- The late Queen Elizabeth II gave them the use of Frogmore Cottage as a wedding gift in 2018.
- Buckingham Palace chose not to respond.
- The couple has “till early summer to evacuate.”
According to a spokeswoman on Wednesday, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are losing their residence on the Windsor estate of the British royal family, leaving them without a base in the country.
The late Queen Elizabeth II gave them the use of Frogmore Cottage as a wedding gift in 2018, and they renovated it for an estimated cost of £2.4 million ($2.9 million).
According to stories in The Sun and Daily Telegraph, Prince Andrew, King Charles III’s disgraced brother, has now been offered it.
A representative for the American-based couple stated, “We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been told to evacuate their house at Frogmore Cottage,” without offering any other information.
Days after the release of the prince’s frank memoir “Spare,” Harry and Meghan reportedly received a notice ordering them to leave the home in January.
The Buckingham Palace chose not to respond.
Since his mother passed away in September, Harry’s father Charles, who has long favoured a slimmed-down monarchy, has been overhauling the family’s finances.
Andrew’s current home, the 30-room Royal Lodge, which is also on the Windsor estate, may have to be given up if his annual stipend of £250,000 were to be eliminated because of the enormous maintenance requirements.
The couple have “till early summer to evacuate,” according to a source cited by Harry and Meghan’s unofficial biographer Omid Scobie in an article on Yahoo News.
In May, Scobie reported, “Initially they were given just weeks, but now they have at least until after the coronation.” The pair has not yet learned whether they would be invited to Charles’s crowning.
That feels quite final and like a horrible punishment, the couple’s buddy was reported by Scobie as saying.
It appears as though the royal family wants to permanently remove them from the picture.
In 2020, Harry and Meghan abruptly left the life of royalty and relocated to California.
Since then, they have participated in a number of projects, including an Oprah Winfrey interview and a Netflix documentary, in which they have voiced complaints about their lives as royals.
When “Spare” was released in January, it broke sales records but also caused a decline in Harry’s popularity on both sides of the Atlantic.
Meanwhile, Andrew’s association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein led to his exclusion from public life.
Andrew and the accuser Virginia Giuffre reached a civil settlement in a sexual assault case in the US last year.
