ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued an health advisory for the prevention and control of dengue in view of the recent rains in the country.

According to the NIH advisory, dengue cases are expected to increase in Punjab, Balochistan and the northern areas, the dengue virus spreads rapidly in hot and humid weather, which can make the situation even worse after the rains.

The company has directed the authorities and the public to take immediate steps to take precautionary measures and to prevent mosquitoes.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 28,427 dengue cases were reported in Pakistan in 2024, which is a significant increase over last year.

The NIH has warned that more cases may be revealed if precautions are not taken.

Early symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headaches, joints and muscle aches, signs on the skin and pain behind the eyes.

NIH has advised the public to use only paracetamol in case of fever, while refusing to use the use of aspirin and NSAIDs as these medicines can increase the risk of bleeding.

Dengue outbreak likely to occur in major cities in October

Dengue outbreak

ISLAMABAD: The dengue outbreak is likely to occur in 10 major cities across Pakistan including Karachi and Lahore in month of October.

The Pakistan Metrological Department said that dengue may see a significant rise in October, particularly in ten major cities across Pakistan, including Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Larkana, and Multan.

The other regions affected by post-monsoon rainfall are also at risk.

The dengue fever has severely impacted the health of population, particularly during the post-monsoon season.

The period from September 20 to December 05 has become increasingly dangerous for dengue spread, with environmental factors playing a significant role.

According to the PMD, dengue transmission is triggered when temperatures remain between 26 C and 29C for three to five weeks, with humidity levels of around 60 percent.

Similarly, rainfall exceeding 27mm, combined with a time lag of up to three weeks, further increases the risk.

The disease-carrying mosquitoes are most active two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset, with breeding coming to a halt only when temperatures drop below 16 C.

Based on a detailed analysis of historical data and the current climate outlook, the PMD experts have warned that conditions have become highly conducive to dengue onset since mid-September.

The PMD has urged all relevant stakeholders, including national health agencies and dengue control centers, to take immediate preemptive measures in the affected districts.

Your fight against Dengue! Know it before it gets to know you

Two dengue cases reported in Rawalpindi

Dengue, also known as break-bone fever, is a viral infection that spreads through mosquitoes. The mosquito-transmitted disease prevails in the tropical and sub-tropical zones. Pakistan, being in the subtropical vicinity, appears as a breeding ground for Dengue.

According to the past reports of the World Health Organization, Dengue is endemic to Pakistan as the cases are reported throughout the year. However, the transmission seems to increase seasonally and the upsurges are mostly associated with post-monsoon conditions.

Dengue can be deadly, especially when a person is infected more than once. Hence, anyone who has been infected by Dengue before should take extra precautions. Some of the symptoms that one needs to beware of include high fever, headache, pain behind eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and rash.

Since the infection is also accompanied by thinning of blood, caused by low platelet count, one should be very careful with even over-the-counter medicines without doctor’s prescription; these medicines may severely complicate one’s condition by further thinning out blood.

As a Pakistani, being vulnerable to this viral disease and its lethality, one must be informed about major ways to prevent Dengue. Some of the steps that can be taken include the appropriate use of mosquito repellent, wearing clothes that fully protect the body, taking steps to control mosquitoes, eliminating stagnant water as a breeding ground and avoiding areas or peak hours associated with Dengue.
