Volkswagen creates a car-like office chair: Watch

Volkswagen

In recent years, technological developments have made the impossible a reality. From AI-enabled phones to electric autos, technological advancements occur almost every day around the world. An office chair that can be driven at a top speed of 19 kilometres per hour (kmph) has piqued the interest of many on the internet.

The chair was created by a team from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Norway and comes equipped with a motor and two large wheels. The contraption, dubbed “The Chair,” has a top speed of 19 kmph and a range of 11 kilometres.

It features four aluminium wheels and is powered by an electric motor. It also includes a seatbelt and LED headlights. The LEDs on the chair are bright enough to illuminate a corridor. There is also a horn that can be used to notify coworkers that the chair is moving.

Aside from the aforementioned characteristics, the chair also includes a stereo, which can help you amp up the office mood. It even has flashing party lights to establish the proper ambiance for the gathering. The chair incorporates an infotainment screen, 360-degree sensors, and a backup camera to keep the user informed.

The Chair’s battery is changeable, and it can travel up to 11 kilometres on a single charge. However, you will never be able to purchase it because Volkswagen designed it as a one-of-a-kind to promote the brand’s line of vans and commercial vehicles.

The Chair video was recently uploaded to YouTube. People indicated an interest in purchasing the chair for a variety of reasons, including “escaping their bosses.” “I want one!” one user jokingly exclaimed. “I want one! But with rockets and an ejector seat”

Volkswagen ‘confident’ despite global headwinds

Volkswagen
  • VW says its net profit rose by 26 percent to 10.6 billion euros ($10.8 billion) in the first half of the year.
  • Revenues were nearly stable at 132.3 billion euros, but unit sales were down by 14 percent from a year ago.
  • Last week, Volkswagen unexpectedly announced the departure of CEO Ferdinand E. Diess after four years at the helm.

German auto giant Volkswagen said Thursday that it was able to overcome global economic headwinds and supply chain issues to put in a “robust” performance in the first six months of 2022.

A week after Volkswagen announced that it would part ways with its chief executive Herbert Diess, the carmaker said it was “confident” for the second half of the year.

“Despite unprecedented global challenges, Volkswagen has demonstrated remarkable financial robustness,” said chief financial officer Arno Antlitz.

“Despite all the caution in the face of the volatile market environment and geopolitical risks, we are confident that we can further accelerate the transformation of the group,” Antlitz said.

VW said its net profit rose by 26 percent to 10.6 billion euros ($10.8 billion) in the first six months, even if its bottom-line in the second quarter alone was hit by an accounting effect linked to hedging against fluctuations in raw material prices.

Underlying, or operating, profit rose by 16 percent to 13.2 billion euros in the period from January to June.

“This was driven by strong performances from the premium and sport brand group,” VW said.

First-half revenues were nearly stable at 132.3 billion euros, but unit sales were down by 14 percent at four million vehicles, not least because of the worldwide shortage of semiconductors plaguing the industry.

Easing supply constraints

Looking ahead, Volkswagen said it “confirms its outlook for 2022… as supply constraints ease.”

The carmaker expected “the product mix to normalise in the second-half as the semi-conductor situation improves in combination with a strong order book,” it said.

“A noticeable recovery of the monthly sales towards the end of second quarter additionally bodes well for second-half sales,” it said.

Nevertheless, it was “still not possible to conclusively assess the specific effects of the war in Ukraine or effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Volkswagen group’s business, on the global economy and growth in the industry in fiscal year 2022,” VW cautioned.

In Europe, in particular, there were uncertainties regarding energy supply.

Last week, Volkswagen unexpectedly announced the departure of CEO Diess after four years at the helm.

He will be replaced in September by Oliver Blume, the current head of the premium Porsche sports car brand.

There would be “continuity” in the group’s strategic shift towards electric vehicles despite the change of leadership, said Antlitz, who will remain on the board under Blume, in a call with journalists.

Blume will likely be tasked with guiding Porsche through a long-planned stock market entry.

A final decision on the listing should be taken in “late summer”, Antlitz told analysts on a conference call.

Volkswagen CEO Diess to step down in September

Volkswagen CEO
  • Herbert Diess to step down from the board of the German auto giant.
  • He will be replaced by the boss of sports car brand Porsche, Oliver Blume.
  • Volkswagen is in the middle of overhauling its business to focus on electric vehicles.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess will step down from the board of the German auto giant to be replaced by the boss of sports car brand Porsche, the group said Friday.

Diess’s departure from the top of the world’s second-largest automaker was agreed “by mutual consent” and would take effect on September 1, Volkswagen said in a statement.

After four years as CEO, Diess will be replaced by Oliver Blume, the current boss of the Porsche sports cars, part of the Volkswagen family of 12 brands that also includes Skoda and Audi.

The group, which is in the middle of overhauling its business to focus on electric vehicles, decided the move at a meeting of the supervisory board on Friday.

Diess had “played a key role” in the transformation of the group, steered the company through “extremely turbulent waters” and “implemented a fundamentally new strategy”, said supervisory board chairman, Hans Dieter Poetsch.

The outgoing CEO often ruffled feathers with his abrasive style and controversial statements.

In 2019, he was made to apologise for making a play on words with a Nazi slogan at a company meeting.

Diess came under pressure internally after he suggested last October that up to 30,000 jobs could be at risk at Volkswagen in Germany if it could not cut costs in its transition to battery-powered models.

An open admirer of Elon Musk, the CEO of American electric vehicles pioneer Tesla, Diess said last year the storied German carmaker would need a “revolution” to take on its US rival.

“Team spirit, fairness and passion are decisive for success,” the incoming CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement on Friday.
