Senate body approves PECA Bill amid journalists protest

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Monday approved the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) amendment bill despite opposition from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and journalist organisations.

JUI Senator Kamran Murtaza said why the PACA Amendment Bill is being passed so haste. In such a short time, the law cannot be read, what will be the consultation.

Kamran Murtaza said that there are many weaknesses in the bill and added that there is no definition of fake news, how will it be decided what fake news is.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that it would have been very good to have consulted journalists before the bill, but we agree with the spirit of the bill. He said it is necessary to root out menace of fake news in the form of social media.

The Secretary Interior requested the committee to approve the bill approved by the National Assembly. The government has also introduced some amendments so that the law can be implemented better.

Cellular, internet services suspended for two days in Quetta

QUETTA: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led Balcohsitan government has suspended mobile and internet service in provincial capital, after Jamiat Ulema-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) announced complete shutter-down strike against rigging in re-polling in PB-45 Quetta VIII.

According to the district administration, mobile service has been suspended for the last 10 hours in Quetta city and its surroundings.

Due to the shutdown of mobile service, citizens are facing severe difficulties, courier service, food and bike riders and people associated with mobile work are also sufferings.

The district administration said that the reason for the suspension of the mobile service is not known, the mobile service could not be restored even yesterday.

On the other hand, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) has announced a shutter down strike across Balochistan today.

In this regard JUI Balochistan Ameer Maulana Abdul Wasi says that the protest will continue until the demands accepted.

Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate Haji Ali Madad Jatak emerged victorious with 6,883 votes as per the unofficial results in by-election at 15 polling stations in PB-45. The by-election was conducted under the orders of Election Tribunal and Form 47 was issued.

Meanwhile, Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) candidate Nasarullah Zayrai secured second place with 4,122 votes. JUI-F’s Usman Pirkani came in third place after securing 3,731 votes.

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed optimism that a consensus will be reached on the constitutional amendment, which he believes will be in the best interest of the country.

He acknowledged Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s agreement with the proposed amendments by the PPP, noting that whenever successful constitution-making has occurred in the country, both the PPP and JUI-F played key roles.

Chairman PPP, while addressing a press conference after meeting Maulana Fazlur Rahman at Bilawal House, expressed gratitude to Maulana for his support on the proposed constitutional amendment.

He mentioned that tomorrow, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has invited them for a luncheon meeting, and he is hopeful that consensus will also be achieved with Nawaz Sharif.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari added that Maulana Fazlur Rahman desires consensus among all political parties on the constitutional amendments. He stated that discussions will also take place with other political parties, and he hopes Maulana will help convince the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to join the process.

He emphasized that PTI should play a constructive role in politics but is currently becoming an obstacle to this process.

Chairman PPP clarified that he does not wish to provide a specific timeline for the approval of the constitutional amendment but expressed hope that the final draft passed by Parliament will be theirs. Reflecting on the past, he remarked that during the 19th Amendment, under the pressure of the judiciary, a mistake was made, which they do not wish to repeat this time.

He reiterated that for the first time in the country’s history, judicial reforms are about to be implemented.

Maulana Fazlur Rahman praised Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s leadership in achieving consensus on the constitutional amendments. He confirmed that the PPP and JUI-F have agreed on a mutual draft for constitutional reforms.

KARACHI: Former captain and cricketer Shahid Afridi met with chief of Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI-F) Maulana Fazal ur Rehman.

ECP reserves verdict in JUI-F intra-party election

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reserved its decision regarding Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) intra-party election case.

A three-member bench, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, presided over the hearing.

CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja said that “If the intra-party election is not held, the electoral symbol can be withdrawn and the party can be de-notified”.

DG Political Wing Election Commission said that according to the constitution the term of office bearers of JUI-F is 5 years, the term was completed on July 7, 2024. On which the lawyer of JUI said that party moderator has been elected, 2023.

The election process has started since, JUI unit, district and tehsil elections have been held, it has taken a lot of time, now our provincial elections have started, intra party elections have been held in Gilgit.

Lawyer JUI-F said that party election takes a lot of time, there is no paperwork here, every worker is given the right to contest the election. The general election also came along, that’s why it took a lot of time.

The Chief Election Commissioner said what level of intra-party elections are JUI holding now. On which lawyer JUI said that on September 19 Punjab, followed by provincial elections of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan.

The Election Commissioner inquired how much time he wanted, to which the lawyer said we want 60 days, Sikandar Sultan Raja replied that it is too much time.

JUI’s lawyer said that the constitutional amendments are still going on, on which the Chief Election Commissioner remarked that the party election is not related to the constitutional amendments.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday summoned the Senate session on Tuesday (August 27) at 5 pm.

The president summoned the session of the Senate in the exercise of powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 54 of the constitution of Pakistan.

JUI-F denies permission to hold public gathering in Karachi

KARACHI: Deputy Commissioner Karachi refused to allow Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) to hold public gathering in the city which was scheduled on today.

JUI has announced a public gathering against the election results at New MA Jinnah Road, which will be addressed by the party’s central and provincial leadership including JUI-F Maulana Fazal ur Rehman.

Deputy Commissioner East said that JUI was not allowed to hold the rally, the rally was not allowed on the report of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East.

According to the SSP East report, in view of the recent incidents of terrorism in the city, large public gatherings cannot be allowed.

On the other hand, JUI spokesperson Aslam Ghauri said that JUI chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman has reached Karachi and he will address the Jalsa.

Aslam Ghauri said that it is hoped that the Sindh government will abide by the language of Bilawal Bhutto, peaceful protest is a constitutional right and we have full right to use the constitutional right.

JUI-F moved SC against its own female MNA

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazal(JUI-F) has filed a plea in the Supreme Court against its own female National Assembly Member on a reserved seat.

In the petition filed by JUI in the Supreme Court, it was stated that the name of Sadaf Ehsan was not in the list submitted by the party, the party was named Sadaf Yasmin but she did not show interest.

It is stated in the petition that Sadaf Ehsan got the seat held by Sadaf Yasmin through the alleged connivance of some party elements.

In the JUI plea, it is said that when the Election Commission of Pakistan started an inquiry, Sadaf Ehsan approached the High Court.

The Peshawar High Court ordered to issuing of notification to Sadaf Ehsan as a Member of the Assembly, the decision of the Peshawar High Court should be annulled as it is not by the constitution and law.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) candidate’s request for a vote recount in NA-266 (Kila Abdullah-Cum Chaman).

Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai emerged victorious from the NA-266 seat by securing 67,028 votes. JUI-F’s Salahuddin who finished runner-up with 58439 votes challenged Achackzai’s victory and requested for a vote recount.

According to the decision of the electoral body, the difference in votes between the successful candidate and the runner-up candidate is 8,589. Requests for re-verification of votes at 36 polling stations were also rejected.

The petitioner failed to provide concrete evidence in this regard. The petitioner can approach the Election Tribunal for evidence.

It should be noted that Jamiat Ulema Islam(JUI) candidate Salahuddin had applied to the Election Commission.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a notification of the success of an unknown woman on the reserved seat of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazal(JUI-F) quota.

The ECP has issued the notification of the success of a woman named Sadaf Ehsan for the reserved seat of the National Assembly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whose number is F6 of 2024.

On the other hand, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman has requested to cancel the notification and conduct an investigation.

In the request of Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, it is said that Sadaf Ehsan is not a party member and this name is not in our list.

He demanded that the notification of Sadaf Ehsan should be canceled and the notification of Hina Bibi should be issued.

It is pleaded in the petition that the notification was issued by mistake or collusion and notification of the alien woman should be investigated.
