Death toll from cyclone Freddy climbs to 190 in Malawi

Malawi
  • 190 people were killed when Tropical Cyclone Freddy blasted through southern Malawi.
  • Across the country, at least 584 people have been hurt, and 37 have gone missing.
  • “The threat of heavy flooding and damaging winds remains very high.”

Local officials confirmed Tuesday that at least 190 people were killed when Tropical Cyclone Freddy blasted through southern Malawi, while survivors searched for loved ones in severely damaged districts.

Across the country, at least 584 people have been hurt, and 37 have gone missing.

The Malawi Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change said Tuesday the cyclone is “weakening but will continue to cause torrential rains associated with windy conditions in most parts of Southern Malawi districts.”

“The threat of heavy flooding and damaging winds remains very high,” the report added.

Charles Kalemba, a commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, told on Tuesday that the situation in southern Malawi has deteriorated.

“It’s worse today. A number of places are flooding and a number of roads and bridges are cut. Visibility is almost zero. Electricity is off and also network is a problem. It’s becoming more and more dire,” Kalemba said, adding that rescue operations have also been affected by poor weather.

“It’s tough. We need to use machinery (for rescue operations) but machines cannot go to places where they were supposed to excavate because of the rains,” Kalemba added.

Malawi’s Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services warned Monday that “the threat of damaging winds and heavy flooding remains very high.”

Kalemba added that an improvement in weather is expected from Wednesday. “Possibly by tomorrow, the cyclone may have passed. We are hoping to see improvement from tomorrow but today is worse. There are heavy rains and lots of water.”

‘I don’t know what to do now’

One of the severely devastated regions is Chilobwe, a community in the southern metropolis of Blantyre.

On Sunday night, the community, which is located below a hill, witnessed water flowing down. Officials claim over 30 people have perished in the region, and dozens more are still missing as search and rescue attempts continue.

Dorothy Wachepa, 39, was sleeping when she heard a loud bang that sounded like an aeroplane.

“It was around 12 and I heard the sound accompanied by shouting from people upland,” the mother of four told.

What followed was a torrent of muddy water accompanied by rocks and trees sliding down the mountain. All her possessions were washed away.

“Everything is gone. I (had) a small-scale business selling vegetables because my husband died in 2014. I’ve been supporting the children from the little that I have,” she added.

Wachepa and her children were lucky to escape the house alive, she claimed. The cyclone-induced torrential rains killed nine individuals, including Wachepa’s neighbour and some local youngsters.

On Monday, people were spotted searching for survivors in the wreckage with shovels and even their bare hands.

Sarah Chinangwa, 25, could not hold back her emotions as she described the deaths of six of her loved ones on Sunday night.

“My brother and his two children were asleep when the water came. I live close to them, and I tried to shout for them to come out,” she said.

“They came out and stood at a rock which was at a higher place, but moments later they were all washed away,” she said, adding that her own house was washed away. “I don’t know what to do now.”

According to the National Institute of Disaster Risk Management, at least ten persons were killed and thirteen were injured in Mozambique’s Zambezia region.

By making landfall in Mozambique for the second time, more than two weeks after the first, the devastating cyclone has smashed records for the longest-lasting storm of its kind.

More than 22,000 people have been displaced by the tropical storm, according to Radio Mozambique.

“It’s quite likely that number will go up,” Guy Taylor, chief of advocacy, communications and partnerships for UNICEF in Mozambique, told on Tuesday.

“The size or the strength of the storm was much higher than the last time … the impact in terms of damage and the impact on people’s lives has been more substantial,” he said.

Vijayendra Prasad responds to RRR bringing India its first Oscar ever

RRR
  • Writer-filmmaker Vijayendra Prasad, who had written the story of SS Rajamouli-directed RRR, feels a single Oscar win.
  • On Monday, Naatu Naatu from RRR became the first song from an Indian production to bag an Oscar.
  • Also read:At the 2023 Oscars on March 12, Naatu Naatu was performed live and the performance earned a standing ovation.

One Oscar triumph shouldn’t be seen as the pinnacle, according to writer-director Vijayendra Prasad, who wrote the script for the SS Rajamouli-directed film RRR. This is because there are so many other categories for the Academy Awards. Naatu Naatu from RRR made history on Monday by becoming the first song from an Indian production to win an Oscar. Read further:

Naatu Naatu was sung live at the 2023 Oscars on March 12 (March 13 in India), and the performance received a standing ovation. A cheer went up every time actor Deepika Padukone stated Naatu Naatu or RRR as she introduced the performance.

Prasad discussed his reaction to RRR giving India its first-ever Oscar in an interview with Asianet Telugu. He responded, “This is not the pinnacle,” when asked if winning the Oscar was the ultimate recognition. The Academy Awards have a huge number of categories. Take a look at the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, which received 11 nominations. Several categories it won in. As hard as they work, so must we. Other categories should be our (Indian cinema’s) focus as well.

“We’re blessed that RRR movie is the first feature film to bring INDIA’s first ever Oscar in the Best Song Category with Naatu Naatu,” said a tweet from the official RRR Twitter account following the historic victory at the Oscars. This bizarre situation is beyond words to convey. (emoticon of hands folded) I dedicate this to all of our incredible global followers. MANY THANKS! (emoticons with red hearts) JAI HIND! Composer MM Keeravani made the following statement in his acceptance speech after receiving the Oscar for Naatu Naatu: “There was only one wish on my mind…RRR has to win…the pride of every Indian…and it must place me on top of the globe.”

Naatu Naatu rose to prominence over the past several months on a global scale. The song got the crowds dancing in the aisles and cheering at all of its most recent screenings in the US and other nations. The fictional story RRR, which was released in theaters last March, is set in the 1920s, just before independence. When they unite to take on British officials, RRR follows two characters who are loosely inspired on the real-life Telugu revolutionary figures Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan).

Myanmar: 22 people were killed in a monastery attack

Myanmar
  • At least 22 people were slain at a monastery in Mayanmar’s Southern Shan State.
  • There was a savage military crackdown on pro-democracy protestors.
  • At least 2,900 individuals have been killed by junta soldiers in Myanmar since the coup.

On Saturday, at least 22 people were slain at a monastery in Myanmar‘s Southern Shan State, including three monks, while local rebel groups and the military-backed junta accused each other of carrying out a massacre.

Myanmar has been embroiled in political turmoil since military commander Min Aung Hlaing seized power in a coup in 2021, shattering any prospect that the Southeast Asian country of 55 million people would become a functioning democracy.

After the coup, there was a savage military crackdown on pro-democracy protestors, with citizens being slain in the street, abducted in nocturnal raids, and allegedly tortured in jail.

According to the advocacy group Aid Group for Political Prisoners, at least 2,900 individuals have been killed by junta soldiers in Myanmar since the coup, and over 17,500 have been jailed, the bulk of whom are still detained (AAPP).

The coup has also led in an increase in bloodshed between the military and a slew of resistance organisations aligned with long-established ethnic militias in a country plagued by insurgencies for decades.

Opposition organisations have regularly accused Myanmar’s military of carrying out mass executions, air strikes, and war crimes against civilians in conflict zones, claims the junta rejects despite mounting proof.

The newest atrocity claim surfaced last week in Shan State, Myanmar’s isolated and hilly northeastern region bordered by China, Laos, and Thailand.

At least 21 dead were piled up outside the Nan Nein Monastery, which is located in the village of Nan Nein in Pinlaung Township, according to photos and video released by the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF).

Several were observed wearing civilian clothing and suffering from multiple bullet wounds. There were also three bodies clothed in saffron orange robes, which Buddhist monks normally wear.

Bullet holes could be seen on the monastery’s walls in the footage given by the organisation.

The dead were observed lined up and slumped against the walls of the monastery, with pools of blood on the ground.

Both the KNDF and Myanmar’s military agree that combat occurred in the region, but two opposing narratives have developed in the aftermath of the monastery massacre.

“On March 11, the Burmese military killed three monks and 19 civilians,” KNDF spokesperson Philip Soe Aung told. “On March 12, our forces arrived at the monastery and discovered the bodies.”

This week, fierce combat erupted between local rebel groups and Myanmar’s military in an area near Nan Nein Village.

The military shelled and launched airstrikes directly at the village, causing inhabitants to seek cover in a neighbouring monastery, according to Soe Aung.

Myanmar’s junta spokesperson, Major General Zaw Min Tun, denied the military was to blame.

In comments published on Tuesday by the state-run newspaper Global Light of Myanmar, he blamed the violence at the monastery on “terrorist groups,” naming the Karen National Police Force (KNPF), the People’s Defence Force (PDF), and the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), an administration uniting ethnic groups in the state.

Zaw Min Tun claimed fighters opened fire after “the Tatmadaw (cooperated) with the local people’s militia and took security measures for the region.”

“When the terrorist groups violently opened fire… some villagers were killed and injured. (Others) ran away.”

Romanian court rejects Andrew Tate’s bail application

Andrew Tate
  • Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have been detained.
  • Judges have disagreed, citing the anticipated risk of Mr. Tate escaping the country.
  • The request for bail in lieu of custody was fresh, but the court’s decision was the same.

Andrew Tate‘s latest bail application was rejected by a Romanian court.

Since December, the notorious British social media star and his brother Tristan have been detained.

They are being probed on rape, people trafficking, and establishing organized crime group allegations. Both men have denied any misconduct.

The ruling was “disappointing,” according to Mr. Tate’s spokesman, and his legal team plans to appeal.

Mr. Tate’s lawyers have long contended that putting him in preventative detention is needlessly harsh, especially when alternative legal options, such as home arrest, are available.

Anticipation

So far, judges have disagreed, citing the anticipated risk of Mr. Tate escaping the country, influencing witnesses or evidence, or disrupting public order if he is released.

The request for bail in lieu of custody was fresh, but the court’s decision was the same.

Mr. Tate was ordered to remain in detention until March 29 by the court in late February.

Mr. Tate’s brother Tristan will also seek for bail in a separate hearing on Wednesday.

An appeals court this month invalidated all but one of the reasons for Tristan Tate’s imprisonment.

There have been no charges filed against the brothers or their two Romanian colleagues who were arrested alongside them.

Mr. Tate, a former kickboxer, was kicked from the British TV show Big Brother in 2016 after a video surfaced showing him allegedly assaulting a woman.

He went on to become well-known online, with Twitter banning him for claiming that women should “carry responsibility” for sexual assault. He was later reinstated.

Despite social media bans, he rose to prominence, particularly among young males, by preaching a hyper-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle.

Oscars: Ram Charan, Jr NTR didn’t feel comfortable performing Naatu Naatu on stage

Naatu Naatu
  • Actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR were supposed to perform the Naatu Naatu song from RRR live at the 95th Academy Awards.
  • Raj was one of the producers at the Oscars awards ceremony.
  • He said that both of the actors backed out for multiple reasons with one of them .

According to Raj Kapoor, the Naatu Naatu song from RRR was meant to be performed live by actors Ram Charan and Jr. NTR at the 95th Academy Awards. At the Oscars ceremony, Raj was one of the producers. He claimed that the two actors pulled out for a variety of reasons, one of which being that they did not feel secure enough to execute the dance live on stage.
Originally, the idea was to have Ram Charan and Jr. NTR perform on stage with a legion of dancers as the song’s original vocalists, Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, sang live. A group of dancers at the ceremony joined the vocalists on stage.

Raj stated in an interview with The Academy that the two leads and singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava were originally intended to be the stars of the song. The performance was incredibly helpful in getting their crew working permits so they could travel to the US and take part in the performance. We conducted late-night Zoom calls with the choreography crew in Mumbai and Los Angeles after MM Keeravaani approved the musical cut. With the Indian team, we discussed casting decisions, ideas for costume design, and stage designs.

Furthermore, he said, “We learned that Ram Charan and NT Rama Rao Jr. would be attending the Oscars in late February, but they didn’t feel comfortable performing.

Raj added, ” “The original song took two months to workshop, practice, and record over a 15-day period. Professional dancers worked on the Naatu Naatu performance for the Oscars in Los Angeles for a total of 18 hours of rehearsal time and one 90-minute camera blocking.”

Rahul and Kaala Bhairava performed Naatu Naatu during the Oscars event. the. to the to the., to, Pat Nub.. Nu. to the Nub. lygs to the nub. to each individual. The first Indian production ever to win an Oscar’s song was Naatu Naatu. RRR, a work of fiction by SS Rajamouli, is based on the lives of two genuine heroes and well-known revolutionaries and is set in the pre-independent 1920s.

The secret to Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid’s continued success as a long-distance couple after all these years was revealed.

The 58-year-old actress gushed about McDaid during an interview with Drew Barrymore on her talk show, particularly because he came to her Walk of Fame celebration.

“Yes, it was really lovely. He arrived by plane from London, where he resides “She spoke.

The Friends star responded to Barrymore’s remark that she finds those kinds of romances challenging by stating, “Wherever you are, I believe it makes no difference as long as you have trust. You can be who you are and still be thrilled to see each other.”

When McDaid was away during the COVID-19 lockdown and they were unable to see one another for a while, their friendship was put to the test. She told People, “I’ve realized that love is precious. “As I’ve aged, I’ve come to understand that.”

The singer is “a great listener,” Cox said as she proceeded to praise him.

And I’ve never encountered a more patient person, she added. “He has great counsel to offer. I adore his goals and heart. His values. He is a poet and a writer in addition to being incredibly talented and clearly musical. He’s just so intelligent, and I think that’s very alluring. And then he looks stunning.”

Russia pilots careless in drone collision, US says

Russia
  • The United States has accused Russia of irresponsible behaviour.
  • American drone plunged into the Black Sea after colliding with Russian fighter planes.
  • Russia has denied any touch between its two Su-27 fighter fighters.

The United States has accused Russia of irresponsible behaviour after an American drone plunged into the Black Sea after colliding with Russian fighter planes.

Russian planes are reported to have thrown gasoline into the path of the drone, which the US claims was in international airspace at the time of the accident.

The US brought down the damaged MQ-9 Reaper drone when it became “unflyable,” according to the Military.

Russia has denied any touch between its two Su-27 fighter fighters.

The main question is whether the encounter was simply an attempt by Russia to interrupt the American drone’s job or a purposeful attempt to bring it down.

According to US military authorities, the event occurred on Tuesday about 07:03 Central European Time (06:03 GMT) and lasted approximately 30-40 minutes.

The fighter planes dropped gasoline on the drone many times before the crash in a “reckless, ecologically unsound, and unprofessional way,” according to a statement.

According to a spokesperson Brig Gen Pat Ryder, the drone was “unflyable and unmanageable, therefore we pulled it down,” and the impact likely damaged the Russian aircraft.

He stated that the planes were able to land after the event.

Reaper drones are surveillance aircraft with a wingspan of 20m (66ft).

According to Brig Gen Ryder, the Russians have not retrieved the drone.

The United States’ National Security Council’s John Kirby told: “Without getting into too much detail, what I can say is that we’ve taken steps to protect our equities with respect to that particular drone.”

According to Russia’s defence ministry, the drone crashed after a “sharp manoeuvre” and was flying with its transponders switched off. Transponders are communication devices that enable the aircraft to be tracked.

Prof Michael Clarke, visiting professor in war studies at King’s College, told that the collision was “almost certainly an accident”.

The ex-director general of the defence and security think tank Royal United Services Institute said: “I don’t believe any pilot could deliberately do that [only colliding with another aircraft’s propeller] without seriously endangering their aircraft and own life.”

The event shows the growing danger of a direct confrontation between Russia and the United States over the Ukrainian conflict.

To protest the move, the United States summoned Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov to Washington.

During the discussion, Russian state media cited Mr Antonov as stating that Moscow considered the drone incident as “a provocation” and that “the unacceptable activity of the US military in the close proximity to our borders is a cause for concern”.

After Russia’s takeover of Crimea in 2014, tensions have increased over the Black Sea.

With Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, the United States and the United Kingdom have increased reconnaissance and surveillance planes, always flying in international airspace.

According to the US, there has been a “pattern of dangerous actions by Russian pilots” interacting with allied aircraft in the region.

This suggests that the drone’s downing might have been caused by a mistake made by a Russian pilot who came too near when they “buzzed” the drone.

Nevertheless, if this was a planned strike on a US aircraft by a Russian warplane, observers believe it would be a tremendous provocation and a significant escalation.

In such situation, the strike would be interpreted as an attempt by the Kremlin to put the US reaction to the test.

Western allies have worked hard to prevent the Ukrainian conflict from turning into a direct confrontation with Russia. Yet that is all that happened over the Black Sea. The United States must now assess its reaction.

As US military chiefs cautioned in their statement, this was a risky conduct that “could lead to miscalculation and unintended escalation”.

  • Jr NTR also said that the Oscar win could not have been possible without the love from the audience and the film industry.
  • Jr NTR said, “Seeing MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose accepting the Oscar was the best moment.”

The actor Jr. NTR discussed his “favorite moment” from the 95th Academy Awards on his flight back to Hyderabad on Wednesday. Jr. NTR added that the support of the public and the film industry were essential to the Oscar victory.

The actor was captured on camera speaking to reporters outside the Hyderabad airport while wearing a black sweatshirt, jeans, and a cap in a number of photographs and videos that circulated online. The best moment, according to Jr. NTR, was watching MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose get their Oscars.

He continued, “I feel terrific, and RRR makes me very pleased. I want to thank each and every Indian for their support of our movie. Only because of the support we received from the global public and the film community did we win this prize. Actors Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, director SS Rajamouli, singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, and the composer were all present for the significant occasion.
This RRR mass song is the ideal dance craze thanks to MM Keeravani’s poetic music, the energetic performances of Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, the original choreography of Prem Rakshith, and the words of Chandrabose.

The song competed against Applause from the film Tell It Like A Woman, Hold My Hand from the movie Top Gun: Maverick, Raise me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and This Is Life from ‘Everything, Everywhere All At Once.

The fictional story RRR is based on the experiences of Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem, two Telugu liberation warriors. The film, starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, grossed more than 1,200 crore internationally. The movie also featured Shriya Saran, Alia Bhatt, and Ajay Devgn.

Dia Mirza recounts approaching ‘friend’ Rajkumar Hirani for Sanju

Dia Mirza
  • Dia told Indian Express in an interview, When we become actors, we sign a bond of heartache.
  • Dia also said that she called up Rajkumar Hirani and urged him to cast her in his biopic on Sanjay Dutt – Sanju.
  • She was previously seen in Anubhav’s Thappad alongside Taapsee Pannu.

A decision to become an actor is like “signing a bond for misery,” according to Dia Mirza. She added that she had pleaded with director Rajkumar Hirani to include her in his Ranbir Kapoor-starring film. Sanju
In addition to Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Kapur, and Bhumi Pednekar, Dia is currently promoting her latest movie, Bheed. Anubhav Sinha is the director of the movie. She was previously featured in Anubhav’s Thappad opposite Taapsee Pannu.

Dia stated in an interview with Indian Express that “we sign a bond of grief when we become performers. Heartbreak occurs when your stories fail to connect with readers, producers, or both. Heartbreak also occurs when you are forced to wait for an eternity for someone to assign you work. It is very difficult. A successful film may lead artists to hope that it will bring in additional work for them, but this is not always the case, she added.

Dia added that she called Rajkumar Hirani and pleaded with him to include her in the cast of Sanjay Dutt’s biography, Sanju. “Sanju for me was oxygen. I actually required it. I recall that Raju is a buddy, therefore I called a friend for the first time in my professional career and stated,

She added that she never made a call to a friend for work before Sanju since she was always nervous and insecure about doing so. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I haven’t gotten other gigs; maybe it requires you calling the director and saying, “I want to work with you.”

Dia appeared in a number of movies in the early 2000s after making her acting debut in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein in 2001, which starred R Madhavan and Saif Ali Khan. She made a comeback as a well-known face in the industry with the 2018 movie Sanju. Since then, she has worked on the online series Kaafir and Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad.

Priyanka Chopra questioned to SRK why he doesn’t want to be in Hollywood?

Priyanka Chopra
  • Priyanka Chopra recently opined about Shah Rukh Khan’s comment about not moving to Hollywood.
  • She will be next seen in Russo Brothers’ upcoming spy-thriller web series Citadel.
  • Priyanka went on to say that her ego isn’t bigger than the job.

Shah Rukh Khan’s recent remark about not relocating to Hollywood drew the opinion of actor Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka answered to the same and stated that she doesn’t require confirmation because her ego isn’t bigger than her job. Priyanka is seen dabbling in both East and West productions. Together, Priyanka and Shah Rukh have appeared in movies including Don and Don 2.

After making her acting debut in 2002, Priyanka Chopra traveled to Hollywood approximately eight years ago. She rose to fame in the West after appearing in the television series Quantico. She made her film debut with Dwayne Johnson in Baywatch in 2017 and quickly gained notoriety. She will soon be featured in Citadel, a spy-thriller web series by Russo Brothers.

Priyanka was questioned about Shah Rukh Khan’s recent statement about why he doesn’t want to be in a Hollywood film as the series was being promoted. The question was posed to Priyanka by a reporter at the SXSW festival: “Shah Rukh Khan responds, ‘Why should I go there (Hollywood), I am comfortable here.'” In answer, Indian Express cited the Citadel actor as, “Comfortable is dull to me. I am confident, not conceited. When I enter a set, I am confident in what I am doing. I don’t require executive approval. I’m ready to work and I’m ready to take auditions. I don’t bring with me the burden of my accomplishment in one nation when I enter another.”

The next thing Priyanka said was that her ego wasn’t bigger than her job. “If you ask the people around me, I am recognized for being highly professional. I’m proud of it. My father, who served in the military, instilled in me the importance of discipline. He taught me to appreciate the worth of what I have been given, she continued. She believes that through working hard, she has established a legacy for herself. She insisted that she didn’t do anything else with her time but “botched the bullets and just focused” on her work.

South Asian Excellence recently had a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Priyanka. She also has the movie Love Again in the works this year in addition to Citadel. She will also appear in Jee Le Zaraa, directed by Farhan Akhtar, alongside Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif.
