ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari approved remission for the prisoners on the occasion of Pakistan Day annually observed on March 23 and Eid ul Fitr.

The president granted a remission of 180 days, for both occasions in sentences exercising his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution.

However, the remission would not be applicable on the prisoners involved in murder, espionage and anti-state activities.

Besides, the prisoners involved in rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and financial crimes, would also be ineligible for the remission.

The reduction in sentences would be applicable on the male prisoners of over 65 years age and female prisoners of over 60 years age, who had completed one-third of the sentence.

The juvenile prisoners, who had completed one third of their sentence would also be entitled for the remission.

56 Pakistani prisoners return home from Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD: The combined efforts of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Federal Minister for Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan have successfully led to the return of 56 Pakistanis imprisoned in Sri Lanka for several years.

A chartered plane was dispatched to bring the prisoners back to Pakistan, and they are expected to arrive home on Sunday.

The repatriation effort was a result of three months of coordination between the Ministry of Interior, under the direction of Mohsin Naqvi, and Sri Lankan authorities.

Naqvi had tasked the ministry with facilitating the release and safe return of the Pakistani nationals.

In a significant gesture of support, Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan will cover all the expenses associated with the prisoners’ repatriation from Sri Lanka.

Minister Naqvi expressed his gratitude to the Sri Lankan government and its High Commissioner for their assistance in the matter.

He also thanked Minister Abdul Aleem Khan for generously taking on the financial responsibility of bringing the prisoners home.

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has introduced the system of recording the statements of under-trial prisoners through video link.

This system was introduced by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Aqeel Ahmad Abbasi, under the new system the statements of the under-trial prisoners will be recorded through a video link.

According to the declaration of the Sindh High Court, recording the statements through video link will save the time and transport costs of the police, and lawyers, and also improve the security situation.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi has approved a 180-day remission in the sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day.

Reduction of sentences will be applied to life imprisonment offenders.

The commutation of sentences will not apply to prisoners involved in murder, spying, and anti-state activities.

Remission of sentences will not apply to criminals convicted of adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism.

Criminals committing financial crimes and causing damage to the national exchequer will also not be able to benefit from the reduced sentences.

The reduction in sentence will apply to male prisoners who are above 65 years of age and have served one-third of their sentence.

Remission of sentence will also apply to women prisoners above 60 years of age who have served one-third of their imprisonment.

Persons under 18 years of age who have served one-third of their sentence will also be subject to a reduced sentence.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India exchanged list of strategic facilities, nuclear installations  and prisoners through diplomatic channels in each other’s custody in pursuance of agreements signed between both countries.

Spokesperson Foreign Office said, “The simultaneous exchange of lists took place in pursuance of the Consular Access Agreement of 2008. Under the agreement, both countries are required to exchange the lists of prisoners in each other’s custody on the 1st of January and 1st of July, every year.”

The government of Pakistan shared with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad a list of 705 Indian prisoners detained in Pakistan, including 51 civilian prisoners and 654 fishermen.

The Indian government also shared with the High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi a list of 434 Pakistani prisoners in India, including 339 civilian prisoners and 95 fishermen.

According to the Agreement, the list of nuclear installations and facilities in Pakistan was officially handed over to a representative of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Simultaneously, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs also handed over the list of India’s nuclear installations and facilities to a representative of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.

Separately, the spokesperson said, Pakistan has requested for early release and repatriation of its 51 civilian prisoners and 94 fishermen, who have completed their respective sentences, and their national status stands confirmed.
