Ales Bialiatski: Nobel Peace Prize winner sentenced to ten years in prison

Nobel Peace Prize
  • Mr. Bialiatski was one of three Nobel Peace Prize laureates in 2022.
  • Mr. Bialiatski appeared in court with two other activists.
  • He was sentenced to three years in prison in 2011 after being convicted of tax evasion, which he denied.

A Belarussian court convicted Nobel Peace Prize recipient Ales Bialiatski to ten years in prison.

He was convicted of smuggling and financing “grossly disturbing public order,” according to the Viasna human rights group.

Supporters of Mr. Bialiatski, 60, claim that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s autocratic regime is attempting to suppress him.

Mr. Bialiatski was one of three Nobel Peace Prize laureates in 2022.

After major street protests amid highly disputed elections the previous year, he was arrested in 2021 and accused of sneaking cash into Belarus to fund opposition activity.

During the demonstrations, which began in 2020, demonstrators were confronted with police brutality, and Lukashenko’s detractors were often arrested and incarcerated.

Mr. Bialiatski appeared in court with two other activists, Valentin Stefanovich, and Vladimir Labkovich.

According to Viasna, the group Mr. Bialiatski formed in 1996, Mr. Stefanovich was sentenced to nine years in prison, while Mr. Labkovich received seven years.

Mr. Bialiatski’s wife, Natalya Pinchuk, said the trial was “clearly against human rights defenders for their human rights work”, describing it as a “cruel” result.

She stated, in reference to her husband’s letters from prison, where he has been imprisoned since his arrest: “Everything is OK, he always writes. He doesn’t complain about his health since he doesn’t want to upset me.”

Kostya Staradubets, a spokesperson for Viasna, said the sentences imposed on the three activists were “breaking our hearts”.

He said: “We knew that our three colleagues would get lengthy prison terms but anyway it’s still a shock, it’s breaking our hearts, not only the [prison] periods are long but the conditions also very horrific.

“We call [the conditions] torture actually because they’re being held for several months in a 19th Century building, poorly lit cells with no fresh air, no sunlight, poor food, little or no healthcare.”

Belarus’s exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said the penalty was “simply appalling”.

“We must do everything to fight against this shameful injustice and free them,” she said.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize, said the verdict was a “tragedy” for Mr. Bialiatski and described the charges as “politically motivated”.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell decried what he termed “sham trials”, adding they were “another horrific example of the Lukashenko government trying to suppress individuals who stand up in defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people in Belarus”.

According to Viasna, there are now 1,458 political prisoners in Belarus. According to authorities, there are none.

Ms. Reiss-Anderson stated that the Belarusian government had “for years tried to silence him” in giving Mr. Bialiatski the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

“He has been harassed, arrested, and jailed, and he has been denied a job,” she stated.

Mr. Bialiatski is a veteran of the Belarusian human rights struggle, having founded Viasna in 1996 in response to the harsh repression.

Russian military plane blown up near Minsk: Belarusian partisans

Russian military
  • The front and middle components of the aircraft, as well as the radar antenna, were damaged in the attack.
  • Belarusian anti-government groups claimed responsibility.
  • Russia and Belarus have established a combined military unit in Belarus and have conducted many drills there.

Belarusian anti-government groups claimed responsibility for a drone strike on a Russian A-50 surveillance plane at an airbase near Minsk on Sunday.

“Those were drones. The operation’s participants are Belarusians, “BYPOL’s commander, Aliaksandr Azarov, was quoted on the organization’s Telegram messaging app and the Belsat news channel in Poland.

“They are now safe, outside the country.”

There was no official confirmation from Russia or Belarus, and their defense ministries did not respond immediately to calls for comment.

Belsat is a Polish broadcaster that focuses on Belarusian news and has been labeled extreme by Minsk. BYPOL, which is made up of former law enforcement officers who back opposition candidates, has been labeled a terrorist organization.

According to Franak Viacorka, an assistant to Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, it was the most successful act of sabotage since the beginning of 2022.

Damage

The front and middle components of the aircraft, as well as the radar antenna, were damaged in the attack on the Machulishchy air base near Minsk, according to BYPOL.

The Beriev A-50, codenamed Mainstay by NATO, is a Russian airborne early warning aircraft with airborne command and control capabilities and the ability to track up to 60 targets at once.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began a year ago, there have been multiple acts of sabotage in Belarus and Russian neighboring territories, particularly on the railway infrastructure.

Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko has not directly participated in Russia’s assault on Ukraine, but he has enabled its forces to utilize territory as a staging post since the invasion began a year ago.

Russia and Belarus have established a combined military unit in Belarus and have conducted many drills there. Many Russian airplanes as well as airborne early warning and control aircraft have been deployed to Belarus.

“I am proud of all Belarusians who continue to resist the Russian hybrid occupation of Belarus & fight for the freedom of Ukraine,” Tsikhanouskaya wrote on Twitter.

According to the Belarusian human rights organization Vyasna, a lady was imprisoned in Machulishchy on Monday, but the reason for her detention and her whereabouts remained unknown.

There was no word on whether the detention was related to the alleged airplane sabotage.

Detentions are prevalent in Belarus, even for minor offenses such as social media comments, especially after Lukashenko repressed huge pro-democracy protests in 2020 and imprisoned or forced all leading opposition members to leave overseas.

Medvedev of Russia proposes to push Poland’s boundaries

Russia
  • Medvedev made the remarks in a message on his Telegram account.
  • The best way for Moscow to achieve long-term peace with Ukraine was to push hostile governments’ boundaries back.
  • He stated that the accord would lack “basic agreements on real borders.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated on Friday that the best way for Moscow to achieve long-term peace with Ukraine was to push hostile governments’ boundaries back as far as possible, including NATO member Poland’s.

Medvedev made the remarks in a message on his Telegram account, exactly a year after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in what it dubbed a “special military operation” to defend Russian speakers and maintain its own security.

Ukraine claims to be defending itself against an unprovoked colonial-style attack and has threatened to recover all of its own territories by force, including Crimea, which Russia invaded in 2014.

On Friday, Medvedev, a close supporter of President Vladimir Putin, predicted that Russia would win and that a loose deal would eventually put an end to the war.

“Victory will be achieved. We all want it to happen as soon as possible. And that day will come,” said Medvedev. He predicted that tough negotiations with Ukraine and the West would follow that would culminate in “some kind of agreement.”

However, he stated that the accord would lack “basic agreements on real borders” and would not amount to an overarching European security treaty, making it critical for Russia to extend its own borders immediately.

“That is why it is critical to achieving all of the special military operation’s objectives. To drive back as far as possible the borders that endanger our country, even if they are Polish borders, “Medvedev stated.

Poland shares extensive eastern borders with Ukraine and Russia’s ally Belarus, as well as a 200-kilometer (125-mile) border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad in its northeastern corner.

Any expansion on Poland’s borders would put Moscow in direct conflict with NATO for the first time. At a speech this week in Warsaw, US President Joseph Biden committed to defending “every inch” of NATO territory if it was attacked.

Since the start of the war, Medvedev, 57, has taken an increasingly belligerent tone and made a number of loud comments, with some political observers speculating he is one of the persons Putin may one day consider as a successor.
