  • The driver appeared to lose control, causing the car to drift off the road.
  • Eight Ugandans and eight Kenyans were killed.

A bus traveling to Nairobi, Kenya, collapsed shortly after entering Kenya from Uganda, according to authorities, resulting in at least 21 deaths and 49 injuries. This incident is the most recent in a string of catastrophic traffic incidents that have occurred recently.

Eight Ugandans and eight Kenyans were killed according to Rogers Taitika, spokesman for the Ugandan regional police, who spoke to the AFP news agency.

The bus, which was traveling from the city of Mbale in eastern Uganda to Nairobi, crashed late on Saturday in the Kenyan town of Lwakhakha, which is just across the border from a town with the same name in Uganda.

According to Taitika, the driver appeared to lose control, causing the car to drift off the road.

He continued, “Preliminary findings indicate a case of over-speeding by the bus driver.”

Following a recent spike in accidents in the East African nation of Uganda, the government is preparing to announce new initiatives to try to enhance road safety.

16 persons were killed on January 6 when a passenger bus plowed into a stopped truck close to the city of Gulu in northern Uganda.

In addition to the victims of the most recent incidents in January, the Ugandan police report that 104 road crashes were reported in just three days over the New Year holiday between December 30 and January 1, resulting in 35 deaths and 114 injuries.

At the funeral on January 2 for three siblings who died in a collision, security minister Jim Muhwezi said the cabinet was developing new safety measures to attempt to lower the frequency of accidents.
