President Zardari approves remission for prisoners

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari approved remission for the prisoners on the occasion of Pakistan Day annually observed on March 23 and Eid ul Fitr.

The president granted a remission of 180 days, for both occasions in sentences exercising his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution.

However, the remission would not be applicable on the prisoners involved in murder, espionage and anti-state activities.

Besides, the prisoners involved in rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and financial crimes, would also be ineligible for the remission.

The reduction in sentences would be applicable on the male prisoners of over 65 years age and female prisoners of over 60 years age, who had completed one-third of the sentence.

The juvenile prisoners, who had completed one third of their sentence would also be entitled for the remission.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari administrated oath of office from Acting Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Justice Sarfaraz Dogar.

Acting Chief Justice Islamabad High Court was sworn in in the Presidency of Islamabad, attended by lawyers, judges and government figures.

After the appointment of former Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Justice Aamer Farooq to the Supreme Court, Justice Sarfaraz Dogar was approved to appoint Acting Chief Justice Islamabad High Court.

Justice Sarfaraz Dogar will fulfill the duties of acting Chief Justice till the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court.

It is to be noted that five judges of the Islamabad High Court had also written a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan on the transfer of Islamabad High Court from other High Courts and raised objections to seniority.

President, PM vow to give access to education to blind people

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government was determined to provide better access of education and other facilities to the visually impaired people.

In a message on the World Braille Day on January 4, 2025, he said, “We are observing the Braille Day to highlight the importance of access of education for people deprived of eyesight.”

He said the objective of observing the World Braille Day was to create awareness about the rights of people deprived of eyesight. He said it was imperative to provide access to education to the special people for social and economic independence.

He noted that Braille was an important medium for visually impaired people to get education and knowledge.

He underlined the need for ensuring provision of important information to the blind people and said more urgent steps were needed to give visually impaired people access to books in Braille.

Pakistan had ratified the Marrakesh agreement for ensuring access of visually impaired people to education, he said adding high quality educational and informative material should be made available to the visually impaired people.

President Zardari urged that there was a need to pay attention to all sections of people for creating a society based on justice and equality.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said the government was committed in its resolve for creating enablers in society that empowered all individuals through accessible education, equipping schools with Braille books, enhancing teacher training, and establishing specialized centres for visually impaired students.

In a message on World Braille Day on January 4, 2024, he said, “Today, on World Braille Day, we join the global community in celebrating the transformative power of Braille, a remarkable system that has opened doors to knowledge, communication, and independence for millions of visually impaired individuals worldwide.”

He said, “Braille is not just a tool for reading and writing; it is a window to inclusivity and equal opportunities, empowering individuals to lead independent and dignified lives.
