Shariat Court directs MoHR to setup protection center for transgenders

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Shariat Court (FSC) directed the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) to take immediate steps to establish a protection center for elderly and underage transgenders.

The Federal Shariat Court in Islamabad heard the applications related to declaring the Transgender Act 2018 illegal.

A two-member bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Shariat Court Syed Muhammad Anwar directed the Ministry of Human Rights to take immediate steps to build an elderly and underage transgender protection center.

The Chief Justice Shariat Court ordered that the Secretary Human Rights should meet the convener of the committee constituted today Zamrad Khan and the SOPs of the protection centers should be made immediately.

The court said that the Ministry of Human Rights should submit a report based on the building of the Protection Center and the SOPs at the next hearing. Zamard Khan is successfully running his protection center.

Acting Chief Justice of Shariat Court Syed Muhammad Anwar said that “If the government cannot do anything for transgenders, let them know. Everyone wants to do something for transgenders, not just the ministry. The report submitted by the Ministry of Human Rights is not in accordance with the court order.”

Secretary Human Rights told the court that the Ministry of Human Rights has established a committee under the chairmanship of Zamrad Khan for Transgender Protection Centers on the court order.

Zumard Khan said that no building has been provided by the Ministry of Human Rights so far for protection centers. The MoHR should provide the building while rest of the facilities will be arranged.

KARACHI: Chairing the provincial cabinet meeting at CM House, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah made important decisions, including approval of reserved seats for transgenders in the local council and purchase of 40 more buses under Peoples Bus Service Karachi.

The provincial cabinet believing in the policy of equal rights for every segment of society has approved reserved seats for transgenders in the local councils.

The provincial cabinet discussed the allocation of reserved seats for the local council for six categories. They include women, and youth members (at least one seat), labor or farmer one seat, non-Muslim members one seat, persons with disabilities one seat, and transgender persons one seat.

The provincial cabinet on the request of Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon approved an amount of Rs1.7 billion for the purchase of 43 more 12-meter hybrid buses for the already operational Peoples Bus Service in the city.

Advisor to CM on Agriculture Manzoor Wassan told the cabinet that he has held a number of meetings with all the stakeholders, including growers and millers to develop a consensus for the fixation of new sugarcane prices. The stakeholders had their own point of view.

He said that the Punjab government has fixed Rs300 per 40 kg sugarcane price, therefore he suggested the cabinet to fix Rs302 per 40 kg for the crushing season 2022-23 starting from November 29, 2022.

The cabinet approved the fixation of the minimum price of sugarcane at Rs302 per 40 kg and also fixed the quality premium rate at Rs0.50 (50 paisa) per 40 kg as approved by the federal government in 1989—99.

The provincial cabinet after thorough consideration granted education emission to nine convicted prisoners.

The health department presented an agenda item with the request to hand over the administrative control of Reduction of Stunning and Malnutrition to Peoples’ Primary health Initiative (PPHI), Sindh.
