Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi swells, Punjab faces worst flooding in years

Lahore: Punjab still on high alert as a worsening flood crisis grips the province, following fresh water releases from India into the Sutlej River. Emergency warnings have been extended across nine districts, with authorities warning of extremely high-level floods persisting until at least September 5.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed alerts in Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Pakpattan, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Muzaffargarh, as swollen rivers continue to wreak havoc across southern and central Punjab.

Floods Affect Over 2 Million, Death Toll Rises:

Floodwaters from the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers have already impacted more than 2 million people, with the death toll reaching 41. Thousands of families have been displaced as authorities race to conduct mass evacuations from submerged and low-lying areas.

At Head Mohammad Wala in Multan, a massive flood wave of 450,000 cusecs in the Chenab River has tested the city’s primary defenses.

The Akbar Flood Bund is under pressure, and authorities have placed dynamite along Head Mohammad Wala Road to execute emergency breaching operations if water levels continue to rise.

Entire villages from Jhok Venus to Head Mohammad Wala are underwater, while residents near Basti Bosan and Jhok Arabi report complete disruption of education, with schools inundated and children displaced.

In central Punjab, floodwaters have surged into Tandlianwala and Kamalia in Toba Tek Singh, flooding dozens of villages and damaging major access roads.

A significant breach on the GT Road between Lahore and Faisalabad has brought traffic to a halt, further isolating affected areas and hampering relief operations.

At Head Trimmu, flows have surged to over 479,000 cusecs, pushing water into surrounding villages in Jhang and Muzaffargarh. In Chiniot, over 141 villages and 200,000 people have been affected, with rescue teams struggling to reach stranded families.

Sindh on Alert, Health Risks Mount:

While Punjab remains the epicenter of the crisis, a low-level flood continues in Sindh at Sukkur, Kotri, and Guddu barrages. Despite repeated warnings, many residents in riverine (katcha) areas remain reluctant to evacuate.

The National Polio Eradication Programme has raised serious concerns about the spread of polio and waterborne diseases, urging immediate medical interventions and sanitation efforts in affected regions.

Adding to the crisis, the Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in upper catchment areas by September 3, with potential urban flooding in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujrat.

23 dead as riverine floods devastate Pakistan; Punjab worst hit

Islamabad: At least 23 people have lost their lives due to recent flooding and related incidents across Pakistan, with Punjab province bearing the brunt of the tragedy, according to the latest official data.

Province-Wise Breakdown:

Punjab recorded the highest number of fatalities with 18 dead and 9 injured. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) followed with 4 deaths and 4 injuries, while Balochistan reported 1 casualty. No deaths or injuries were reported from Sindh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), or the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).

Among the deceased, 13 were adult males, 2 females, and 8 children — painting a grim picture of how vulnerable populations, especially children, are being affected. Punjab again reported the highest child fatalities, with 4 children among the dead. KP reported 3, and Balochistan reported 1 child fatality.

Causes of Death:

A staggering 77.3% of the deaths were attributed to riverine floods, highlighting the severity of water-related disasters. House collapses caused 18.2% of fatalities, while drowning and other causes contributed to 4.5% each.

This alarming data underscores the urgent need for disaster preparedness, flood control infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns, especially in flood-prone regions like Punjab and KP.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as weather patterns remain unpredictable.

The Flood Forecasting Division has sounded the alarm over high flood levels in several major rivers.

At Balloki on the Ravi, water inflow and outflow were recorded at 175,995 cusecs, placing it in the high flood category. The Sutlej is also swelling, with 134,970 cusecs flowing in and out at Sulemanki.

In Lahore, the Ravi is under pressure at Shahdara, where medium-level flooding has been reported with 67,900 cusecs passing through.

Flood devastation in Punjab: Villages submerged, Millions displaced, 7 dead

Flood devastation in Punjab: Villages submerged, Millions displaced, 7 dead

Lahore: Widespread destruction has been caused in Punjab due to severe flooding in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, following the release of water from India. Several villages have been submerged, with millions displaced, seven people confirmed dead, and three reported missing.

High Alert as Rivers Swell Beyond Capacity:

The River Ravi is witnessing high-level flooding at Shahdara, with a water flow of 145,160 cusecs, expected to rise to 160,000 cusecs. Although this remains below the river’s total capacity of 250,000 cusecs, authorities remain on high alert. At Jassar, the water flow has started to decrease slightly, now recorded at 152,000 cusecs.

The River Chenab has also begun to show slight signs of relief. At Head Khanki, water flow has reduced from 1.05 million cusecs to 859,000 cusecs, and at Head Qadirabad, it stands at 996,000 cusecs—still a dangerously high level.

Meanwhile, the Sutlej River is experiencing unusual and severe flooding. At Ganda Singh Wala, the river is flowing at 261,000 cusecs. Head Marala is also reporting high flood levels of 191,000 cusecs. Medium-level flooding is ongoing at Balloki and Sulemanki.

In Gujranwala Division, seven deaths have been confirmed: three in Gujrat, two in Sialkot, and one each in Narowal and Gujranwala. Additionally, three people are missing in Sambrial (Sialkot), feared swept away by the rising waters.

Several villages in Narowal have been completely submerged, destroying thousands of acres of crops. The Shakargarh–Narowal road is now underwater, and railway service through Qila Ahmadabad has been suspended due to track damage.

At Kot Nainan in Shakargarh, the Ravi River is at extreme flood levels, sweeping away roads and bridges, isolating many communities.

Widespread Damage Across the Province:

Floodwaters have reached dangerously close to the GT Road in suburban Sahiwal due to river erosion. In Wazirabad, the Palkhu Nala has overflowed, inundating several low-lying villages.

In Hafizabad’s village Sajjadah, floodwaters destroyed a key bridge, while in Gujranwala, 4–5 acres of agricultural land are submerged, forcing residents to flee on their own as rescue teams struggle to reach them.

Muzaffargarh is bracing for a major flood wave expected in the next 2–3 days, with many villages already underwater. In Bahawalnagar, cotton and rice crops have suffered extensive damage, and key connecting roads have been washed away.

In Mailsi (Vehari), a breach in a protective embankment has submerged villages and fields. In Multan’s Jalalpur Pirwala area, Sutlej floodwaters have entered residential zones, prompting ongoing rescue efforts.

Evacuations and Rescue Challenges:

Despite repeated warnings from authorities, many residents are unwilling to evacuate, reluctant to leave behind homes and livestock. Emergency response teams continue to work around the clock, but rising water levels and broken infrastructure are hindering relief operations.
