Elections: DROs, ROs entrusted with powers of Magistrates

ISLAMABAD: The preparations of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the general elections in the country have entered the final stages.

The ECP has delegated the powers of Magistrates to District Returning Officers(DROs) and Returning Officers(ROs) for general elections.

The Election Commission has also issued a notification on giving powers to DROs and ROs.

Earlier,  the Ministry of Interior issued a notification for the deployment of the Army, Civil Armed Forces during the general elections.

According to the notification, Army and Civil Armed Forces will be deployed as Quick Response Force for security, this deployment will be from  February 5 to 12 2024.

Besides, the Election Commission has issued the code of conduct for the elections of Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces.

According to the code of conduct, the police will be the first and the civil armed forces and the Pakistan Army will be responsible for the secondary and intermediate level, the Pakistan Army will be outside the most sensitive polling stations only.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has imposed a ban on the transfer posting of Deputy Commissioners(DC) and Additional Deputy Commissioners(ADC) across the country.

The Election Commission has issued a statement in this regard, in which it has been said that the ECP has assigned the responsibilities to the DCs and ADCs in the general elections.

According to the announcement, the Election Commission has banned transfer posting due to the appointment of District Returning Officers(DROs), Returning Officers(ROs), and Assistant Returning Officers(ARO) related to the elections.

The Election Commission has issued a letter to the Secretary Establishment and the four Chief Secretaries.

It should be noted that the Election Commission has fixed the date of general elections on February 8 across the country for which the list of constituencies has also been released.

ECP approves appointment of DROs, ROs for general elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has approved the appointment of District Returning Officers (DROs) and Returning Officers (ROs) for upcoming general elections.

ECP sources said approval has been given for the deployment of 142 DROs and 859 ROs across the country. The appointment was approved in a meeting presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner.

In this regard, the Election Commission is likely to issue a notification soon. The list of appointments of officers was sent to the Commission by the authorities.

Sources said that regarding the general elections, the Election Commission has prepared a training schedule for the officers. ROs will be trained for 3 days from December  13 to 15, 2023.

Returning officers will be given selective training at the divisional level. The election training material has been sent to the divisional office.

The ECP officials will give training to the returning officers.

General Elections 2024: ECP starts printing of nomination papers

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) has started the printing of nomination papers in connection with the preparations for the general elections.

Sources connected with the Election Commission said that the ECP is printing the nomination papers from the Printing Corporation and the papers will be delivered to the District Returning Officers(DROs) before the election schedule.

According to the sources, nomination papers will be given more on the demand of the returning officers, the commission will give nomination papers of the candidates in proportion to the total voters of the district while there will be white colored nomination papers for general, reserved seats for women and minorities.

It should be remembered that the ECP has fixed the date of February 8, 2024 to hold general elections in the country after meeting with President Arif Alvi on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission has started formal preparations in this regard. It has prepared lists of polling staff including polling stations.

A few days ago, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja met Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar and issued a statement.

According to the announcement, the Chief Election Commissioner informed the Caretaker Prime Minister about the preparations for the elections. He said that the lists of polling stations and staff have been prepared and the work of printing the election materials and the work of updating the election lists is also in the final stages.

The Chief Election Commissioner invited the Caretaker Prime Minister to visit the Election Commission to review the preparations for the general elections.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to investigate the service record of the officers and officials with the best reputation will be appointed District Returning Officers (DROs) and Returning Officers (RO).

The preparations for the general elections 2024 are underway and ECP has decided to check service records of the officers.

Sources in the Election Commission have said that the officers with the best reputation will be appointed as DROs and ROs. The service records of the selected officers will be checked thoroughly.

Sources said that the ECP has changed the rules for the appointment of DROs and ROs and the election regulatory body has decided to check the service record of the officers before appointing them as DROs and ROs.

Sources said that along with the list of administrative officers, the service record has also been made mandatory to be sent to the Election Commission, while it has also been made mandatory for DROs and ROs to be officers of the best reputation.

Sources said that an officer of grade 18 or above will be appointed as a DRO and the retirement period of the officer should be at least one year before the appointment of DRO.

The returning officers must be at least Grade 17 officers and the officer concerned should have completed at least one year of retirement before posting the posts.

The Election Commission said that DROs have been taken from the bureaucracy while 297 ROs have also been appointed for elections in Punjab.

According to the Election Commission, the AROs have also been taken from the bureaucracy by the Election Commission and a total 594 AROs have also been appointed for the elections in Punjab.

The Election Commission also appointed ROs for women and minority seats, in this regard Saeed Gul was appointed as RO for women and minority seats.
