WASHINGTON: The United States has announced sanctions against Colombian President Gustavo Petro, accusing him of involvement in drug trafficking and other illegal activities.
According to international media reports, the United States has imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro over allegations of involvement in drug trafficking and illicit operations. As a result, his assets in the U.S. have been frozen, and American citizens have been prohibited from engaging in any financial transactions with him.
U.S. officials stated that the move reflects Washington’s continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and corruption across the region.
The Colombian government has strongly condemned the decision, describing it as politically motivated and an interference in the country’s internal affairs.
In a statement issued by President Petro’s office, the sanctions were termed an “attack on Colombia’s sovereignty.”
Analysts cited by global media warned that the U.S. move could further strain bilateral relations between Washington and Bogotá.
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump had previously threatened to halt all funding to Colombia and increase tariffs amid disputes over drug policy.
