More than 100 people have been detained in Iran on suspicion of poisoning schoolgirls

Iran
  • Iran has experienced a surge in suspected poisonings, nearly solely at girls’ schools.
  • Activists believe the poisonings are linked to the statewide protests that erupted last September.
  • Medical professionals, parents, and educators have accused the Iranian government.

More than 100 persons have been arrested “in connection with” the suspected poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls around the country.

The people were “identified, arrested, and investigated” in different places, including the capital Tehran, citing a statement from Iran‘s Interior Ministry.

“Initial inquiries show that a number of these people, out of mischief or adventurism and with the aim of shutting down classrooms and influenced by the created psychological atmosphere, have taken measures such as using harmless and smelly substances,” the statement read.

In recent months, Iran has experienced a surge in suspected poisonings, nearly solely at girls’ schools.

While Iranian officials believe the girls were targeted by hardline Islamist groups, activists believe the poisonings are linked to the statewide protests that erupted last September in response to Mahsa Ami’s murder. Several schoolgirls have participated in the protests, tearing up photos of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and asking for his murder.

Medical professionals, parents, and educators have accused the Iranian government of attempting to silence the victims.

The suspected poisonings were earlier described as an “unforgivable act” by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who urged for “severe punishment” for those found responsible.

According to the ministry, those arrested “had hostile intents, intended to generate dread and horror among people and students, shut down schools, and engendered pessimism towards” the Iranian government.

These would stay “under investigation until required assurances are achieved,” according to the statement, which also stated that the number of poisoning cases at girls’ schools across the country has decreased “over the past several days.”

Among those arrested, the ministry said, were “individuals who have had hostile motives, tried to create fear and horror among people and students, shut down schools, and created pessimism toward” the Iranian government.

They would remain “under investigation until required assurances are achieved,” the statement said, adding that the number of poisoning cases at girls’ schools across the country had been decreasing “over the past several days.”

According to Iranian official media, the first suspected poisonings occurred in November at a high school in the city of Qom, where 18 schoolgirls were hospitalized.

A mother of two kids from Qom earlier told that both girls, who went to different schools, had had serious health problems as a result of the poisoning.

One girl reported nausea, loss of breath, and numbness in her left leg and right hand, while the other had “difficulty walking,” according to her.

Another instance in the city occurred in February when more than 100 kids from 13 schools were hospitalized as a result of “serial poisonings,” according to Iranian state news media.

Both the US and the UN have urged Iranian authorities to fully investigate the suspected poisonings and hold those guilty accountable.

The White House stated on Monday that there must be a “serious, impartial” probe into the poisonings of Iranian schoolgirls, implying that the topic could fall under the authority of the United Nations.

Originally, the Biden administration stated that Iran was conducting its own inquiry.

“We are closely following this deeply concerning situation that we’re seeing in Iran,” she said. “The continued poisoning of schoolgirls across Iran is unconscionable. There must be a credible, independent investigation (and) accountability for those responsible.”

She said if the poisonings were related to recent protests, it was “well within” the UN fact-finding mission’s mandate.

“The possibility that girls in Iran are being possibly poisoned simply for trying to get an education is shameful, it’s unacceptable,” she said.

Protests erupt in Iran as a result of a wave of suspected poison assaults on schoolgirls

Iran
  • Iranian officials suspect the girls were poisoned and have accused Tehran’s adversaries.
  • Iran’s interior minister announced that investigators had discovered “suspicious samples.”
  • More than 30 schools in at least ten of Iran’s 31 provinces were closed due to illness.

Concerned parents demonstrated on Saturday in Iran‘s capital Tehran and other towns in response to a spate of suspected poison assaults on schoolgirls in dozens of schools, according to Iranian news agencies and social media recordings.

Hundreds of schoolgirls have been stricken by the as-yet unexplained ailments in recent months. Iranian officials suspect the girls were poisoned and have accused Tehran’s adversaries.

The children were subjected to “mild poison” attacks, according to the country’s health minister, and some MPs believe they were targeted by radical Islamist groups opposed to females’ education.

On Saturday, Iran’s interior minister announced that investigators had discovered “suspicious samples” that were being analyzed.

“In field studies, suspicious samples have been found, which are being investigated… to identify the causes of the student’s illness, and the results will be published as soon as possible,” the minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, said in a statement.

On Saturday, more than 30 schools in at least ten of Iran’s 31 provinces were closed due to illness. Social media videos showed parents gathering at schools to pick up their children and some pupils being brought to hospitals by ambulance or bus.

A lady from Qom earlier informed me that her two daughters, who went to different schools, had been poisoned. After being poisoned, one girl experienced severe health problems, including nausea, shortness of breath, numbness in her left leg and right hand, and difficulty walking.

A protest of parents outside an Education Ministry office in western Tehran on Saturday escalated into an anti-government march.

Protesters screamed, “Basij, Guards, you are our Daesh,” comparing the Revolutionary Guards and other security personnel to the Islamic State group.

According to unverified recordings, similar rallies were organized in two other parts of Tehran as well as other towns such as Isfahan and Rasht.

The outbreak of schoolgirl disease comes at a critical time for Iran’s clerical rulers, who have been dealing with months of anti-government rallies started by the murder of a young Iranian lady in the custody of morality police who enforce stringent dress restrictions.

In recent days, social media posts have displayed photographs and videos of girls who have been ill, feeling nauseated, or experiencing heart palpitations. Others reported headaches.

On Friday, the United Nations human rights office in Geneva asked for an open inquiry into the suspected attacks, while countries such as Germany and the United States expressed alarm.

Experts have discussed the challenges in researching the issue in Iran, stating that the incidents were “remarkably similar” to dozens of instances at Afghan schools since 2009. “Pesticides were highly suspected in a couple of these occurrences, but the majority of the diseases remain unexplained,” said Royal United Services Institute defense specialist Dan Kaszeta in London.

Iran condemned foreign intervention and “hasty reactions,” and said on Friday that it was studying the incidents’ causes.

“It is one of the immediate priorities of Iran’s government to pursue this issue as quickly as possible and provide documented information to resolve the families’ concerns and to hold accountable the perpetrators and the causes,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told state media.

Schoolgirls took part in the anti-government demonstrations that began in September. They have ripped up photos of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and chanted for his death in classrooms, where they are required to wear headscarves.

Iran is investigating the toxic gas poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls

Iran
  • Since November, nearly 700 girls have been poisoned by toxic gas in Iran.
  • At least 194 girls are said to have been poisoned in the last week at four schools.
  • Some parents claim their children were sick for weeks following the poisoning.

Since November, nearly 700 girls have been poisoned by toxic gas in Iran, in what many believe is a deliberate attempt to force their schools to close.

Although no girls have died, dozens have experienced respiratory issues, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue.

“It became evident that some people wanted all schools, especially girls’ schools, to be closed down,” the deputy health minister said on Sunday.

However, he later stated that his remarks were misconstrued.

Last week, the prosecutor general announced the launch of a criminal investigation. However, he said that the available information only indicated “the possibility of criminal and premeditated acts”.

Meanwhile, public dissatisfaction is growing.

A protest outside the governor's office in Qom

On November 30, 18 students from the Nour Technical School in the religious city of Qom were poisoned and taken to the hospital.

Since then, more than ten girls’ schools in the surrounding province have been targeted.

At least 194 girls are said to have been poisoned in the last week at four schools in the western province of Lorestan’s Borujerd.

On Tuesday, 37 more students were poisoned at the Khayyam Girls’ School in Pardis, near Tehran.

Before becoming ill, the poisoned girls reported smelling tangerine or rotten fish.

At least 100 people protested outside the governor’s office in Qom earlier this month.

“You are obliged to ensure my children’s safety! I have two daughters,” one father shouted in a video widely shared on social media. “Two daughters… and all I can do is not let them go to school.”

“This is a war!” declared a woman. “They are doing this in a girls’ high school in Qom to force us to sit at home. They want girls to stay at home.”

Some parents claim their children were sick for weeks following the poisoning.

Another hospital video shows a teenage girl lying dazed on a bed, her mother beside her.

“Dear mothers, I’m a mother and my child is in a hospital bed and her limbs are weak,” says the distraught mother. “I pinch her but she doesn’t feel anything. Please don’t send your children to school.”

Heartland of religion

Deputy Health Minister Younes Panahi stated at a press conference on Sunday that the girls had been poisoned by chemicals that:

“are not military grade and are publicly available”.

“The pupils do not need any invasive treatment and it’s necessary to maintain calm,” he added.

Dr Panahi’s comment that it was “evident that some people wanted all schools… to be closed down” appeared to confirm the government believed the poisonings were premeditated.

His subsequent denial indicated disagreements among officials about how to deal with public outrage when no suspects have been identified.

The poisonings have been concentrated in Qom, a city that is home to important Shia Muslim shrines as well as the religious leadership that serves as the Islamic Republic’s backbone.

Since September, the clerical establishment has been challenged by the mass protests that erupted after the death in custody of a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who was detained by morality police for allegedly failing to wear her headscarf “properly”.

Some Iranians believe the schoolgirls are being poisoned as “retaliation” for their role in the unrest. Videos of schoolgirls ripping off their headscarves and chanting anti-establishment slogans flooded social media.

Others believe the poisonings were carried out by hardliners seeking to “copy” the Taliban in Afghanistan and the militant Islamist group Boko Haram in Nigeria by terrorising parents into not sending their daughters to school.

“Has Boko Haram come to Iran?” former Vice-President Mohammad Ali Abtahi asked in an Instagram post.

The reformist politician also warned that “extremists will interpret the boundaries of government and religion in their favour”.

Iran’s leaders have traditionally dismissed criticism of its gender restrictions, such as the mandatory headscarf, and instead boasted about the number of women attending university. College, on the other hand, is a pipe dream for young girls who do not complete high school.

The comments of one schoolgirl, who claims to have been poisoned twice, during a meeting with Qom’s governor earlier this month highlighted how ambiguous and misleading some of the authorities’ statements have been.

“They [officials] tell us: ‘All is good, we’ve done our investigation.’ But when my father asked at my school, they told him: ‘Sorry, the CCTV has been down for a week and we can’t investigate this,'” she said.

“And when I was poisoned for the second time on Sunday, the school principal said: ‘She has a heart condition, that’s why she is hospitalised.’ But I don’t have any heart condition!”
