US: Six-year-old who shot teacher won’t be charged – prosecutor

US
  • Authorities have yet to decide if any adults would face criminal charges in the case.
  • The child carried the gun to Richneck Elementary School on January 6th in his backpack.
  • Teacher Abigail Zwerner, 25, was wounded in the hand and chest but survived.

A prosecutor has suggested that a six-year-old kid who shot his teacher in a primary school in the US state of Virginia is unlikely to face charges.

However, authorities have yet to decide if any adults would face criminal charges in the case.

According to police, the child carried the gun to Richneck Elementary School on January 6th in his backpack.

Teacher Abigail Zwerner, 25, was wounded in the hand and chest but survived.

Commonwealth‘s Attorney Howard Gwynn stated on Wednesday that his office would not press charges against the kid.

He stated that “the thought of a six-year-old standing trial is troubling” since the child is too young to understand the legal system.

“Our objective is not just to do something as quickly as possible,” Mr. Gwynn added.

“Once we analyze all the facts, we will charge any person or persons that we believe we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt committed a crime.”

Ms. Zwerner is suing the school district after being shot through the hand and upper chest during an “altercation” with a first-grader, according to police.

According to authorities, the pistol was properly purchased and belonged to the child’s mother.

Another six-year-old boy in Virginia brings a gun to school

Virginia
  • A six-year-old boy brought a gun to his elementary school in Virginia.
  • Staff handed up the firearm to the police.
  • Another six-year-old in the state shot and injured his teacher last month.

A six-year-old boy’s mother was arrested after he brought a gun to his elementary school in Virginia, the latest similar occurrence in the state.

On Thursday afternoon, police were called to Little Creek Elementary School in Norfolk, where staff handed up the firearm.

Although no one was hurt, one mother claims the youngster threatened to shoot her daughter in class.

Another six-year-old in the state shot and injured his teacher last month.

In the most recent incident, the boy’s mother was charged on Friday with contributing to a minor’s delinquency and providing youngsters access to a loaded pistol. The source is not naming her in order to protect the identity of the child.

According to another mother, the youngster carried a loaded gun to school in his backpack and threatened to shoot her daughter during physical education class on Thursday. But, the woman learned of the danger through another parent.

Her daughter did not tell her because she thought she might get in trouble. The girl told the broadcaster that after coming home from school she went to her bedroom “and tried to play but couldn’t”.

The incident is similar to the instance of a six-year-old kid who carried a gun to class in Newport News, Virginia, on January 6, with near-fatal results.

He shot and critically injured his teacher, Abby Zwerner, 25, who is now suing the Richneck Elementary School district.

Six-year-old boy detained in the US after shooting a teacher

  • Six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom.
  • Victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.
  • The teacher was badly injured.

Washington: A six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom at an elementary school on Friday, badly injuring a teacher, according to the police.

“The student involved is six years old. Steve Drew, the local police chief, stated at a news conference that “this was not an accident shooting” and that “he is currently in police custody.”

According to police, the victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.

“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened,” said the city’s superintendent of schools, George Parker.

“We need the community’s support to make sure that guns are not available to youth.”

The recent tragedy of an 18-year-old gunman killing 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas last May is only one example of the tragic trend of school shootings in the US.

According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the US every year, with half of those deaths occurring as a result of homicide, accidents, or self-defense, and the other half as a result of suicide.
