6,801 polling stations declared highly sensitive in Sindh

KARACHI:  Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar chaired the 30th provincial Apex Committee meeting at CM House to review election arrangements and national action plan tasks.

During the Apex committee meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the arrangements for the upcoming election.

The committee was informed that there would be a total of 19,008 polling stations, including 5,657 normal, 6,550 sensitive, and 6,801 highly sensitive ones.

IG Police Riffat Mukhtar shared the police deployment criteria, stating that four police personnel would be deployed at a normal polling station, five at a sensitive one, and seven at a highly sensitive polling station.

A total of 143,156 police personnel would be deployed at the polling stations, including 95,400 at the normal polling stations, 10,648 in the QRF Police, and 37,108 in the Auxiliary Force.

Additionally, the Rangers and Army would be deployed for QRF duties at selected highly sensitive polling stations, in addition to the police force.

Corps Commander Karachi Lt. Gen. Babar Iftikhar informed the Chief Minister that army troops had been dispatched all over the province to serve as the third tier during the general elections.

The Chief Minister expressed his satisfaction with the election arrangements and mentioned that he had personally visited the divisional headquarters of the province to review the arrangements.

The regional election commissioners present at the meeting also expressed their satisfaction with all the arrangements, including security ones.

The CM pointed out that in November 2023 the situation of street crime was disturbed, On average 265 per day street crimes were reported, 15 Madadgar responses were slow (more than 10 mins), Police Vehicles were in dismal condition, and Organized crime was unchecked.

ECP declares 50% polling stations sensitive or highly sensitive

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared as many as 50 percent of the polling stations across the country for general elections which will be held on February 8 as sensitive or highly sensitive.

The ECP had established as around 90,675 polling stations across the country out of which 46,065 polling stations have been declared as ‘sensitive’ or ‘most sensitive’ while 27,628 polling stations as sensitive and 18,437 as most sensitive,” sources in the ECP said.

In Punjab, around 6,040 highly sensitive, 12, 580 polling stations are declared sensitive while 6,524 polling stations in Sindh are highly sensitive and 6545 are declared sensitive.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 4,143 polling stations were declared as highly sensitive and 6,166 polling stations were declared as sensitive.

Likewise, in Balochistan, out of 5,028 polling stations, only 961 were declared normal as 1,730 polling stations were highly sensitive, and 2,337 polling stations were declared sensitive.

KARACHI: An important meeting regarding Local Government (LG) elections in 16 districts of Karachi and Hyderabad divisions held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Sindh Dr Muhammad Sohail Rajput at Sindh Secretariat on Thursday.

Provincial Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, Home Secretary Saeed Ahmed Mangrejo, IGP Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho participated while commissioner Hyderabad and concerned DCs participated via through video link. The meeting reviewed security and other arrangements for the second phase of local body elections in the province.

Speaking at the meeting, Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput said that elections will be held at 4995 polling stations in Karachi and 3971 polling stations in Hyderabad and CCTV cameras will be installed at 1675 polling stations in Karachi and 1015 highly sensitive polling stations in Hyderabad division.

The Chief Secretary Sindh directed Commissioner Karachi and Commissioner Hyderabad to ensure arrangements at all polling stations. “Sindh Government is creating an environment of peace for the transparent, fair and secure general elections in the light of directives and recommendations of the Election Commission of Pakistan”.

He said. In the meeting, Provincial Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan said that local body elections will be held in Karachi and Hyderabad Division on 15th January. In the meeting, Inspector General Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon said that a security plan has been prepared for the local elections. He said that 38,233 in Karachi and 24,000 policemen in Hyderabad will perform security duties.

In the meeting, all the Deputy Commissioners also gave a briefing on the security and transport plan of the respective districts and the overall situation of the polling stations.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has organized PP-84 by-election (Punjab Assembly Seat) in Khushab, for which the process of polling is underway.

According to the details, the residents of Khushab in Punjab’s Sargodha district are exercising their right to vote for their preferred candidate for the seat that was left vacant after the death of PML-N MPA Malik Muhammad Waris Kallu, who died on March 12 from COVID-19.

The ECP has established 229 polling stations, including 666 polling booths — 344 for male and 322 for female voters. The total registered voters amount to 292,687 of which 155,104 are male and 137,583 female.

Muhammad Moazam of the PML-N, Ali Hussain of the PTI, Ghulam Habib of the PPP, and a candidate of the TLP are in the fray.

The Government has formed 10 teams that will monitor the electoral process to the announcement of the results.

The security officials deployed on the polling stations have been strictly directed to ensure security and smooth conduct of elections throughout the constituency and safe delivery of ballot boxes and other election materials at the polling booths.
