Monsoon rains hit Sindh; Heavy showers expected in Karachi until Thursday

Karachi: Monsoon rains have started across various parts of Sindh, including Umerkot, Tharparkar, and Tando Muhammad Khan.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rainfall in several cities including Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro, and Hyderabad until September 11.

In Karachi, heavy rain is expected from this evening through Thursday, with intermittent downpours likely. The PMD has also warned of possible urban flooding due to the intense rainfall.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert for heavy rain in parts of South Punjab over the next two days.

According to the NDMA, cities including Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rajanpur, Khanpur, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sadiqabad are likely to experience heavy rains.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms in the upper and central parts of the country.

The monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are expected to enter Pakistan, while a fresh westerly wave is also likely to affect the region from August 30.

According to the PMD, Kashmir is likely to receive rains at most places, with chances of heavy downpours in some areas. Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab are expected to witness intermittent showers.

The cities including Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan, Bannu, D.I. Khan, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Narowal are likely to experience rainfall during the forecast period.

In Sindh, rain is expected in Tharparkar, Sukkur, Larkana, and Dadu on August 30 and 31. Various parts of Balochistan are also likely to receive showers between August 30 and September 1.

The Met Office has warned that heavy rains may trigger flash floods in streams and nullahs and cause urban flooding in low-lying areas. Citizens are advised to take precautionary measures.

Flood water expected to pass from Sindh on September 3 and 4: Provincial Government

Karachi: The Sindh government has issued a warning of a potential high-level flood in the Indus River due to the ongoing flood situation in Punjab.

According to the Sindh Irrigation Department, an inflow of 630,000 cusecs of water is expected at Guddu Barrage on September 3, and 560,000 cusecs at Sukkur Barrage on September 4.

In light of the flood conditions in Punjab, the Sindh government has appointed provincial ministers as focal persons to monitor and assess possible risks in districts located along the Indus River. These ministers will be responsible for overseeing both the right and left embankments of the river in their respective regions.

From Guddu to Sukkur, Provincial Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla will be the focal person for the right embankment, while Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar will oversee the left embankment.

From Sukkur to Kotri, Jam Ikramullah Dharejo will supervise the right embankment, and Nasir Hussain Shah will handle the left side. Below the Kotri Barrage, Riaz Hussain Shah Sherazi has been appointed for the right embankment and Muhammad Ali Malkani for the left embankment.
