Elections should be held simultaneously in Pakistan: Saad Rafiq

Elections should
  • He said separate elections will create further division.
  • He said PML-N fought the elections even in the worst conditions.
  • Saad Rafiq said KP and Punjab assemblies dissolved without any reason.

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq has said that it is his personal opinion that elections should be held simultaneously across the country because separate elections will lead to further division.

Federal Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq while talking to the media in Lahore said that the observance of the constitution is in place but elections have been postponed on different occasions in this country.

He said that the purpose of delaying the elections is not that PML-N wants to run away from the elections, while PML-N fought the elections even in the worst conditions.

He further said that no party of PDM runs away from the election because these are old parties and have contested the election many times in which they keep winning but losing but the country cannot be subjected to any more crisis.

The federal minister said, “If accept the demand of next general election than they would start demanding the removal of election commission while that institution is created under the constitution which is protected by the constitution.”

He said that this is the nature of Imran Khan, if one thing is accepted, he puts forward another demand, if another is accepted, another demand comes forward.

He said that elections should be held in the country at one time, it is not a game and the second thing is that the constitution has given the authority to the leader of the parliament that he can dissolve the assembly but it cannot be done by an individual without reason.

He said that the assemblies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab were dissolved without any reason, which is being ordered by a person who has no constitutional status and his statement in this regard is on record.

Peru Congress shelves President Boluarte’s bill for early elections

Peru
  • Boluarte proposed a bill on Wednesday to move elections to October 2023.
  • Protesters have been calling for new elections to be held as soon as possible.
  • Eight weeks of anti-government protests have resulted in the deaths of 48 individuals.

Peru: On Friday night, Peru’s Congress postponed President Dina Boluarte‘s measure to move elections to 2023, leaving a major demand of demonstrators whose rallies have rocked the country in recent weeks hanging in the balance.

In an attempt to quiet the violent protests, Boluarte proposed a bill on Wednesday to move elections to October 2023. After weeks of political infighting, a splintered Congress has repeatedly failed to agree on its own bill.

The President’s plan was taken up by a congressional commission on Friday afternoon, but it was shelved on a technicality before it even reached debate. It will not be debated again until July when the new legislative year begins.

Protesters have been calling for new elections to be held as soon as possible since previous left-wing President Pedro Castillo was deposed and imprisoned in December after attempting to illegally dissolve Congress.

Deaths due to the conflict

Eight weeks of anti-government protests have resulted in the deaths of 48 individuals in conflicts between demonstrators and police forces, the majority of whom were slain in Peru’s copper-rich south.

Congress had already agreed to move elections from 2026 to 2024, but this did not put an end to the protests.

The right-wing Popular Force party’s bill to call elections this year failed Wednesday after days of closed-door deliberations failed to produce a consensus.

Castillo’s party, Peru Libre, proposed a second bill for early elections and a non-binding referendum on a new constitution, but it was defeated Thursday night.

Other bills to move elections forward are still in the works, but none have reached an agreement.

Protesters in Peru have blocked highways with trees, stones, and tires, taken over regional airports, and burned down buildings, disrupting commodities delivery, business, and the functioning of some of the world’s most important copper mines.

Myanmar junta prepares for poll, raising fears of more bloodshed

Myanmar
  • .The country’s military is planning elections.
  • An election cannot be free and fair under the current circumstances.
  • The political opposition has been crushed.

BANGKOK: Two years after a coup ended Myanmar‘s brief democratic experiment, the country’s military is planning elections that analysts say could result in more violence as opposition to junta rule grows.

According to observers, the proposed election cannot be free and fair under the current circumstances, with one analyst characterizing it as a mere “show” aimed at justifying the junta’s hold on power.

Allegations of voter fraud in the November 2020 election, which was won resoundingly by democracy figurehead Aung San Suu Kyi‘s party, provided the army with a justification to seize control on February 1, 2021.

Despite the fact that the charges were never proven, the generals detained Suu Kyi and other prominent civilian officials in a series of pre-dawn raids.

The political opposition has been crushed, and the junta is now likely to organize a new election later this year – no later than August, according to the constitution.

With opposition blazing from the borders’ steep jungles to the plains of the army’s traditional recruiting grounds, citizens throughout large swaths of the country are unlikely to vote — and run the risk of reprisals if they do.

Any junta-run election will be “like a cart with only one wheel,” according to a former government servant in Yangon who has been on strike since the takeover. “There is no way that will produce any development,” he added, asking to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation.

Lin Lin, a member of one of the dozens of “People’s Defence Force” groups fighting the junta in the jungle near the Thai border, claimed polls would have no influence on their mission to remove the military from Myanmar politics.

“We will keep our weapons until we have a democratically elected government,” he said.

Elections

The junta-imposed state of emergency is set to expire at the end of January, at which point the constitution requires the authorities to call new elections.

Although the government of junta supremo Min Aung Hlaing has not established a date, it did give all current and aspiring political parties two months to register with its election commission last week.

Military officials are attempting to assemble a broad enough patchwork of constituents to make an election credible, including ethnic rebel groups that have avoided the post-coup upheaval and smaller, regional parties.

However, voting will most certainly be difficult in many parts of the country, according to Htwe Htwe Thein of Curtin University in Australia.

“In areas where they do have power, people may be forced to vote, and vote for the junta-affiliated party or parties,” she told.

“People would very certainly expect to be watched — and there could be consequences for not voting or voting against the junta.”

Anti-coup fighters have also threatened people assisting with the poll, with local media reporting several attacks on teams validating voter lists in Yangon’s economic center.

The junta’s “technical ability to organize anything approaching even blatantly fabricated elections will be limited by a lack of institutional capacity, uncertainty, boycotts, and violence,” according to independent expert David Mathieson.

Any poll would be “far from legitimate,” Mathieson said.

“Remember, these aren’t genuine elections. They’re a shambolic performance designed to legitimize the (junta’s) coup d’etat accusations of a rigged 2020 election “He stated.

Did this reassure investors?

Some of Adani’s companies rose somewhat on Monday, while investors continued to sell Adani stock, wiping out billions more in market value.

According to Hindenburg, just roughly 30 pages of the Adani statement dealt with topics relating to its findings.

“The remainder of the response consisted of 330 pages of court records, as well as 53 pages of high-level financials, general information, and details on unrelated company activities, such as how it fosters female entrepreneurship and the cultivation of safe veggies,” the statement added.

Turkey: Erdogan has declared elections for May 14

Turkey
  • Turkey’s next general election was scheduled for June 18.
  • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Turkey will have early elections.
  • This could be the most difficult election of Erdogan’s two-decade tenure.

Turkey: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Turkey‘s elections will go place on May 14 — a month earlier than planned — as the opposition continues to seek a unified candidate to oppose him.

This could be the most difficult election of Erdogan’s two-decade tenure, which has seen economic booms, massive infrastructure projects, tensions with neighbors, wars, and a failed coup.

“I will utilize my authority… to bring the election date ahead to May 14,” Erdogan stated in a video from a gathering with young people this weekend in the northwest city of Bursa.

Turkey’s next general election was scheduled for June 18.

“This is not an early election, but rather putting it forward,” Erdogan stated in a video broadcast made available by his office.

The Turkish leader stated that they had agreed on a timeline change with their junior right-wing coalition partner in order to avoid disrupting school test timetables.

The clock is ticking

The election campaign is scheduled to begin on March 10, giving the Turkish opposition even less time to prepare.

They have been attempting for months to come up with a single candidate to run against Erdogan in the elections.

While Turkey’s high inflation and sinking currency may boost their cause, internal squabbles work in Erdogan’s favor.

He has used the government’s media supremacy to control the nation’s political dialogue.

According to an opposition party source, their united candidate will be unveiled in February.

In opinion polls, Istanbul’s popular opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is a favorite to beat Erdogan in a head-to-head race.

He was the one who ended Erdogan’s ruling party’s dominance in the 2019 municipal elections.

An Istanbul court barred the 52-year-old from running for president last month, but he has appealed and can still run.

Due to Imamoglu’s legal fight, the main opposition CHP party’s leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu has emerged as the most likely contender to challenge Erdogan.

Kilicdaroglu, who is more bookish and less telegenic than the mayor, has failed to gain the backing of the other opposition leaders.

Erdogan’s long rule

Erdogan, a devout Muslim who does not drink or smoke, aspires to join Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the pantheon of transformative Turkish leaders.

Critics, on the other hand, accuse him of eroding the contemporary republic’s secular pillars.

Since taking office in 2003, first as prime minister and subsequently as president, he has embarked on a massive infrastructure project, constructing tunnels, bridges, and the country’s largest airport.

He questioned Turkey’s coup-ridden history and severed the military’s wings, surviving a violent coup attempt in 2016.

However, his subsequent crackdown on critics, as well as tense relations with NATO partners, have generated concerns about Turkey’s future trajectory under his leadership.

Erdogan announced on Wednesday his plan to move the election to May 14, the date of Turkey’s first free election in 1950.

Adnan Menderes, the winner on that occasion, a prime minister and a symbol of Turkish conservatism, was deposed by a military dictatorship in 1960 and executed a year later.

Erdogan’s choice of May 14 is considered a nod to the conservative voters.

Turkey: Erdogan indicates May 14 date for his biggest election test

Turkey
  • Turkey would hold elections on May 14, a month earlier.
  • The vote will also determine how Turkey is governed.
  • The vote will also determine what role it may play in easing conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East.

President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday that Turkey would hold elections on May 14, a month earlier than previously announced, kicking off what could be the most consequential vote in the republic’s century-long history.

The parliamentary and presidential elections are expected to be close, and they will be Erdogan’s biggest test in his two decades at the helm of the regional military power, NATO member, and major emerging market economy.

The vote will also determine how Turkey is governed and what role it may play in easing conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East, with an opposition alliance promising to reverse the president’s unconventional economic policies.

Erdogan told lawmakers in parliament of his Islamist-rooted AK Party (AKP) that Turks will dismiss the opposition at the ballot box on the same date that elections were held in 1950.

“Our nation will say ‘enough’ to these coup appreciators, this ambitious but incompetent Table of Six, on the same day after 73 years,” Erdogan said of the six-party alliance looking to topple him.

In the elections held on May 14 of 1950, the Democrat Party prevailed against the Republican People’s Party (CHP), which had ruled Turkey for 27 years since its founding – and which is the largest party in today’s opposition alliance.

Last year, Erdogan said the election would be held in June, but earlier this month he said the date could be moved up from June 18.
