Death toll rises to 14 in Lasbela cylinder blast

KARACHI/LASBELA: The number of people who died due to the huge cylinder explosion in Balochistan’s Lasbela district has reached 14.

Police sources said the explosion took place in a shop, which damaged nearby buildings and shops and destroyed 25 motorcycles. Four shops and a hotel were completely gutted by fire after the blast.

Two people died on the spot while more than two dozen were injured. 25 injured were shifted to Burns Centre, Civil Hospital Karachi where 12 more died taking the death toll to 12. A total of 11 seriously injured are still undergoing treatment in Burns Centre Karachi.

The deceased have been identified as Muhammad Qasim, Ghulam Rasool, Barkat Amin, Hidayatullah, Manzoor, Muhammad Yusuf, Iqbal, Zahoor Ahmed, Umar, Das, Mukesh Kumar, Abdul Razzaq and others.

Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi Dr. Rubina Bashir said that 25 injured people have been brought for treatment at the Burns Center of Civil Hospital. However, 14 of them died during treatment.

She said that the condition of some other injured with 70 to 90 percent burns is also critical, adding that the death toll is expected to rise.

On the other hand, an inquiry has been started by the police to determine the responsibility for the incident.
On other hand, at least 13 people, including three children, were injured in two blasts in the Khuzdar district of Balochistan province yesterday.

Both the bomb blasts took place at the Umar Farooq Chowk, resulting in 13 people including three others injured. One of the explosives was fixed to a motorcycle in the area.

Second phase of LG polls started in Balochistan

QUETTA: The second phase of local government (LG) elections started in 32 districts of Balochistan province on Wednesday.

In the second phase of elections, the councilors elected during the first phase would cast their votes for the reserved seats of seven municipal corporations, 48 municipal committees, and 597 union councils.

The polling will continue till 5 pm without any break. Strict security measures have been made on the directions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) around the polling stations.

The voting is being held for 33 percent of seats allocated for women, and 5 percent each for farmers, labors, and non-Muslims. A total of 597 polling stations have been set up across the province for elections to reserve seats.

1,421 women candidates will be elected on women-reserved seats, while elected representatives will cast their votes for 553 seats after being elected unopposed.

It should be noted that out of 4,788 reserved seats in 32 districts of Balochistan, 2577 candidates have been elected unopposed while polling is underway on 1512 seats.

In Balochistan, women will be elected on 516 seats out of 2082, while 1,554 candidates have already been elected unopposed.

Out of 902 seats of farmers, 428 candidates have been elected unopposed while elections in 474 seats are underway.

Out of 902 labor seats, 421 candidates have been elected unopposed and polling is being held on 481 seats, while 174 candidates have been elected unopposed out of 902 reserved for non-Muslims, and polling for 41 seats is underway.
