly recently.

He got candid during the latest episode of The Royal Beat and was quoted saying, “Since they celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary last year, we’ve seen a transition of this couple. [They] make no mistake, it’s been a monumental transition.”

“They’ve swapped their waxed jackets and walks with their dogs for tiaras, ballgowns and velvet with walks down the red carpet with Tom Cruise.”

“So this is about that coming of age, you know, we’ve seen Prince Charles and now we are seeing this couple, the Prince and Princess of Wales in-waiting.”
