PM Shehbaz directs swift resolution of seminary bill after meeting Fazl

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday to discuss issues surrounding the Seminary Registration Bill.

The JUI-F delegation, led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, included Molana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri and Senator Kamran Murtaza.

Prime Minister Shehbaz stressed the importance of swiftly resolving the matter and instructed the Ministry of Law to address the concerns raised, ensuring compliance with legal and constitutional requirements.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), including Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Qamar Zaman Kaira, as well as PML-N leaders Ayaz Sadiq, Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Information Minister Atta Tarar.

Additionally, Rana Sanaullah, a key PML-N figure and PM’s adviser, along with Attorney General Mansoor Usman, participated in the discussions.

Reports indicate that PM Shehbaz initiated contact with Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the Seminary Registration Bill. Before the meeting, Fazlur Rehman held extensive consultations with officials from Wafaqul Madaris.

The government is making efforts to address reservations held by religious parties concerning the bill.

The Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2024, had been passed by parliament and sent to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval. However, the President returned the bill to the National Assembly, citing concerns over potential conflicts with existing laws governing seminaries.

Among the issues highlighted by President Zardari were contradictions within the bill’s definitions of seminaries and the existence of the Madrassa Education Board Ordinance 2001, which he suggested rendered new legislation unnecessary.
