Pakistan observing Indian state terrorism against Kashmiris: PM

Pakistan

MUZAFFARABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar  said India was the only terrorist in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan was closely watching its state terrorism against the Kashmiris.

Addressing the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on the occasion of Kashmir Solidarity Day, the prime minister said for last many years, India was presenting fake narrative and trying to weaken the struggle of local Kashmiris by wrongly labeling them as terrorists.

He said there was a clear difference of terrorism and the people’s struggle for independence. He said the Indian leadership was also claiming Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. “On this day, I want to make it clear that we believe in peace in the region and we are showing maximum patience and tolerance and peace,” he said.

The prime minister said Pakistan did not want any conflict in the region, however he made it clear that the country was fully capable of strongly retaliating any attack from the neighborly country. In this regard, he said India had for many times checked our capacity. “If it (India) has any desire to check Pakistan’s capacity again, then we are ready to show our strength.”

He said if India was a true democracy, it should give the people of Kashmir their just demand of right to self determination while it should also fully restore the basic human rights in IIOJK.

He said it should also abrogate all the strict emergency laws while it should also recall its heavy military presence from the villages and towns of Kashmir. It should allow the people to hold peaceful gatherings in Kashmir and it should also allow the people of Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination.

The prime minister said that India must allow unrestricted access to the UN and OIC observers, international media and human rights organizations to IIOJK to obtain first-hand information about the situation there; and investigate and report human rights violations.

He said that India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 in IIOJK were a blatant violation of international law including the UN Charter, 4th Geneva Convention and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

PM underlines need for effective criminal justice system

PM

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said that under the constitution, only parliament was mandated to legislate and stressed further reforms in the criminal justice system.

He opined that the conviction rate under the contemporary criminal justice system was very low, reflecting deficiencies and efforts to be made to plug the loopholes through effective legislation.

To a question about terrorist groups in Balochistan province, the prime minister said that non-state actors had no right to unleash violence and the State had the responsibility to counter such terrorist acts.

About 90,000 people in the country had lost their lives in waves of terrorism, he said, adding whether it was not the onus of political parties and the parliamentarians to improve upon the criminal justice system to expedite the conviction rate!

The prime minister maintained that he was speaking about the whole justice system, especially its lower tiers.

Elaborating his viewpoint, he said that Baloch, Pashtuns and different settlers had been living in Balochistan for decades.

There was no political uniform group while one minority armed group was carrying out violent activities, he said, adding that the US State Department, the UK, EU, and all other democratic countries had declared these groups as terrorists, he added.

The prime minister said that he did not differentiate between banned TPP and Ahrar and BLA and BLF, as these terrorist outfits had been using violence as a tool to create terror and kill innocent people.

In their terrorist attacks, about 1038 people had been martyred since 2018 in the province, he said, and cited incidents of Coastal Highway and an attack on Turbat police station in which innocent people had been killed and burnt alive.

On the other hand, he said the political protests and approach were acknowledged by the world, intelligentsia, and media.

To a query, Prime Minister Kakar said that the Middle East was a complex challenge. Pakistan had conveyed to different world fora and the international community that the continuation of the situation in Gaza was unacceptable, he added.

He said that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Arab League and the entire world was speaking about the two-state solution.

The prime minister, in an interview said the candidates were canvassing and all the rumours would fall to rest by the evening of February 8 – the date for general elections in the country.

He said the observers would monitor and local and international media would report on the activity, assuring that as per the standards in the region, the elections would by and large be free and fair.

He observed that the political parties were also involved in the poll rigging by making fake ID cards and casting the votes of deceased persons.

He said voting time would be from 9 am to 5 pm on February 8 and everyone should use his constitutional right to vote to ensure a good turnout. Emphasising the key focus on the improvement of the national economy, he said unfortunately no political party had yet come up with an agenda to boost the country’s economic health.

He said all the electoral claims made by the parties including jobs, shelters, cheap electricity, food security, and others were directly related to a stable economy. He said the political parties needed to come up with a plan for revenue generation and widen the tax net.

Exemplifying a 91% tax-to-GDP ratio in the Scandinavian countries, he said Pakistan’s ratio stood at just 9%, adding that enhanced taxation would also make the government accountable to the masses.

He also mentioned attending the BRI Forum in China, the ECO Summit, and the COP28 session where he got the opportunity to interact with world leaders and sign bilateral agreements.

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said that the nation should not have any doubts about the general elections scheduled to be held on February 8, 2024.

“I have no doubt about it… The concerns are often associated with our political system. We have a history of our own,” he remarked in an interview with Independent Urdu.

The prime minister expressed the hope that the elections would be held free and fair. To a question, he said he did not consider the general elections of the 70s as a benchmark either as many people had different opinions about those elections. “Of course, they were very transparent. At that time, it was already decided before the elections which way they would go to, so I consider it a problem,” he added.

He said as the arrangements were in place, he was hopeful that the caretaker government would be able to give results in a relatively better way. The prime minister said that he endorsed the Election Commission’s denial of the any delay in the polls . “They (Election Commission) have to conduct (elections). We are with them.” He said as per Election Commission, the election schedule will cover 56 days, based on which the schedule should be announced by December 14.

To a question about the participation of Imran Khan or his party in the general elections, he that there was no restriction on him yet. “However, if something unusual comes up, I can’t say anything about it yet. As of today, they are in a position to contest elections and they will contest.” About the disappearances and resurfacing of PTI leaders, the prime minister said such people went into hiding fearing the arrest for their involvement in attacks on state institutions on May 9.

He said while in hiding, they would have a second thought to leave PTI or politics which was their personal decision. He said that no evidence of ‘state coercion’ had come to his knowledge, and even none of those people had spoken of ‘state coercion’. Until then, it’s just allegations, he added.

Prime Minister Kakar disagreed with the view that the decision of May 9 arsons should be left to the people for elections. He also rejected the allegations of not having a level playing field.
