Court hands over Sheikh Rashid to Murree police on transitory remand

IHC bail Sheikh Rashid
  • Court directed officials to present Sheikh Rashid on Feb 09.
  • Rashid claimed that a false case was made against him.
  • Murree police said that a written decision not announced.

ISLAMABAD: A local court of Islamabad handed over Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid to Murree police on a one-day transitory remand in a case registered against the former interior minister for threatening police personnel.

The court while approving the transitory remand directed officials to present the former interior minister an ally of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan  before a Murree court on Thursday (tomorrow) by 2pm.

During today’s hearing, Rashid claimed that a false case was made against him. He said that government  wants him to change his political allegiance.

“I handed over the passwords of both mobile phones to the police. The Murree police have interrogated me for hours,” said Rashid.

The judge inquired the police if they have requested for a transitory remand before.

At this, the police said that this is the first time they have made the request.

However, Rashid’s counsel Ali Bukhari said that the AML chief is in custody, adding that Murree police’s request for a transitory remand was rejected recently by a judicial magistrate.

“It was rejected as procedure was not followed,” he said while opposing the plea for the transitory remand.

Bukhari also questioned why the police was seeking a transitory remand when they have already recovered everything from the former federal minister’s house.

“They have also taken Sheikh Rashid’s licensed weapons,” said the counsel. He added that the remand cannot be granted as it has been rejected again.

He added that the Murree police did not file a plea against the rejection of the transitory remand.

“Do you have a copy of the transitory remand’s rejection?” questioned the judge.

The Murree police said that a written decision was not announced and only a verbal order was issued.

LHC suspends ECP order to de-notify 43 PTI MNAs

LHC suspends
  • LHC Judge Justice Shahid Karim heard the case.
  • Court also issued notices to the ECP and federal Govt.
  • Court restricted the ECP from holding by-elections.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) suspended the Election Commission of Pakistan’s notification that de-notified 43 MNAs of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Justice Shahid Karim heard the case and restricted the ECP from holding by-elections in the 43 constituencies until further orders.

The court also issued notices to the federal government, NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The LHC issued directives on a petition filed by Riaz Fatyana, Nasarullah Khan, and other PTI leaders challenging the acceptance of their resignations as MNAs by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

In the petition, the PTI leaders accused the NA speaker of accepting resignations to ‘politically victimize’ the opponents. They pleaded with the court to nullify the decision of speaker Raja Pervaiz Asharaf and the order of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

PTI’s lawyer, Barrister Ali Zafar, argued that after withdrawing the resignations, the Speaker has no authority to accept the resignations. Accepting the resignation of the members of the assembly is against the law and based on malice. He said resignations of members of the National Assembly will be accepted contrary to the rules laid down by the Supreme Court.

The petitioner’s lawyer said that Speaker National Assembly accepted the resignations to take political revenge. Before accepting the resignation, the Speaker did not call the members and ask for their position.

In the petition, it was requested that the court nullify the move of accepting the resignation of the Speaker of the National Assembly. The court declared the notification of the Speaker and the Election Commission null and void.

Pakistan fails to improve in corruption perceptions index

Pakistan fails
  • Pakistan ranks 140th out of 180 countries.
  • Most countries failed to stop corruption.
  • Concrete action  needed to control corruption.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan failed to improve in Transparency International’s (TI) latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI 2022) as it retained its place among 180 countries in the world.

The countries and territories included in the survey are ranked by their perceived levels of public sector corruption scoring on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean) — on the CPI.

Pakistan ranks 140th out of 180 countries with a score of 27 — the worst in a decade, a Transparency International report showed Tuesday. In 2021, the country slipped 16 places to 140 from 124 out of 180 countries.

The TI report shows that most countries across the globe are failing to stop corruption.

“More than two-thirds of countries score below 50, while 26 countries have fallen to their lowest scores yet,” a statement from the corruption watchdog said. It further stated that a total of 155 countries couldn’t even make any significant progress in the fight against corruption since 2012, “despite concerted efforts and hard-won gains”.

Meanwhile, the global average remains unchanged for over a decade at just 43 out of 100.

The corruption watchdog noted that the country “continued its statistically significant downward trend” of the last 10 years.

“In 2018, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan took the reins of the country promising to combat widespread corruption and promote reforms on the socio-economic fronts but no significant improvement was made,” said the watchdog.
