FBI offers $20,000 reward in case of missing American woman

FBI
  • FBI Assistant Director in charge does not believe narcotics cartels were involved in the kidnapping.
  • The agency has witness reports verifying Lopez’s kidnapping, but no additional facts.
  • The FBI did not reveal any details about the case.

The FBI has issued a $20,000 reward for information leading to the location of a 63-year-old US woman kidnapped from her home in Mexico more than a month ago.

Maria del Carmen Lopez was kidnapped on February 9 in Pueblo Nuevo, a community in the southern Mexico state of Colima, according to a notice from the FBI’s Los Angeles field office on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Colima Attorney General’s office, Lopez is also a Mexican citizen, and the office is cooperating with the FBI on the investigation.

The FBI did not reveal any details about the case, although Lopez was described as having blonde hair, brown eyes, and tattooed eyeliner.

According to FBI Assistant Director in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Office Donald Alway, federal authorities do not believe narcotics cartels were involved in the kidnapping. According to Alway, the agency has witness reports verifying Lopez’s kidnapping, but no additional facts about the case have been released.

“We are going to pursue this, and we’ll look at every avenue and we’ll follow every lead and we’ll open every door that we can find to ensure that our primary goal is to get her back safely,” he added.

The FBI’s revelation comes about two weeks after the kidnapping of four Americans, two of whom were killed, in the Mexican border city of Matamoros, and three weeks after the disappearance of three women who walked into Mexico to sell clothes at a flea market.

The Colima Attorney General’s Office started an investigation into Lopez’s disappearance on the day of the suspected kidnapping, and the Mexico Attorney General’s Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime has since requested to accept the case, according to a statement from Colima officials.

The Colima prosecutor’s office stated that it has shared material with Mexico federal authorities and has also worked with American agencies “in order to clarify the facts and protect the victim’s integrity.”

Anybody with information regarding Lopez’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local FBI office, submit a tip online, or contact the nearest American embassy or consulate.

Almost 100,000 Mexicans and migrants have gone missing across the country, leaving their families with little explanation and scant solace. The Mexican government’s fast response to recent American disappearances has aroused suspicions among those who blame officials for failing to respond in a number of domestic instances.

Covid: FBI Director Christopher Wray believes leak from Chinese laboratory is “most likely”

FBI
  • FBI’s top-secret assessment of how the pandemic virus spread.
  • China has denied the existence of a lab leak in Wuhan, calling the claim slanderous.
  • Several US government agencies have reached conclusions that differ from the FBI’s.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has claimed that the bureau believes Covid-19 “most likely” originated in a “Chinese government-controlled lab”.

“The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident,” he told Fox News.

It’s the first public confirmation of the FBI’s top-secret assessment of how the pandemic virus spread.

China has denied the existence of a lab leak in Wuhan, calling the claim slanderous.

Mr. Wray’s remarks came a day after the US ambassador to China urged the country to “be more honest” about the origins of Covid.

Mr Wray stated in his interview on Tuesday that China “has been doing its best to impede and distort” efforts to pinpoint the origins of the worldwide pandemic.

“And that’s unfortunate for everybody,” he said.

According to some investigations, the virus spread from animals to humans in Wuhan, China, probably through the city’s seafood and wildlife market.

Conclusions that differ

The market is a 40-minute drive from a world-leading virus laboratory, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducts research into coronaviruses.

Several US government agencies have reached conclusions that differ from the FBI’s, with varied degrees of certainty in their findings.

The Chinese government has yet to reply to Mr. Wray’s remarks. On Monday, however, it denied media claims that the US Energy Department had “low confidence” that Covid had leaked from a lab. The government previously stated that it was unsure how the infection originated.

Beijing further referenced a 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) assessment that declared the lab leak allegation “very implausible”.

“Certain parties should stop rehashing the ‘lab leak’ narrative, stop smearing China, and stop politicizing origins-tracing,” said foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

The WHO investigation was deeply criticized and its director-general has since called for a new inquiry, saying: “All hypotheses remain open and require further study.”

Mr. Wray’s remarks came a day after the US ambassador to China urged the country to “be more honest” about the origins of Covid.

Mr. Wray stated in his interview on Tuesday that China “has been doing its best to impede and distort” efforts to pinpoint the origins of the worldwide pandemic.

“And that’s unfortunate for everybody,” he said.

No legitimacy

Following his remarks, Mao Ning, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, stated, “The conclusions they have reached have no legitimacy to speak of.”

According to some investigations, the virus spread from animals to humans in Wuhan, China, probably through the city’s seafood and wildlife market.

The market is a 40-minute drive from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a world-class virus laboratory that conducts coronavirus research.

According to White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby, US President Joe Biden supports “a whole-of-government effort” to figure out how Covid got started.

“We’re simply not there [at agreement] yet,” he explained. “If we have something ready to brief the American people and Congress on, we will do so.”

Tensions in bilateral relations between the United States and China have risen in the aftermath of the recent spy balloon scandal.

This week, a bipartisan panel of US senators launched a series of hearings on the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s “existential” danger.

The first session of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party focused on issues such as human rights and the US economy’s dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

The FBI searches Biden’s papers at the University of Delaware

FBI
  • FBI performed two searches last month.
  • On two separate days, investigators retrieved multiple boxes from the campus.
  • Mr. Biden and his team consented to the search, thus no warrant was required.

The FBI performed two searches at the University of Delaware in the last month to see if US President Joe Biden contributed any potentially secret materials.

On two separate days, investigators retrieved multiple boxes from the campus.

Mr. Biden’s alma mater houses thousands of cartons of documents from his service in the Senate.

Donald Trump is under criminal investigation for his handling of secret data.

Documents marked classified have been discovered in recent months at Mr. Biden’s Delaware home and offices in Washington, DC. During a search of his private property in Wilmington last month, the FBI discovered some of the data.

According to sources familiar with the inquiry, the searches at the University of Delaware took place around the end of January and the beginning of February.

The discovered documents did not appear to have classified markings, but the FBI is now evaluating the files.

No warrant was required

US president and his team consented to the search, thus no warrant was required.

Mr. Biden gave the college 1,850 boxes of information in 2012, but those files have not been made public since then.

Mr. Biden’s personal attorney, the US Department of Justice, and the University of Delaware have yet to respond.

The Justice Department has chosen Robert Hur as special counsel to conduct the inquiry into how Mr. Biden handled sensitive data.

The residence of former US Vice-President Mike Pence was also inspected last week after his aides revealed that they had discovered secret materials during their own search.

Former President Trump is facing a separate inquiry after FBI officers executing a search warrant at his Florida Mar-a-Lago home last year discovered hundreds of files with secret markings.

The FBI discovers another classified paper at ex-VP Pence’s residence

FBI
  • A five-hour search of the Carmel, Indiana house, was conducted with Pence’s consent.
  • FBI removed one document with classified markings and six additional without such markings.
  • Pence is considering a presidential bid in 2024.

The FBI found an additional classified document at the property of former vice president Mike Pence two weeks after the Republican acknowledged having a “small number” of government files at his home.

Pence’s spokesman Devin O´Malley said in a statement to US media that agents had turned up the material in a “thorough and unrestricted” five-hour search of the Carmel, Indiana house, conducted with Pence’s consent.

They removed “one document with classified markings and six additional without such markings that were not discovered in the initial review by the vice president’s counsel,” he added.

The search came after Pence, who is considering a presidential bid in 2024, revealed last month that an aide had discovered secret materials, which he most certainly took with him when he left the White House in January 2021.

This came after searches of President Joe Biden‘s and former President Donald Trump’s houses turned up secret documents.

Former top US officials are required to turn up to the National Archives any official records from their time in the White House.

Last August, FBI agents raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and discovered considerable numbers of secret materials, despite Trump’s claim that there were none.

That came after months of National Archives requests for all of the materials Donald Trump brought with him.

An independent Justice Department prosecutor is investigating the former president for illegally stealing and retaining sensitive documents, as well as an obstruction for obstructing the inquiry.

After Trump’s case became public, confidential documents were discovered at a Washington office that Biden used before becoming president.

This resulted in FBI searches of Biden’s house in Wilmington, Delaware, where more documents were discovered, and his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where none were discovered.

“The vice president has directed his legal team to continue its cooperation with appropriate authorities and to be fully transparent through the conclusion of this matter,” added O´Malley in the statement quoted by multiple US media outlets.

The latest discovery comes after Pence was reportedly subpoenaed Thursday in a separate FBI investigation investigating Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

North Korea behind $100m crypto theft, FBI says

FBI
  • North Korean cyber actors used the privacy protocol Railgun to launder more than $60 million.
  • A blockchain bridge was used to transfer cryptocurrencies between different blockchain networks.
  • Cyberattacks increased by 40% between 2020 and 2021.

According to US law enforcement, North Korean hackers were responsible for the theft of $100 million in digital assets from a US crypto firm last year.

The cyber heist on crypto firm Harmony was carried out last June by North Korean hacking groups Lazarus Group and APT38, according to a statement issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Monday.

According to the FBI, North Korean cyber actors used the privacy protocol Railgun earlier this month to launder more than $60 million in Ethereum stolen during the heist, a portion of which was sent to several virtual asset service providers and converted to Bitcoin.

Harmony, based in California, announced in June that hackers had stolen $100 million in digital coins from Horizon bridge, a so-called blockchain bridge used to transfer cryptocurrencies between different blockchain networks.

The FBI, which had previously issued an advisory about a malware campaign used in the “TraderTraitor” heist, said it had frozen some of the funds with the help of some of the virtual asset service providers.

The FBI would continue to work to “identify and disrupt”

In attempts to steal and launder cryptocurrency to fund the secretive state’s illicit missile and nuclear weapons programs.

“The FBI will continue to expose and combat the DPRK’s use of illicit activities, including cybercrime and virtual currency theft, to generate revenue for the regime,” the FBI said, referring to the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

North Korea, led by third-generation dictator Kim Jong Un, has been accused by US and UN officials of orchestrating an escalating cyber theft campaign to fund its activities, which include the development of long-range ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.

South Korea’s spy agency reported in December that North Korean hackers had stolen an estimated 1.5 trillion South Korean won ($1.2 billion) in virtual assets over the previous five years, including 800 billion South Korean won ($650.5 million) in 2022 alone.

According to a report released in January last year by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, the value of assets stolen in North Korea-linked cyberattacks increased by 40% between 2020 and 2021.

Last month, Google’s anti-hacking unit revealed that North Korean hackers used South Korea’s deadly Halloween crowd crush to target internet users with malware planted in documents disguised as South Korean government reports.

The US Department of Justice charged three North Korean computer programmers in 2021 with extorting or stealing more than $1.3 billion in cash and cryptocurrency in a series of cyberattacks that began in 2014.

North Korea, which typically does not engage with international media, has denied carrying out cyberattacks overseas and accused the US and its allies of “spreading ill-hearted rumors”.
