ISLAMABAD: The federal government has formally issued the notification banning Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), declaring it a proscribed organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
The Interior Ministry has dispatched copies of the notification to the TLP leadership, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), all provincial governments, and other relevant institutions for immediate implementation.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Law has also initiated the legal process required to sustain the ban. Following consultations with the Attorney General’s Office, a formal reference will be filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Court will review the evidence—similar to a criminal trial—before making a final decision on the party’s dissolution.
The reference will be submitted under Article 17 (2) and (3) of the Constitution, which governs restrictions on political parties involved in activities prejudicial to national security or public order.
The federal government’s submission to the Supreme Court will include evidence of TLP’s alleged involvement in violent and terrorist activities. Officials confirmed that the reference is being prepared on a priority basis and will be filed soon.
On the other hand, following the federal government’s decision to ban TLP, law enforcement agencies in Karachi have compiled comprehensive data on the proscribed organization’s offices and affiliated seminaries, officials confirmed.
According to sources, details of more than a dozen locations across the city have already been collected, and further information is being gathered to ensure a complete mapping of TLP’s network in Karachi.
Officials stated that all TLP offices operating under the group’s Lahore-based central command will be sealed. Law enforcement agencies have also identified the administrators of these offices as well as financiers linked to the organization.
A senior official said that strict action will be taken against individuals involved in inciting violence or participating in subversive activities. “The noose is tightening around TLP operatives engaged in unlawful acts,” the official added.
Authorities confirmed that a full-scale crackdown is expected to begin in Karachi soon, in line with the Interior Ministry’s directive and the federal government’s decision to proscribe the group under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
