NEW YORK: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, has invited a high-ranking Meta official to build a local office to enhance contact between local authorities and the social media giant.

Last year, Facebook rebranded itself to Meta to create the “metaverse,” a shared virtual world that the firm believes will be the replacement for mobile internet.

On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) 77th session, where he is part of the Pakistan mission, the foreign minister met Meta’s Global Affairs President Nick Clegg.

When discussing the potential available in Pakistan, the foreign minister stated that the country has a tech-savvy youthful population (64% under the age of 30), high teledensity, massive digitization of the economy, and a business-friendly regulatory regime.

“Pakistan’s IT sector has experienced rapid growth in recent years, creating new prospects for platforms like Meta to extend their operations in Pakistan,” the foreign minister told a representative of the social media business.

Clegg stated that Meta’s Pakistan team is exclusively made up of Pakistani experts. He informed the foreign minister of Meta’s ongoing connectivity and capacity-building initiatives in Pakistan.

Government seeking all-encompassing medical assistance

medical assistance for flood affectees

ISLAMABAD: Due to catastrophic floods that have wreaked devastation and destroyed the country’s health system, leaving people susceptible to dangerous infections, the government has requested all-encompassing medical aid.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) most recent data, the death toll from floods has reached 1,559, including 551 children and 318 women, and does not include deaths from flood-related diseases.

“The people [stricken by the floods] are now looking towards the 2/3 of the population that has not been affected,” Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives said at a press conference on Tuesday alongside military officials.

The minister urged doctors to set up medical camps for flood victims wherever possible and urged the general public to donate generously to rehabilitation efforts.

Iqbal urged the health sector to assist the government as disease outbreaks were observed in numerous regions and were expected to worsen.
Flooding caused by record monsoon rains and glacier melt in northern Pakistan has affected approximately 33 million people in the South Asian country of 220 million, destroying houses, crops, bridges, highways, and livestock, with damages estimated at $30 billion.

During July and August, the country received 391 mm (15.4 inches) of rain, or 190% more than the 30-year average, as a result of a monsoon that began early and lasted longer than usual. Rainfall in Sindh’s southern province increased to 466% of the norm.

According to Iqbal, the federal government has also launched a sister district scheme, which will allow a district with sufficient resources to adopt a flood-affected district.

In order to bridge the gap in health services, the adoptive district will provide its health facilities to the flood-affected area for a month.

“The federal government is requesting that provinces begin this adopt a district initiative. Particularly in Punjab. Provinces should make their resources available to assist individuals. This will be of great assistance to the country “He stated.

According to the planning minister, the government has decided that all vice-chancellors would be directed to task their university students with creating a mother and child nutrition pack through the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

Iqbal stated that the government intends to collect two million mother and child nutrition kits from the 2.5 million students enrolled in Pakistan’s universities, the specifics of which will be announced soon.

“We want to raise these nutrition kits to help moms and children who are dying for food and whose lives are in danger,” stated the planning minister.

PM asks SCO to make Pakistan-specific climate action plans amid flood disaster

Pakistan-specific climate action plans

SAMARKAND: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called upon the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to come up with Pakistan-specific programs on climate change as the country faced  devastating impact of the global natural phenomenon.

“This climatic injustice has befallen us despite the fact that our carbon emission is less than one percent,” the prime minister said in his address at the Heads of State meeting of the eight-member SCO, held here in the historic city of Samarkand.

The prime minister’s call to the SCO members came in the wake of the recent flash floods in Pakistan that wreaked havoc with the livelihood and infrastructure across the country.

He mentioned that Pakistan was braving the disaster of floods, where hill torrents and massive rains killed 1,400 people including 400 children while millions of houses were damaged partially or completely.

“I earnestly appeal to all of you that let the SCO stand up and take steps against this devastation through sustainable programs,” he said.

PM Sharif said the country never faced such level of climate-induced catastrophe in its history that inflicted disaster upon human lives, infrastructure, livestock, and crops.

He stressed the dire need for assistance from the international community to help Pakistan overcome the problems in the wake of floods, including relief, rehabilitation, and control of water-borne diseases.

“In view of the massive disaster, I would be very honest to urge this forum to extend assistance to Pakistan and chalk out plans regarding climate change for our future generations,” he said.

PM Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm and unwavering commitment to achieving the goals of the SCO.

He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to join the SCO states in the implementation of robust connectivity plans among the neighboring regional countries.

“It will be a win-win outcome for all the member states. This is the time to act, and act now,” he stressed.

The prime minister said Pakistan was firm in collective dedication to fight the menace of extremism, separatism and terrorism.

In the fight against terrorism, he said, thousands of Pakistani civilians and armed forces laid down their lives for the security of their homeland.

As the neighboring country of Afghanistan, he said, Pakistan valued peace, progress and shared development of the country important for the region.

“We have to work together to support all good initiatives in Afghanistan for the good of the people of Afghanistan in areas, particularly education, health, and human rights,” he said.

Sharif said it would be a “big mistake if we ignored Afghanistan.”

He emphasized that strengthening Afghanistan is vital in view of the stability of the region besides achieving the goals of the SCO.

He urged the SCO community to work towards unfreezing the assets of Afghanistan and ensuring respect for human rights especially for women and minorities.

Banning BOL news
  • It is an abuse to bind journalism and banning BOL News will spark hatred among people, Sheikh Rasheed
  • In tomorrow’s core committee meeting, Imran Khan would make important decisions regarding future politics
  • He said that in 15 days, there might be a behind-the-scenes reconciliation formula, but if it fails, then Imran Khan will give a call

RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League (AML) Chairman Sheikh Rasheed on Friday said that it is an abuse to bind journalism and banning BOL News will spark hatred among people.

According to the details, he said that in tomorrow’s core committee meeting, Imran Khan would make important decisions regarding future politics.

“I strongly condemn the Bol news ban and said long ago that September would be cruel. Fifteen days are very important, but I have given a time of 15 October. I gave 45 days, and 15 days have already passed.”

He said that in 15 days, there might be a behind-the-scenes reconciliation formula, but if it fails, then Imran Khan will give a call.

Sheikh Rasheed said that the meeting between Shahbaz Sharif and the Russian President has no status. “They are the people only for the photo session, whether flood waters or any other issue. They (government) are not helping the flood victims at all.”

Sheikh Rasheed said, “Imran Khan is currently being targeted internationally and domestically. Some religious extremists are after his life and my life too.”

Flood affectees have right to complain and demand, says CM Sindh

affectees have right to complain
  • Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah has said that it is the right of flood affectees to demand and complain from the government
  • There is 8 to 10 feet of water on Indus Highway, CM Sindh
  • The experts are suggesting I turn the water direction, but how it is possible?” he questioned

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah has said that it is the right of flood affectees to demand and complain from the government, BOL News reports on Friday.

“Those talking about the dam, let me tell them that 129 million acre-feet of water came. Tell me if there is a place to build such a big dam in Sindh? How to deliver water from Sindh to Tarbela and Bhasha Dam?” he asked.

According to the details, CM Sindh talked to the media and said he had a fruitful conversation with Molana Asad Mehmood over the issues of Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway, Umarkot, Keti Sea Port, and roads in Gharo.

He said, “There is 8 to 10 feet of water on Indus Highway. We are working together with NHA, and 120 million acre-feet of water came into the land of Sindh. The water which destroyed one and a half million people were displaced in Sindh.” He urged that the affectees of floods want 1.5 million tents.

“This is my third round in the flood-affected areas, and I am going to other places now. We are going to the affected areas when people are complaining to us,” he said.

“Patience of the victims is running out, but if the government loses patience, there will be more problems. The experts are suggesting I turn the water direction, but how it is possible?” he questioned.

He said that if we get tents from anywhere, we are ready to buy them. We have to give shelter to our people and must buy rations for the affectees.

Murad Ali Shah said there is a big test on Sindh, “I am visiting the whole of Sindh. We are reaching out to the people. The media is reporting that people are suffering. I urge the media must show the suffering of the people to the citizens.”

Murad Ali Shah said that instead of showing the problems, show the sufferings of the homeless people should be shown so that people realize the minister himself is going, and people are telling their problems.

“ Media personnel must criticize, but it is not a right thing to go to one place and say that no one has reached here. The suffering of people at this time is justified,” he added.
