Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced ex-lawyer, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife and children in a case that rocked the United States.

The hearing in South Carolina came one day after a jury convicted the 54-year-old in less than three hours.

On June 7, 2021, Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, were shot at close range on their family estate.

Authorities claimed he murdered his wife and son to draw attention away from his financial misdeeds and elicit sympathy.

Judge Clifton Newman termed the case “one of the most troubling” he has encountered and underlined Murdaugh’s past “as a well-known member of the legal community”.

Capital Sentence

“You’ve practiced law before me, and we’ve seen each other on various occasions throughout the years,” he said, calling it “especially heart-breaking for me” to learn of Murdaugh’s arrest and prosecution, more than a year after the murders were committed.

Alex Murdaugh led a legal dynasty that had established a dominant position for decades – the jurisdiction was dubbed “Murdaugh Country” by some.

Judge Newman said he understood the state’s decision not to seek the capital sentence, but that Murdaugh’s family had individuals executed for less.

“Your family, including you, have been prosecuting people here in this courtroom, and many have received the death penalty, probably for lesser conduct,” he said.

The disbarred attorney was convicted of two counts of murder after a six-week trial.

An appeal

Throughout the trial, investigators showed how Murdaugh stole nearly $9 million from clients to fuel his opioid addiction and opulent lifestyle.

Murdaugh spoke briefly twice during Friday’s sentencing to assert his innocence. His attorneys said he would file an appeal against the life sentence within 10 days.

Buster Murdaugh, Murdaugh’s surviving son, sat quiet and mute throughout the proceedings, even as the judge sentenced his father to two consecutive life sentences.

The court also speculated that the murders might have been committed while under the influence of drugs.

“It might not have been you, but it may have been the monster you became when you took those pills.”

Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said the evidence against the South Carolina lawyer was “overwhelming” and showed him to be a “cunning, manipulative man who placed himself above all others, including his family”.

Nonetheless, Murdaugh reiterated his argument that he was not guilty.

“I would never hurt my wife and I would never hurt my son,” he said in brief remarks at the hearing. He stared ahead and did not react as his sentence was read

A video made by Paul Murdaugh only minutes before he was shot contained his father’s voice in the background, contradicting his assertion that he was not present at the time.

A condemned juror told it was when he realized the defendant was guilty.

Murdaugh’s head has been shaved in a fresh mugshot provided by the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).

According to local media, male prisoners usually get a haircut when they arrive in prison.

According to the SCDC, he will spend the following 45 days in the intake process, when his medical and mental condition, as well as his educational level, will be assessed.

He will be transferred to a maximum-security prison after 45 days.

During a news conference following the sentence, Murdaugh’s lawyers stated that they did not believe it was a mistake for him to testify during the trial. They claimed Judge Newman’s decision to allow evidence linked to Murdaugh’s financial misdeeds to be included in the murder trial was “erroneous”.

The state’s case “was about character, not about motive”, defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said. Murdaugh had been cast as a “despicable human being”, he said.

The high-profile case has spurred true crime podcasts and documentaries across the country.

US shoots down Chinese spy balloon over ´unacceptable´ violation

WASHINGTON – A US fighter aircraft shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday, the Pentagon said, in response to Beijing’s “unacceptable violation” of US sovereignty.

President Joe Biden praised fighter pilots for bringing the balloon down in US airspace and above US territorial waters after it had been flying above the country for days.

“They successfully took it down. And I want to compliment our aviators who did it,” Biden told reporters in Maryland.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin called the operation a “deliberate and lawful action” that came in response to China´s “unacceptable violation of our sovereignty,” he said.

The action occurred Saturday afternoon, following the temporary closure of three southeastern airports as part of a “national security endeavor,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The balloon looked to be descending vertically to the water in footage carried on US television networks.

Officials in the United States were originally hesitant to shoot down the device, afraid that it may injure people and damage property on the ground.

When asked about the incident earlier in the day on Saturday, Biden pledged to “take care” of it.

As soon as possible

Biden told reporters Saturday he had initially ordered the military on Wednesday to shoot down the craft “as soon as possible.”

“They decided — without doing damage to anyone on the ground… that the best time to do that was as it got over water,” Biden said.

The controversy erupted Thursday when American officials said they were tracking a large Chinese “surveillance balloon” in US skies.

As a result, Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a rare trip to Beijing intended to defuse increasing US-China tensions on Friday.

After some reluctance, Beijing recognized possession of the “airship,” but claimed it was a weather balloon that had been blown off course, and expressed regret for the incident.

“The airship is from China. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes,” China´s foreign ministry said in a statement Friday.

“The Chinese side regrets the unintended entry of the airship into US airspace due to force majeure,” it said, using the legal term for an act outside of human control.

The balloon had sailed over portions of the northwestern United States, notably Montana, which are home to key airbases and strategic nuclear weapons in underground silos, heightening fears.

A sheriff in York County, South Carolina, cautioned residents not to try to shoot down the plane.

“Yes, there are reports that the Chinese balloon is flying over our area at the moment,” said a post on the Twitter account of Sheriff Kevin Tolson.

“It´s flying at 60,000+ feet. Don´t try to shoot it!! Your rifle rounds WILL NOT reach it. Be responsible. What goes up will come down, including your bullets.”

The balloon was apparently flying at a height considerably above that of commercial airliners, while several private pilots complained on social media that it was too close.

The Pentagon announced Friday that another suspected Chinese surveillance balloon was detected over Latin America, but did not specify where it was seen.

Trump’s 2024 campaign currently has a new appearance

As some have suspected, Donald Trump’s announcement that he will run for president of the United States in 2024 was not a prank or a scheme to evade prison. He is traveling and creating the kind of foundation required for a real effort to retake the White House.

The former president made his first campaign appearance outside of Florida on Saturday, nearly three months after announcing his bid.

He addressed a Republican Party gathering in New Hampshire and declared the departing state party chair would serve as a key campaign adviser. He also earned the support of Senator Lindsey Graham and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster at the statehouse in Columbia.

The latter, a Trump ally who showed some disenchantment following the violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is now firmly back in the fold.

How often have you heard the statement, “We like Trump’s policies, but we want someone new?” Mr. Graham questioned the audience. “Without Donald Trump, there would be no Trump policies. I was present.”

Once more, Mr. Trump disputed his loss in the 2020 election and assured his followers that he would be the most successful contender for the Republican Party in 2024, unlike any potential rivals.

He declared from the main hall of the state capitol, “To alter the whole system, you need a president who can take on the whole system and a president who can win.

In both appearances, Mr. Trump bragged about his accomplishments as president and criticized President Joe Biden’s record on crime, immigration, and the economy.

The four biggest legal issues facing Trump

Todd Gerhardt, a Charleston-area Republican district executive committee member, was selling honey in plastic bottles styled like Donald Trump across the street.

Mr. Gerhardt organized a 2016 rally for Mr. Trump on opulent Kiawah Island in South Carolina and most recently paid a visit to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate for a fundraiser and to donate his honey for the campaign’s goodie bags. Mr. Gerhardt was an early supporter of Mr. Trump’s first presidential campaign.

He downplayed worries that Republican voters in South Carolina and elsewhere in the country would be seeking for a new nominee this time around, claiming that Mar-a-Lago had a joyful environment as the Trump team prepared for the next fight.

According to Gerhardt, “Trump has actually done it when people talk about other candidates running and they say I’m going to do this or I’m going to do that. He is using all of the oxygen in the space.

 

However, earlier in the day, at a street market a few streets from the capital, Mr. Trump’s visit to Columbia didn’t seem to make much of an impression. A customer at a nearby coffee shop complained that it was improper for the former president to host a campaign rally on state property, but the majority of people there were unaware that he was in town.

Another local remarked, “There doesn’t seem to be the same enthusiasm for Trump this time around.”

It’s no accident that South Carolina and New Hampshire were the first two destinations on Mr. Trump’s third presidential campaign tour. The two states may end up being crucial to Mr. Trump’s plan to win back the White House.

Although Mr. Trump placed third there in 2016, the evangelical Christians who control the state’s Republican electorate may be considering other candidates, such as former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Iowa is the first state to hold a Republican presidential nomination contest in 2024.

But Mr. Trump received a one-two punch from New Hampshire and South Carolina in 2016 that propelled him to the lead, which he never gave up.

The same thing is possible in 2024. In reality, South Carolina is distinct among the conventional early voting states in that every Republican presidential contender since 1980 has won the state’s primary.

But this time, South Carolina might present Mr. Trump with a special challenge. Senator Tim Scott and former governor Nikki Haley of the state could both run against him.

If this is a turning point for Mr. Trump, it comes as polls are beginning to stabilize in his favor following the Republican Party’s poor performance in the November midterm congressional elections.

A recent Emerson Poll revealed that 55% of Republican voters supported Mr. Trump, far more than the 29% who supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has not declared his candidacy but is seen as the former president’s most competitive opponent. In a December Monmouth poll, Mr. DeSantis was in the lead.

After his followers attacked the US Capitol building earlier this week, Meta suspended Mr. Trump’s accounts. This week, Meta declared that it was lifting the suspension. Even if the former president hasn’t started posting again, his reappearance might present another another chance for voter outreach and funding as his still-sparsely staffed campaign prepares for its 2024 bid.

If Mr. Trump’s previous presidential campaigns were fueled by rallies and Facebook donations, his stop in South Carolina was a different kind of operation.

It was a much more low-key affair than his usual arena gatherings with their carnival vibe, with barely 300 announced guests. It was more common to see sport jackets and gowns than “Make America Great Again” clothing.

However, Mr. Trump will need the backing of both his rally-goers and the political rank-and-file in places like New Hampshire and South Carolina to win a third Republican presidential nomination. While Mr. Trump continues to perform well in national surveys, nearly half of Republican voters in a recent South Carolina poll said they would choose “someone else” over Mr. Trump.

However, the name “someone else” won’t be on the primary ballot. And since he is still the only declared contender with just over a year until voting begins, Donald Trump is experimenting with various approaches to make his case.
