Siddharth Anand director of Bollywood action entertainers discusses his vision

Siddharth Anand,

Siddharth Anand believes India can produce action films on par with Hollywood. He hopes to make India’s first airborne action picture, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. That is my intention with ‘Fighter,’ and I am quite pleased about it. Siddharth Anand, a Bollywood director who has delivered two hits in a row with ‘War’ … Read more

Siddharth Anand believes Hrithik Roshan should direct a film soon

Siddharth Anand & Hrithik Roshan
  • Siddharth Anand is already on the fourth schedule of the aerial action film with lead actor Hrithik.
  • He also said that Hrithik is a closet filmmaker.
  • Siddharth has already worked with Hrithik Roshan on Bang Bang (2014) and War (2019).

Siddharth Anand is hard at work on his next movie, Fighter, which stars Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, and Anil Kapoor and was a huge hit. The aerial action film’s director and lead actor Hrithik Roshan are currently in their fourth schedule. Siddharth praised the actor for his total dedication to the project and argued that Hrithik should soon direct his own film. Additionally, he stated that Hrithik is a secret filmmaker.

Siddharth has previously worked with Hrithik Roshan on Bang (2014) and War (2019). The director announced that he had completed 25% of the film, which stars Hrithik Roshan as Patty, a fighter pilot who aspires to become India’s best. In the movie, Talat Aziz, a singer, also plays Hrithik’s father.

Siddharth talked to Mid-Day about the actor, who he thought had a filmmaker inside of him. “Hrithik is a complete Hindi film hero,” he stated. He is a complex performer who not only adds nuance to his role but also motivates the actors in front of him, ensuring that everyone shines in the movie. In a movie, Hrithik does not look at himself alone. He is a secret filmmaker and is unaware of it. He needs to direct a movie soon, I keep telling him.

The director went on to say that Pathaan’s release, which brought audiences back to theaters, made him feel righteous. “[Before the movie’s release], some sections of the Hindi film industry and the public started believing in the Boycott Bollywood trend,” he mentioned. They stopped having faith in their own films. Pathaan, on the other hand, provided an answer to everything: “Make a film with the right intentions and people will come to the theater.”

Interestingly, Hrithik Roshan has worked with his father on four of Rakesh Roshan’s films, including Khudgarz (1987) and Karan Arjun (1995). Before making his directorial debut with Khudgarz, Rakesh also worked as an actor in the 1970s. Last year, Hrithik appeared in the Hindi remake of Vikram Vedha alongside Saif Ali Khan. The film was a remake of their 2017 Tamil film of the same name starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi, which Pushkar–Gayathri wrote and directed.
On March 22, Pathaan, which also features Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana, will premiere digitally on Prime Video.

Siddharth Anand opens up about working with Salman Khan & SRK in Pathaan

Siddharth Anand
  • Siddharth Anand is the man of the hour for his success with Pathaan, which has crossed the Baahubali 2 Hindi collection.
  • He opened up about his love for action films, making Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan come together, dealing with boycott trends.
  • His production house. He also rubbished rumours of Dhoom 4.

The man of the hour is director Siddharth Anand, whose movie Pathaan keeps breaking records at theaters all around the world. Siddharth spoke candidly about the success of his production company, his love for action movies, bringing Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan together, and coping with boycott trends. He also denied reports that Shah Rukh Khan might appear in Dhoom 4.

You are the man of the hour. Many have credited you for ‘saving’ Bollywood. How does it feel to become the number 1 director to cross Baahubali 2 Hindi collection?

Siddharth Anand: It’s an incredible feeling. It’s a lot of validation for all the hard work, effort and journey of filmmaking for 20 years. And, to finally make a film that’s at the summit of all Hindi films. It’s humbling, moving and exciting, it’s all adjectives, rolled into one.

From Salaam Namaste to Pathaan. Tell us about your journey as a filmmaker.

Siddharth Anand: My journey as a filmmaker started out with something which was in my comfort zone, making rom-com and slice-of-life films. I knew that world was very tangible and relatable at that point in time. On stories that also were emotional yet had a flavour of commerce and a sense of commercial films, that was my comfort zone. I think by the time of Anjaana Anjaani, I became a little too comfortable. Those kinds of films just came out super naturally and I didn’t feel challenged enough.

Post that, I somewhere tried out stories to tell in that genre. I have a certain deficit disorder wherein I constantly need to stay engaged in my mind. Fortunately, I found a genre to shift into—action. At that time, the kind of action I wanted to do was not done in the country, they were not making action films like these flavour and fun. I kind of found my own niche in that. War cemented it and like Adi (Aditya Chopra) once said, found my voice, as a filmmaker with War. Pathaan just substantiated that. So here I am doing films I love. I am like a kid in a candy store right now.

You have delivered War pre-pandemic and Pathaan post. So basically you emerged pandemic-proof.

Siddharth Anand: In that sense, the audience has been gracious and has loved and embraced my films. I have stayed true to what I wanted to do consistently, and with that not tried to experiment or over-indulge even after a massive success like War. The idea is to just stay honest and true, and also evolve with the audience but not overindulge. That’s the secret to it.

Pathaan also came out strong amid unprecedented times in Bollywood. Was there a plan to navigate your way? Especially with boycott trends

Siddharth Anand: The idea was to do nothing about the boycott trend. It was to just let the film answer them because we knew there was nothing offensive in the film. Nothing to offend them, in fact, they would enjoy the film. We were confident of that. We just wanted them to give us a chance and at least see the film. And that’s what happened. After the first two shows of Pathaan, all those voices died down, there was only love. Eventually, that is what matters. No matter how much we say ‘oh there’s nothing offensive,’ it would only create more noise.

You maintained that directing Shah Rukh Khan was a responsibility. You also worked with Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff in the same genre. How each has been different?

Siddharth Anand: Extremely different. Each has its own personality and strength. As a director one has to become a counsellor as well. In the sense, you need to adapt to the actor, and cater to that personality, ensuring you get the best of him in the way that works. Sometimes you have to specialise when working with these kinds of stars. Because they are set and they have been here much longer than you have been.

All of them have their own school of thought and process. It’s been a dream to direct them, and now I am back (with Hrithik). It’s like coming home.

Yes with Fighter. You just finished a schedule right? Give us an update

Siddharth Anand: We have wrapped three schedules actually. We just finished the Hyderabad one. We are done with 25% of the film, it’s till, still many days to go. But yeah, the journey of a fighter has begun.

Talking about Pathaan, you ended up reuniting Salman Khan with Shah Rukh Khan in a film after years. Many called it the best thing about the film.

Siddharth Anand: Yeah, it was nostalgic for me also. Especially for the last running on the train scene. I told Salman to shout ‘bhaag Pathaan bhaag’ and told him to do it like ‘bhaag Arjun bhaag (from Karan Arjun).’ It wasn’t in the script. It was funny and I had to convince Salman to do it. It was so much fun.

What was Salman’s reaction to the scene when you narrated it?

Siddharth Anand: He laughed. He said ‘You are not serious.’ I said ‘yes I want you to do it’. He did it so well. He is like clay. He is so sweet and just needs love and pampering. He got a lot of that from me. He did exactly what I told him to do.

So far zero flops to be blunt. Any hesitation before the film releases?

Siddharth Anand: Lots of it (laughs). It’s a record, I hope and pray now that we talking about it, it sustains. Releasing films and maintaining a 100% track record is a blessing and thought to keep. I hope it continues for the next 8-9 years. Fingers crossed.

Would you like to share a specific anecdote from the making of Pathaan?

Siddharth Anand: There are so many. It’s only memories now. Let me enjoy the success now.

Will we get to see more Hollywood stars in your future projects? You roped in Tom Cruise’s action director for Pathaan

Siddharth Anand: We looked up Casey O’Neil’s work and liked it. We reached out to him and he was gracious enough to come down. We worked quite closely and he’s been quite a huge asset on the sets of Pathaan.

How was Shah Rukh Khan working with him?

Siddharth Anand: He took it like fish in the water. He actually has a great prototype as an actor, his body is great. He was very comfortable and no one has done that with him before. I am just lucky to do it with him.

Even I read that Shah Rukh felt shy about flaunting his abs…

Siddharth Anand: He is a very shy person. He isn’t as flamboyant as it seems. He likes intimate gatherings and conversations. Showing off his body is the last thing he likes to do he is very shy that way. I think it took quite a lot of convincing for us to do it.

You are still not on social media. Why so?

Siddharth Anand: Consciously I’m not. It allows me time to work. Social media is like a fridge, you keep opening it to check what’s inside it. If I get that much time, I work or spend time with my family for recreation. I think I have nothing to share with people that much; I like my anonymity and a personal life to remain on my own.

I think people have a lot to share with you

Siddharth Anand: Through my films, I get that. I am very happy about it.

You might not be on social media but you do have a fake account on Twitter now…

Siddharth Anand: Yeah, I read about it. I have heard the news that I have announced Dhoom 4. That too with Shah Rukh, I congratulated him that day (laughs), it’s funny. Fans have taken it a bit too far. I hope that account comes down.

Now that you have made your place in the action genre, do you think we can see you behind a rom-com like Anjaana Anjaani again? What’s next?

Siddharth Anand: I would love to do that if I get a script but I think my effort is to establish my production house, Marflix Pictures Private Limited as a premium action production house. With Rambo starring Tiger and Rohit Dhawan as the director, and now Fighter, under it.

Sajjad of Tiger Zinda Hai recounts falling short in Hrithik’s War

Sajjad
  • Sajjad Delafrooz, it was Siddharth Anand’s War which didn’t materialise for him.
  • For an actor losing a job isn’t a big deal.
  • After a point it’s imperative for them to have an exterior to deal with rejections.

Losing a job isn’t a big thing for an actor, but eventually they need to develop a tough exterior to handle rejection. However, it does hurt a little more when a dream endeavor fails. Actor Sajjad Delafrooz was “heartbroken” because Siddharth Anand’s War didn’t pan out for him.

“Because I was a foreigner, the visa application and documentation processes took a while. They had sealed the location since they were filming abroad, and my order was delayed for almost two to three days. They cannot move when you are shooting abroad. So I lost my work as a result of a two-day delay, Delafrooz recounts.

Even though War was a financial success, Delafrooz was particularly hurt by its loss because it was the first film he had been offered after making his acting debut in Tiger Zinda Hai.

“I didn’t have a good feeling. After a while, you become used to it. But at the time, I was rather astonished. 48 hours only. I lost my job because I was unable to board that train. For me, it was a learning experience, the actor admits.

The actor admits that he “lost maybe two or three huge projects” in the previous year. “For me, losing a major movie is a terrible experience. But what to say, exactly? In that situation, you can’t hold yourself entirely responsible every day. I tried my best, but that was all I could do at the time,” he says.

  • The building housed approximately 35 people.
  • Only one person was rescued alive from the rubble of the five-story building.

Aleppo: A building collapsed on Sunday in Syria‘s war-torn second city of Aleppo, killing 16 people, including children, according to authorities and media.

Much of Aleppo was destroyed during Syria’s nearly 12-year conflict, leaving many of the remaining structures in disrepair.

“The death toll from the residential building collapse has risen to 16.”

The death toll from the residential building collapse has risen to 16, according to the state news agency.

According to Syria’s interior ministry, only one person was rescued alive from the rubble of the five-story building, which housed seven families.

It was unclear whether anyone else had survived the tragedy in the city that served as Syria’s pre-war commercial hub.

Earlier Sunday state agency gave an initial death toll of 10, which rose throughout the day as search operations continued.

A Kurdish news agency said five children were among the dead.

According to a war monitor, the victims included Syrians who had been displaced during the country’s years of fighting.

According to locals, the building housed approximately 35 people.

Video footage shared on state television showed dozens of rescue workers at the scene, with some digging into the grey rubble with their bare hands. Earthmovers scooped up the building materials, releasing dust into the air.

According to a police source, the building in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood collapsed “due to a water leak” in the foundations.

A war-damaged block of flats also crumbled in the city in February 2019, leaving 11 people dead with four children among them.

No sleep in Ukraine’s relentlessly bombed city

  • Mykolaiv has been under continuous Russian bombardment since February. Residents estimate that they have only experienced 20 peaceful nights since conflict began.
  • The Russian bombardment, which has included a number of daytime attacks, has intensified over the past week. Sometimes there is a definite target, but most of the time it’s a game of chance.
  • Since February, Russian missiles have been responsible for the deaths of 130 civilians and the injuries of 589 more in Mykolaiv.

In Mykolaiv, the first night is always the most difficult. In a Ukrainian city that has been under virtually continual Russian bombardment since the war’s start in February, sleeping is practically impossible.

Your thoughts are either racing, trying desperately to determine how close the most recent explosion was, whether it was a missile or a rocket, a single explosion or a salvo, or you’re wondering when the windows will start to tremble once more and the air raid siren will start to scream.

But if outsiders like me, who have visited the city three times since the conflict started, find the long evenings difficult, how can residents, who estimate that they have only experienced 20 or so peaceful nights since the war started, possibly cope?

“Sleep? Not a lot, “stated our hotel’s manager one morning last week. When she hurried past the boarded-up windows in March to show visitors the makeshift bomb shelter in the cellar, she appeared inexhaustibly vivacious.

Her expression today, however, revealed the weariness that seems to be consuming most of Mykolaiv.

“I don’t have a cellar of my own at home. It is submerged. We have nowhere to hide, therefore. Just lying there in the pitch black. The blasts were a few blocks away last night, which was the closest yet “She spoke.

As people ready themselves immediately, unconsciously, and permanently to react to anything that may sound like a missile or a plane, once commonplace sounds like a slammed door or a growling truck are now filled with horror.

“Me? I’ve been making an effort to get to bed early. at 7 or 8 o’clock. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a few hours before the booms start this way “said Gela Chavchavadze, 60, the proprietor of a café that provides free prepared meals to neighbourhoods that were attacked the previous evening.

Usually, the explosions begin shortly after midnight. In addition to jet-launched bombs and destructive cruise missiles, there was artillery bombardment from Russian forces to the south as well as rocket fire from behind the frontlines farther east.

Sometimes there is a definite target, but most of the time, whether on purpose or by accident, the explosives happen in residential areas at random, turning every night into a terrifying game of chance.

The Russian bombardment, which has included a number of daytime attacks, has intensified over the past week.

Mykolaiv military spokesman Capt. Dmitro Pletenchuk offered some hypothetical statistical solace to visiting journalists standing close to the rubble of the city’s administrative headquarters by saying, “It’s a huge city. However, he advised us to always wear body armour and emailed me later to clarify that since February, Russian missiles had been responsible for the deaths of 130 civilians and the injuries of 589 more.

Two hours after cluster bombs detonated on the street outside, dentist Alexander Yakovenko, 58, swept glass fragments off the remains of his kitchen table and questioned why he was still alive.

“I’m at a loss for words. I shouldn’t be here [living]. Every single night, the siren sounds. But last night I made the decision to relocate out of my bedroom and into the other side of the flat for whatever reason “He pointed at the wall’s shrapnel marks, which undoubtedly would have killed him.

Olga, a neighbour who had stopped by to assist with cleanup, started crying.

“What should I tell my grandson? He cried when he woke up one night and told me, “Granny, I want to live,” “Before going back to clear more glass from the floor, she said.

“Everything is in God’s hands. What will occur will occur, “Four hours after a missile created a large crater in her yard, 67-year-old Svetlana Kharlanova stood on the doorstep of her nearly miraculously intact cottage, nursing a slight shrapnel cut to her head.

Others are turning to something that was once forbidden in Mykolaiv during the first several months of the war in order to find comfort.

“Even in the early morning hours, I now notice a large number of individuals drinking. I disagree that the alcohol ban should have been lifted. It is inappropriate during a period of conflict, “said Gela Chavhavadze, proprietor of the café.

Residents in Mykolaiv said that they are holding on.
In many regions of Ukraine, heavy drinking is a problem and a fact of life. I once witnessed a loud, slurred quarrel between two older men at a café and a drunken soldier stumble up some steps in a hotel.

But Mykolaiv-based craft brewer Dmitro Voloshchenko argued that “I don’t think we have any more issues now than we did before the prohibition was lifted. If you can control your consumption, alcohol can be quite beneficial.”

Nobody doubts the physical and psychological harm that the nightly bombardments inflict on the approximately 250,000 residents of the city who remain today, out of a pre-war population of 500,000.

“It ruins our dreams and our sleep. It impairs people’s nervous systems and results in anxiety. It’s challenging. Every night I’m awakened by both explosions and phone calls. I have nightmares of the conflict and the devastation “Oleksandr Demianov, a trauma physician who has cared for many of the victims in the city, stated.

However, there are some individuals learning to enjoy the sound of explosions at night, though not in Mykolaiv itself.

Kherson, a neighbouring city 50 kilometres (30 miles) to the southeast, is occupied by Russia. However, employing brand-new Western artillery and missiles, Ukrainian forces have started targeting Russian positions close to the city in recent weeks.

“We rejoice if we hear an explosion because we know it indicates our forces are approaching us. We are awaiting our release “said Konstantin Ryzhenko, a free-lance journalist from Ukraine who has taken refuge in Kherson.

Russia accuses US of direct role in Ukraine war

russia
  • Russia accuses US of direct involvement in Ukraine conflict.
  • Moscow says US approving targets for American-made Himars artillery used by Ukrainian forces.
  • Russia has previously accused the US of conducting a “proxy war” in Ukraine. The BBC was unable to independently confirm this allegation.

For the first time, Russia has accused the United States of direct involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

According to a spokesperson for Moscow’s defence ministry, the US is approving targets for American-made Himars artillery used by Ukrainian forces.

Intercepted calls between Ukrainian officials, according to Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov, revealed the link. The BBC was unable to independently confirm this.

US officials made no immediate comment on the allegation.

Russia previously accused the US of conducting a “proxy war” in Ukraine.

“The Biden administration is directly responsible for all rocket attacks authorised by Kyiv on residential areas and civilian infrastructure facilities in Donbass and other regions that resulted in mass civilian deaths,” Mr Konashenkov said.

Himars is a multiple rocket system that can launch precision-guided missiles at targets up to 70 kilometres (45 miles) away – far beyond the range of Ukraine’s previous artillery.

They are also thought to be more accurate than their Russian counterparts.

In April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that US President Joe Biden’s decision to arm Ukraine with billions of dollars meant that “NATO, in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia through a proxy and is arming that proxy.”

“War means war,” said the 72-year-old.

Russia has been accused of numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout the Ukrainian conflict. Ukraine accused Moscow last week of bombing a prison in separatist-held Donetsk in order to cover up allegations of torture.

Furthermore, the BBC has documented allegations of torture and beatings of Ukrainian detainees by Russian military and security forces.

Fear and suspicion as Ukraine hunts for traitors in the east

  • As Ukraine searches for traitors, fears of Russian infiltration spread eastward. Sense of paranoia is strongest in eastern Ukraine, where suspicions of treason divide formerly occupied villages. In Kutuzivka, a 55-year-old farm owner was arrested and accused of collaborating with Russian soldiers.
  • Antonova’s case has sparked interest in Russia. According to the interior ministry, the National Police have detained over 1,000 people suspected of sabotage and reconnaissance on behalf of Russian authorities.
  • Some villagers claim Antonova is being unfairly targeted, demonstrating the complexities of such cases.

KUTUZIVKA, Ukraine – On July 28, As Ukraine searches for traitors, fears of Russian infiltration spread eastward, far from the capital.

The sense of paranoia is strongest in eastern Ukraine, where suspicions of treason committed by locals divide formerly occupied villages like Kutuzivka, a once-sleepy hamlet east of Kharkiv with visible signs of a recent Russian presence.

When Reuters visited the village at the end of May, Ukrainian troops were still fighting off a near-constant barrage of artillery fire from Russian troops north of the village.

When Russian troops arrived in Kutuzivka in early March, they quickly installed a puppet government.

Nataliia Kyrychenko, a 55-year-old village farm owner, was hiding in her house with several neighbours when Russian soldiers arrived. According to villagers, a Russian commander led Kyrychenko and her neighbours out onto the street and informed them that the village would now be led by a local woman named Nadiia Antonova.

Kyrychenko claimed that Russian forces interrogated her for two days about her son-in-law, who works in Ukrainian law enforcement. According to Kyrychenko, the soldiers told her that Antonova had informed them about her son-in-law and accused her of working as a spotter for Ukrainian troops, tasked with tracking Russian soldiers’ movements.

“I honestly didn’t think I’d come back when the Russian soldiers took me away,” she said. “I couldn’t believe someone in our neighbourhood would turn me in.”

Kyrychenko was eventually granted his release. Russian Kremlin officials did not respond to Reuters’ questions about the case.

Ukraine successfully pushed back Russian troops and liberated Kutuzivka in late April. Antonova was quickly detained and charged with collaborating with Russian soldiers. If convicted, she could spend more than a decade in prison. Antonova’s lawyer did not respond to questions from Reuters.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke earlier this month about the high cost of Russian infiltration on the country. There are many more cases that fall into the grey area below the highest levels of treason he highlighted. These cases can range from those who share pro-Russian content on social media to those who assist occupying Russian troops in any way.

“Our population played a very important role in informing police and alerting us to saboteurs,” Yevhen Yenin, the first deputy minister of the interior ministry, which oversees the national police, said.

Though the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is officially tasked with investigating such cases, Yenin claims that the police have done much of the practical work of gathering information.

According to the interior ministry, the National Police have detained over 1,000 people suspected of sabotage and reconnaissance on behalf of Russian authorities.

In late May, four police officers began their night patrol in Kharkiv, about 40 kilometres from the Russian border, shortly after the city’s curfew of 10 p.m. The officers scoured the city’s darkened streets for suspicious figures, brandishing AK-47s and wearing bulletproof vests.

“Whenever we stop someone, we try to figure out where they live, who they are, and whether or not they speak Ukrainian,” said Tymur, who declined to give his last name.

As an air raid siren wailed overhead, their car accelerated. The officers went underground to seek refuge in a subway station. They reappeared fifteen minutes later to patrol the deserted streets until dawn.

Antonova’s case has sparked interest in Russia. According to Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of Russian state television channel RT, Antonova assisted the Russian operation and is now being unfairly punished. “We need to save those who can be saved and reward those who deserve it,” Simonyan said.

Some villagers also claim Antonova is being unfairly targeted, demonstrating the complexities of such cases. They claim Antonova provided food for the villagers and protected them from mistreatment by Russian soldiers during the occupation.

“Can you call it collaboration when the Russians are putting their guns against her back?” exclaimed one resident outside a kindergarten where a dozen villagers still live underground.

However, regional prosecutor Oleksandr Filchakov stated that investigators had evidence Antonova provided information to the enemy that resulted in the deaths of Ukrainians. While acknowledging some villagers’ sympathies, Filchakov stated that Ukrainians needed justice.

“She must be held accountable,” he stated.
