Mahira Khan responds to tweet of her attending awards after Pakistan floods

Mahira Khan
  • Mahira Khan criticized for attending an awards ceremony in Toronto.
  • A fan said she should have donated the outfits she wore to the event to flood victims.
  • Mahira responded on Twitter, saying it was “never ok” for artists to do anything while performing charity.

Mahira Khan come under fire for traveling to an awards ceremony as Pakistan was devastated by heavy flooding. A few Pakistani actors had made it clear that a portion of the money from the recent Hum Awards in Toronto were being donated. One of the celebrities that received criticism for attending the awards ceremony given the flood situation in Pakistan was Mahira Khan. The actor has now reacted to the “unkind criticism.”

Mahira responded on Twitter on Friday to a fan who had mockingly stated that if the star donated the outfits she wore to the event to the Pakistani flood victims, everything would be OK. Mahira responded that it was “never ok” for artists to do anything while appearing on the red carpet in a black gown inspired by a sari. The actor continued by saying that she would photograph herself helping the flood victims, but she warned that people would criticize her for “showing off performing charity.”

Mahira tweeted, “Its never ok for us – the artists of your country! I have and will continue to do my part. If it makes you happy, I can take some pictures while at it. Oh but then it’ll be – showing off doing charity. The unkind commentary never ends. You do you. I will do me.”

In response to Mahira’s tweet, some people defended celebrities for attending the awards, claiming they were merely “doing their jobs,” but others emphasised how the event might have been utilised to support and publicise rescue efforts as well as raise more money for Pakistan flood victims.

One tweet read, “I wish Hum TV had organised a show or a concert in Pakistan to raise funds awareness and solidarity for the flood victims instead of the annual awards show. Imagine all of Pakistanis artists collectively raising their voices for climate change and advocating for those impacted.”

Mahira upcoming picture, The Legend of Maula Jatt will debut in Pakistan on October 13. Along with others, it features Hamza Ali Abbasi, Fawad Khan, and Humaima Mallick. Neelofar alongside Fawad is another project Mahira has in the works.

  • She posted images of several celebs attending an awards ceremony in Canada.
  • Angelina Jolie visiting flood-stricken areas of Pakistan on Instagram.

With the notable exception of Hadiqa Kiani, senior politician Sharmila Faruqi recently criticized local celebrities for not contributing more to flood aid.

She posted images of several celebs attending the upcoming awards in Canada alongside images of Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie travelling to Pakistan on Instagram.

She stated while posting images from Jolie’s visit to Pakistan, where she met several flood victims. Jolie served as a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR for 11 years prior to being appointed as the UNHCR’s special envoy.

Sharmila wrote, “Here is @angelinajolie visiting our worst flood affected district Dadu, spreading love & hope, appealing to the international community to come for our help. In sharp contrast to this , our Pakistani shining stars are all in Toronto for @humtvpakistanofficial awards, making merry and ready for some scintillating performances.”

“Not a single one of them even bothered to visit any flood affected area or show any solidarity in cash or kind except for @hadiqakianiofficial , Though I truly believe in cultural activities, award shows, performances etc, promoting our talent & our artists and actors are second to none,” she added.

“But It would have been a great support if all of them had reached out to their fellow countrymen who have lost their homes, lives & livelihood to the devastating floods. There is a time for everything, to celebrate , to mourn… we have a humanitarian crisis in our country, this is the time to stand by them, with them, to hold, support and love them. Each one of us has a responsibility towards our nation and it’s people who have given us so much. It’s payback time.”

Over 500 children lost their lives in the unprecedented floods and rains while around 16 million have been affected, according to official data.

“Let these children not be an arithmetic but a clarion call for swift action to rebuild their lives and future,” the prime minister posted on Twitter.

PM Sharif stressed that the global conversation on Pakistan’s flood devastation needed to be focused on the plight of children.

He mentioned that disaster had adversely affected millions of children with over 500 dead.

“Super floods” in Pakistan have left 3.4 million children in need of “immediate, lifesaving support,” according to UNICEF.

The floods – caused by record monsoon rains and dubbed by one minister as “the worst humanitarian disaster in a decade” – have impacted 16 million children in total, UNICEF’s Pakistan Representative Abdullah Fadil said following his visit this week to the country’s southern Sindh Province.

PM asks SCO to make Pakistan-specific climate action plans amid flood disaster

Pakistan-specific climate action plans

SAMARKAND: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called upon the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to come up with Pakistan-specific programs on climate change as the country faced  devastating impact of the global natural phenomenon.

“This climatic injustice has befallen us despite the fact that our carbon emission is less than one percent,” the prime minister said in his address at the Heads of State meeting of the eight-member SCO, held here in the historic city of Samarkand.

The prime minister’s call to the SCO members came in the wake of the recent flash floods in Pakistan that wreaked havoc with the livelihood and infrastructure across the country.

He mentioned that Pakistan was braving the disaster of floods, where hill torrents and massive rains killed 1,400 people including 400 children while millions of houses were damaged partially or completely.

“I earnestly appeal to all of you that let the SCO stand up and take steps against this devastation through sustainable programs,” he said.

PM Sharif said the country never faced such level of climate-induced catastrophe in its history that inflicted disaster upon human lives, infrastructure, livestock, and crops.

He stressed the dire need for assistance from the international community to help Pakistan overcome the problems in the wake of floods, including relief, rehabilitation, and control of water-borne diseases.

“In view of the massive disaster, I would be very honest to urge this forum to extend assistance to Pakistan and chalk out plans regarding climate change for our future generations,” he said.

PM Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm and unwavering commitment to achieving the goals of the SCO.

He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to join the SCO states in the implementation of robust connectivity plans among the neighboring regional countries.

“It will be a win-win outcome for all the member states. This is the time to act, and act now,” he stressed.

The prime minister said Pakistan was firm in collective dedication to fight the menace of extremism, separatism and terrorism.

In the fight against terrorism, he said, thousands of Pakistani civilians and armed forces laid down their lives for the security of their homeland.

As the neighboring country of Afghanistan, he said, Pakistan valued peace, progress and shared development of the country important for the region.

“We have to work together to support all good initiatives in Afghanistan for the good of the people of Afghanistan in areas, particularly education, health, and human rights,” he said.

Sharif said it would be a “big mistake if we ignored Afghanistan.”

He emphasized that strengthening Afghanistan is vital in view of the stability of the region besides achieving the goals of the SCO.

He urged the SCO community to work towards unfreezing the assets of Afghanistan and ensuring respect for human rights especially for women and minorities.
