Exercise Aman held to counter modern-day threats: CM Sindh

Exercise Aman
  • This he said while speaking to the foreign delegates.
  • He modern-day threats to peace are extremist ideology.
  • CM even provided a platform to navies to counter threats.

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that the modern-day threats to peace are extremist ideology-based terrorism, illegal activities by transnational criminal syndicates, maritime piracy, and poverty.

“Natural calamities as a result of climate change, environmental degradation, and the traditional threat of inter-state rivalries based on nationalistic agendas devoid of moral principles and justice happen to be great challenges,” he said while speaking to the heads of foreign delegates/participants of Exercise Aman 2023 who called on him at the CM House on Sunday.

CM Murad said that ‘Aman’ meant ‘Peace’ in the Urdu language and peaceful co-existence was the centerpiece of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

“Our religion Islam also commands all Muslims to establish peace in the world for the peaceful existence of mankind and its living environment; in fact, the word `Islam’ also means peace in the Arabic language which has been chosen by Almighty Allah Himself for this religion which was sent through our Holy Prophet (PBUH),” he said.

He added that peace could be achieved by countering the prevailing threats, therefore countering threats to mankind and the environment where we lived was a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy as ordained upon us by our religion.

The chief minister said that in this age threats to peace have not increased manifold but have changed their nature and character.  “Modern-day threats to peace are extremist ideology-based terrorism, illegal activities by transnational criminal syndicates, maritime piracy, and poverty,” he said.

CM Sindh added that natural calamities as a result of climate change, environmental degradation, and the traditional threat of interstate rivalries based on nationalistic agendas devoid of moral principles and justice were also a form of threats and challenges.

He said that due to the changing nature of threats in modern times, it was not possible for any single nation to single handedly counter such threats, therefore, this required the collaboration of all countries, especially in the international maritime areas.

He added that Exercise Aman provided a platform where navies from a large number of countries got together to show their resolve and commitment to collectively counter threats that were threatening the well-being of the human race and its living environment.

He said that Exercise AMAN was an initiative of the Government of Pakistan led by the Pakistan Navy to enhance collaboration of all navies of the world to counter the modern-day threats in the maritime arena.

  • CM Sindh said MQM votes went to JI in LG polls.
  • He said PPP will serve Karachites as mayor.

KARACHI:  Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged the single largest party in the local bodies’ elections, therefore it has the right to have its mayor.

This he said while talking to the media just after presiding over the Convocation of NAPA at Hindu Gymkhana on Tuesday. To a question, the CM said that had there been some compulsions that’s why the Sindh government wanted to delay the election, otherwise PPP would have taken many more seats than it has taken. “We had requested MQM to avoid boycotting the election, but their party decided to do so, as a result their votes went in their (JI) share, otherwise they were not in a position even to take such a number of seats.

Mr. Shah said that in the history of the city, the PPP appointed its Administrator (Murtaza Wahab) for the first time and what he had delivered is not secret to any Karachiites. “Our party has the history of serving this city and its people and Inshallah we [PPP] would be serving them as chief ministers and mayor,” he said.

Murad Ali Shah said that he has convened a post-Geneva Conference on January 8 in which the donor agencies would be given projects for the financial support they had pledged at Geneva.

Replying to another question, he said that around 20,000 school buildings have been damaged by the heavy rains and flood.

To a question about Safe City, the CM said only installation of cameras were not enough, but we have to strengthen our police for which I have equipped them with latest equipment and gadgets apart from enhancing their salaries and other benefits.

Earlier, speaking at the Convocation Ceremony of NAPA the CM lauded the efforts of Zia Mohiuddin and his team for successfully running the Performing Art institution under the name of NAPA. “Sindh is the land of Sufis who believed in co-existence, plural society and interfaith harmony,” he added.
