Aleppo: A building collapsed on Sunday in Syria‘s war-torn second city of Aleppo, killing 16 people, including children, according to authorities and media.

Much of Aleppo was destroyed during Syria’s nearly 12-year conflict, leaving many of the remaining structures in disrepair.

According to Syria’s interior ministry, only one person was rescued alive from the rubble of the five-story building, which housed seven families.

It was unclear whether anyone else had survived the tragedy in the city that served as Syria’s pre-war commercial hub.

Earlier Sunday state agency gave an initial death toll of 10, which rose throughout the day as search operations continued.

A Kurdish news agency said five children were among the dead.

According to a war monitor, the victims included Syrians who had been displaced during the country’s years of fighting.

According to locals, the building housed approximately 35 people.

Video footage shared on state television showed dozens of rescue workers at the scene, with some digging into the grey rubble with their bare hands. Earthmovers scooped up the building materials, releasing dust into the air.

According to a police source, the building in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood collapsed “due to a water leak” in the foundations.

A war-damaged block of flats also crumbled in the city in February 2019, leaving 11 people dead with four children among them.
