Germany among nations ‘doing the most’ for Ukraine says Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz
  • Germany is one of the countries providing the most military aid to war-torn Ukraine.
  • The long delays in German weapon deliveries, compared to the quick deliveries of US arms.
  •  He also expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin had the means to continue his offensive in Ukraine for a long time.

Germany is one of the countries providing the most military aid to war-torn Ukraine, according to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who defended his country’s delays in delivering weapons to Kyiv.

The long delays in German weapon deliveries, compared to the quick deliveries of US arms, are due to the need to train Ukrainian soldiers in Germany, Scholz explained on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

“We will always see that Germany is one of the countries that is doing the most, because what we are sending now is the most sophisticated technology you can use,” Scholz said in the interview conducted Thursday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid.

Since Russia invaded its eastern European neighbor on February 24, Berlin has been accused of hesitating — even being reluctant — to send weapons to Ukraine, out of concern for its relations with Moscow.

Certain US weapons were delivered less than 48 hours after President Joe Biden signed off on the transfer, CBS journalist Margaret Brennan noted during her exchange with Scholz.

But Olaf Scholz said comparing that timeframe to Germany’s weeks or months of delay is unreasonable.

“You should understand that there is a difference of a country like the United States, which spends that much for defense, which is a very big investment, and you have a lot of weapons and stocks,” said Scholz.

He explained that the rocket launchers sent by other countries were already in stock, but were not necessarily the most modern, whereas Germany will send “the most modern howitzer… on the world market.”

He also expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin had the means to continue his offensive in Ukraine.

“He is really doing this brutal war, and he prepared for it,” said Scholz, noting he thinks Putin decided to invade a year or more before actually doing so.

“So he will be able to continue with the war really a long time.”

Germany signs deal to return Benin bronzes to Nigeria

Benin bronzes
  • Germany has around 1,100 of the 16th- to 18th-century artefacts, split between some 20 museums.
  • Thousands of Benin bronzes are scattered around European museums after being looted by the British.
  • Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo state, where it hopes to house them.

Germany signed an agreement on Friday,  to begin sending hundreds of Benin bronzes back to what is now Nigeria, marking the most significant effort by a European country to return the looted artworks.

After Germany announced last year that it would begin returning the bronzes, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth signed the agreement with their Nigerian counterparts in Berlin.

The first two artworks — the head of a king and a plaque depicting three warriors — were on Friday handed over to representatives from Nigeria.

“Today we have reason to celebrate, because we have reached a historic agreement — the Benin bronzes are returning home,” Baerbock said.

“These pieces are not only magnificent artefacts — they are some of Africa’s greatest treasures. But they are also telling a story of colonial violence,” she said.

Thousands of Benin bronzes, metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin are now scattered around European museums after being looted by the British at the end of the 19th century.

Canada to attend G20 summit even if Putin goes: Trudeau

G20 summit
  • Indonesia currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20. Jakarta has come under pressure to exclude Russian President.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said they will attend G20 summit in Bali in November.
  • The G7 also includes Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday they will attend G20 summit in Bali in November, Even if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends.

Indonesia currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20, and despite announcing in April that Russia’s president had been invited, Jakarta has come under Western pressure to exclude him from the meeting.

Asked at a news conference the end of a NATO summit in Madrid if Ottawa would take part in the gathering if Putin is also present, Trudeau said: “We expect that Canada and all members of the G7 will be at the G20.”

“It is too important a conversation on the global economy. It is too important that we be there to counteract the voice and the lies that Russia will perhaps be putting forward. There are a number of months still to go before that and anything can happen,” he added.

The G7 also includes the Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

Indonesia, like most major emerging economies, has tried to maintain a neutral position and called for a peaceful resolution to Russia’s months-long offensive in Ukraine.
