Huma Qureshi reflects on being judged for turning into author

Huma Qureshi
  • Huma Qureshi has expanded her creative horizons.
  • Huma shared how writing defies expectations from actors.
  • She remarked that intelligence is not expected from actors.

Huma Qureshi, known for her acting prowess, has expanded her creative horizons by venturing into writing. After the success of her debut book, Zeba: An Accidental Superhero, she recently announced completing her second book, Dhundh. Reflecting on her journey as an author, Huma shared how writing defies expectations from actors in the film industry.

“It’s not expected from an actor in our industry to do something as intellectual as being an author,” she remarked. However, Huma has never adhered to stereotypes. “I just thought that this is a story I want to tell and put out in the world, so I did it.”

Addressing the prejudices actors face, she noted, “Everyone has some guru mantra for actors—what they should or shouldn’t do. I haven’t asked for those opinions.” For Huma, taking risks is essential. “The bigger problem is not even trying anything different. People spend their entire lives scared to experiment. I might not succeed in everything, but at least I try.”

Huma’s creative pursuits don’t stop at writing. She and her brother, Saqib Saleem, aim to expand their family’s 50-year-old restaurant, Saleem, across India and internationally, taking Indian cuisine to the global stage.

Huma Qureshi recounts when David Dhawan advised her on body positivity

Huma Qureshi
  • Huma Qureshi shared a memorable piece of advice from David Dhawan.
  • She reflected on her journey and body positivity in Bollywood.
  • Dhawan gave her valuable advice about ignoring societal pressures.

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi recently opened up about a memorable piece of advice she received early in her career from filmmaker David Dhawan.

In an interview with Mashable India, the Gangs of Wasseypur actress reflected on her journey and the constant conversations about body positivity in Bollywood, where actresses are often trolled for gaining weight.

Huma shared that shortly after her 2012 debut film hit the screens, she bumped into David Dhawan at a cafe in Mumbai. She was thrilled when the Judwaa director recognized her and initiated a conversation. During their chat, Dhawan offered her some valuable advice about ignoring societal pressures related to body image.

“He said, ‘Beta, you are a very good actor. Tereko bahaut log bolenge weight loss karle, surgery karle, kuch nahi karna,'” Huma recalled, translating to: “A lot of people will ask you to lose weight, get surgery done, don’t do any of it.” Dhawan assured her that since the audience had accepted her in her debut role, she didn’t need to change herself for others.

Huma found the advice uplifting, noting, “And that coming from industry seniors… you just write it down: ‘Yeh bhoolna nahi hai.'”

Huma, a strong advocate for body positivity, also produced the film Double XL in 2022, which dealt with similar issues. She will next appear in Jolly LLB 3 alongside Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi.

Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salmaan At “Guns and Gulaabs” Screening: Watch

Rajkummar Rao

The much-anticipated web series “Guns and Gulaabs” is gearing up for its grand debut on Netflix this upcoming weekend. This comedy thriller set in the 1990s boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Dulquer Salmaan, Rajkummar Rao, Gulshan Devaiah, and Adarsh Gourav in leading roles. Recently, the renowned director duo Raj and DK organized a screening of the project in Mumbai, attended by the show’s cast, crew, and other notable figures from the film industry.

Dulquer Salmaan, making his OTT debut with “Guns and Gulaabs,” graced the Netflix series’ screening event with his elegant wife, Amaal Sufiya. Salmaan donned a retro-patterned shirt paired with white parallel trousers, complemented by tinted eyeglasses, a distinctive silver necklace, and beige shoes, capturing the essence of the 90s. Amaal opted for a green and black printed outfit, paired with minimal accessories and black heels.

Rajkummar Rao emanated retro charm in a black jacket with white prints, a black high-neck t-shirt, matching trousers, and black shoes. Adarsh Gourav chose a brown suit and white shirt for the occasion. Shreya Dhanwanthary, the female lead, appeared elegant in a red net saree, accompanied by a matching sleeveless blouse, chandelier earrings, and a wavy hairdo adorned with red roses. Director Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK, and the remaining cast also made stylish entrances.

Notably absent from the event was one of the show’s leading actors, Gulshan Devaiah, without a specified reason. The screening event was attended by numerous prominent celebrities such as Babil Khan, Huma Qureshi, Ishaan Khattar, and more.

The Netflix series, generating anticipation with its promising trailer, reportedly draws inspiration from the British TV series “Misfits of the World.” In addition to Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah, and Adarsh Gourav, the Raj and DK-directed show features an impressive ensemble cast including Satish Kaushik, Pooja Gor, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Ashmith Kunder, Gautam Sharma, Vipin Sharma, and others in pivotal roles. “Guns and Gulaabs” is set to premiere on August 18, Friday.

Huma Qureshi reveals how she dealt with popularity of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’

Huma Qureshi reveals how she dealt with 'Gangs of Wasseypur'

Huma Qureshi has finally spoken out about how she handled the popularity of her debut film, Gangs of Wasseypur. Huma Qureshi Reveals Feeling Insecure Post ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’

Huma Qureshi

Huma Qureshi has opened up about her experience dealing with the success of her debut film, Gangs of Wasseypur. Despite the film being seen as a major milestone in her career, Huma revealed that it actually made her feel insecure about herself and everything else. She expressed, “I got my first brush with success pretty early on. Maybe it was just this enthusiasm of getting out of the house and being (an actor) and then Gangs of Wasseypur happened. By 2010 I moved to Mumbai and by 2012 the film was out and it became this big hit in India. My world just exploded.”

She further explained that the film was not a glamorous affair, sharing, “This was a film where they paid me some Rs 75,000, that’s it…There were no five-star hotels, cushioning of vanity vans or an army of people (following you). It was like a bunch of people, who went to Varanasi for three months, shot and came back. Nobody had any clue what was happening.”

Reflecting on her mindset at the time, Huma admitted, “So when it came out, I was like, ‘Whoa! I am the lead in the film? My face is on the hoarding?! Should I have gotten paid more for it? Is this how movies get made?'”

She revealed that she felt lost after her quick entry into the industry, stating, “Because for me coming to Mumbai, meeting people, doing auditions, getting a film happened rather quickly, and I didn’t have a game plan after that. I was lost in choice…I was always working, and that was never a problem, but I was lost in myself. Like finding my own voice, finding myself, who I was, what kind of films I like to do, what I didn’t like to do.”

Huma acknowledged her insecurities, sharing, “I was insecure about everything, about myself, how I looked, at the work that was happening. Maybe insecure about why am I not doing the films others are doing. I didn’t have anyone to talk to…I had a younger brother in the film business, who was also figuring his way out. There was a shoulder to cry on, but really no one to help you navigate that situation. But I never thought of giving up.”

Huma Qureshi recently appeared in the film Double XL with Sonakshi Sinha.

‘I would lie if I said I did not think about it,’ says Huma Qureshi

Huma Qureshi reveals how she dealt with 'Gangs of Wasseypur'
  • Huma Qureshi reprised her character Rani Bharti in the second season.
  • Huma received many accolades for her leading turn in the period.
  • The actor had been offered the role during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the second season of the SonyLIV show Maharani, Rani Bharti was played by Huma Qureshi again. In the political drama, the actor plays a housewife who can’t read or write. When her husband Bheema Bharti is shot, she becomes the chief minister of Bihar (Sohum Shah). Huma got a lot of praise for her leading role in the historical drama.

Even though Huma’s first web series was Netflix’s Leila, which came out in 2019, she said she had some doubts about the SonyLIV series and playing a mother of three. The actor was offered the role at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. When she was told more about the role over Zoom, she said she was interested.

Speaking on an actors’ roundtable on Bollywood media, Huma said, “When I read it, there were a lot of concerns. One of them being the obvious that the industry has, i.e., it is the role of a female who has 2-3 kids of hers. If you do it, you might be slotting yourself. You still might have ten more years before you take up these kinds of roles. I would lie if I said I did not think about it or not questioned myself.”

“But then I thought it was an amazing script, and I was so glad it happened during the pandemic because you get all the time to think about your reason of living or being an actor and basically all those existential questions that we all thought about or asked ourselves. I am very grateful as it was during that time I got this script. I don’t know maybe if I got this script during non-pandemic times, I would have not taken up the project and would have got distracted. It was only because I had all this time to really think about it.”
