Karan Johar says SS Rajamouli’s films illustrate how conviction can outweigh logic

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his thoughts on storytelling, highlighting the significance of conviction in filmmaking. Speaking with Komal Nahata on his YouTube channel, Game Changers, Johar referenced SS Rajamouli’s films to illustrate how conviction can outweigh logic in cinema.

When asked what takes precedence when logic is set aside, Johar explained, “Conviction is very important. If you look at anything, especially if you analyse the journey of the best filmmakers, you’ll see that the biggest hits are built on conviction. Logic doesn’t matter in a film. Take any film by Rajamouli sir, for example. Where do you see logic? You only see conviction. And when conviction comes to the forefront, even the audience believes in it.”

He further elaborated, “Look at the biggest films — whether it’s Animal, RRR, or Gadar — these films are made with conviction. If you can defeat a thousand people with a single hand pump, that’s conviction, right? Anil Sharma believes that Sunny Deol can do this. That is pure conviction.”

Johar is currently preparing for the release of his production, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025. Additionally, his Dharma Productions is backing several upcoming projects, including Tu Meri Main Tera, Main Tera Tu Meri with Kartik Aaryan and Kesari Chapter 2 starring Akshay Kumar and R. Madhavan.

Recently, director SS Rajamouli went back and broke down the process of creating the song to explain how hard the crew worked to make the wildly popular song. The Telugu movie song was penned by Chandrabose and composed by MM Keeravani. The dance number’s singers, Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, will perform the song at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.

In Kiev, Ukraine, at the Presidential Palace, Naatu Naatu was filmed. Although Rajamouli had intended to film the song in India, his plans ultimately fell through. His team traveled to Kiev after locating the ideal venue for the song. The director revealed that in order to make the song look even more authentic and embrace the setting, he was quite particular about including real dancers and musicians in the backdrop.

Prem Rakshith, who has previously collaborated with Rajamouli, lead actors Ram Charan, and Jr. NTR, choreographed the now-viral dance moves. Rajamouli spoke with Vanity Fair about the making of the well-known song starring Ram and NTR. For each of them, [Prem] gave one of the most unforgettable numbers, he claimed. He is fully aware of their fashion sense and body language. He is fully aware of what their supporters want from them. He must develop a style that will work for both of the performers, who are required to dance together despite each having their own distinct dance technique. I wanted him to dance in a simple style because I also wanted him to be able to figure it out.

Prem and Rama Rajamouli, Rajamouli’s wife and a costume designer, took sure to incorporate the actors’ clothing into the dance moves as well. The costume staff had to save two or three clothes for the dancers because they would need to meticulously clean them after dancing on a dirty floor. Prem also came up with the brilliant plan to involve Ram and NTR in the creative usage of the suspenders. While this was a humorous dance number, the director had informed Prem that it also doubled as a battle scene for the purposes of the movie’s plot.

The director continued, “For me, Naatu Naatu is one of the reasons I think it is such a hit because it is not just the music or the dancing, but because there is a wonderful story in itself. Inside those 10 minutes, which include the lead sequence from Naatu Naatu and the entire song, is the entire plot of RRR. Nobody in America or the rest of the world truly understands the song’s lyrics, yet the lyrics are catchy and flow well. I believe Chandrabose, the lyricist, deserves praise.

Rajamouli continued by saying that in addition to being “exceptionally skilled dancers,” the principal actors also successfully conveyed the song’s nuanced emotions to the viewers in the manner that he had envisioned. Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris all appear in the March 25, 2022, global release of RRR.

His relatives are the composers MM Keeravani and Kalyani Malik, who were nominated for this year’s Oscars for their work on RRR’s Naatu Naatu.

The American director added that aspiring filmmakers ought to speak less and pay attention to people around them who have more expertise. He advised them to consult with older people, work together, and pay attention to them. “You can’t make a movie like RRR without everyone in a cooperation where everyone believes that they are contributing the best of who they are so your movie will be the best thing they’ve made,” he said.

Ram Charan was forced to stop production on RRR

Ram Charan has now disclosed that he had to halt production on RRR for three months.
Ram Charan reportedly revealed information about filming for RRR in Ukraine. He claimed that a second-degree ligament tear forced him to stop filming for three months while he healed. Following his injury recovery, he went back to the Ukrainian filming locations for Naatu Naatu.

Ram Charan mentioned in a different interview that it takes six days of rehearsing to perfect the dance routine.

‘RRR’ fails to win Golden Globes best picture award 2023

The Golden Globe Awards’ Best Picture category does not go to SS Rajamouli’s RRR.

The movie received two nominations: one for Best Original Song and one for Best Picture. RRR achieved a historic victory when its song Natu Natu took home the prize for Best Original Song, but the movie fell short of winning the other category against Argentina 1985.

Along with other mind-blowing movies, Rajamouli’s blockbuster received nominations for French-Dutch coming-of-age drama Decision To Leave, an Argentine historical drama, and a close-out Korean romantic mystery German anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front and Argentina, 1985

Ram Charan and Jr. NTR play the main characters in the Telugu movie RRR. The movie made more than INR 1200 crore worldwide.

The movie has been chosen to screen at the Oscars 2023 in addition to being nominated for a 2023 Golden Globe. On January 24, the complete list of Academy Award nominees will be made public.

According to Indian media, the 80th Golden Globe Awards are being held in California.
